Dinh Q. Lê: Monuments and Memorials, Singapore Tyler Print Institute, 17 Mar – 12 May 2018
Dinh Q. Le’s “Splendor and Darkness” series of woven photographs is a depiction of the Cambodian history that blends images of Khmer temples with portraits of Khmer Rouge victims killed at Tuol Sleng. Singapore Tyler Print Institute presents these works in the artist’s first major solo exhibition in Singapore, “Monuments and Memorials”. This is the first time that audiences in Asia will get to experience this body of work after its initial conception in 1998. Find out more information at STPI.
Documentary Screenings: Stories That Matter – Borders by Objectifs – Centre for Photography and Film, 20 – 24 Mar
As much as the world has become closer and increasingly more connected, the violence of borders has become even more prevalent. In this series of five documentary screenings, Objectifs presents a wide-ranging exploration on the many borders around the world – be it geographical, social, or psychological – that divide and restrict, and looks at how change can happen. From Brexit, to the European refugee crisis, to the Middle-East, these film screenings make insightful inquiries into the lives of real individuals affected by the impact of various borders. Panel Discussion — Writing about Indonesia with Okky Madasari & Shivaji Das, BooksActually, 22 March, 7pm
Join two writers who have written widely about Indonesia share their thoughts and feelings on the growth of literature and writing in the country, and its changing economic and sociopolitical landscape. The panellists are Okky Madasari, award-winning novelist who is known for her incisive depictions of the contemporary sociopolitical conditions in Indonesia, and Shivaji Das, a Singaporean travel writer who has written about and been published in Indonesia. The conversation is moderated by Windu Lesarti, Indonesian writer of short stories and poetry, who works as a domestic helper in Singapore. Find out more here.
Cinerama Closing Weekend | Lights, Camera, Action!, Singapore Art Museum, 24 – 25 March
The Singapore Art Museum’s latest exhibition Cinerama is coming to a close, and with a bang. Live music performances, quirky workshops and activity booths, and other fun events abound on the museum grounds this coming weekend. Esplanade Presents | Joget, Esplanade Theatre Studio, 22 – 24 March, 8pm
This performance features four young emerging choereographers Norisham Osman, Norhaizad Adam, Badarudin Hassan and Hasyimah Harith showcasing new work. It’s a melting pot of influences and inspirations from traditional Malay dance and the day-to-day concerns of Singaporeans, and it’s conceptualised in collaboration with choreographer Susan Sentler as dramaturg.
