Thought Lines – An exhibition by Berny Tan, at Supernormal, 333 Kreta Ayer Road, 11 – 28 Jan

In her first solo exhibition, Berny Tan presents a new series of twenty abstract embroideries, reflecting on the medium’s obsessive nature through the repetitive motion of stitching. Each study is created by adhering to sets of written rules, based on thought patterns and mechanisms that manifest within the artist’s personal anxieties. More information.

RAID, by Zulkhairi Zulkiflee and Daniel Chong, Tiong Bahru Air Raid Shelter, from 13 Jan

RAID explores the intricacies of site as narrator within the historic Tiong Bahru Air Raid Shelter. It extends the literature of site responsivity through the lens of 8 up and coming artist working across fields of sculpture, installation and conceptual art. Through RAID, each of the artist will present their interpretation of the loaded site – intuitively, architecturally or historically. RAID features works by artist-organizers Daniel Chong, Zulkhairi Zulkiflee and participating artist, Ivan David Ng, Tay Ining, Vanessa Lim, Jacqueline Sim, Pooja Kanade, and Nhawfal Juma’at. ACT4: We, The Singaporeans (WTS) by TRDO LTD., Esplanade Theatre Studio, 12 – 13 Jan

ACT started in 2014 as a platform for local dancers. In 2017, it took a turn by becoming the first installation of the company’s work. Derived from the acronym ‘Action Changes Things’, ACT is now established as TRDOco’s yearly phenomenon for the presentation of company work. In January 2018, the team presents a brand new work – “We The Singaporeans (WTS!)”, exploring the unique dynamics of Singaporean culture – both the things we love, and the things that drive us mad. State of Motion 2018: Sejarah-ku, various location, from 12 Jan

State of Motion 2018: Sejarah-ku explores film as a site of cultural and ideological production in the last decade of pre-independence Singapore. Revisiting and reactivating snippets of our national past, ‘Sejarah-ku’ (Malay for ‘my history’) comprises a selection of seminal Malay-language films produced by the now-defunct Shaw Malay Film Productions Ltd, as well as a diverse line-up of artworks and performances made in response to the films. For the first time, State of Motion travels offshore on a boat ride with a performance conceived by akulah BIMBO SAKTI. The programme also includes free film screenings and talks at the Malay Heritage Centre. More information.

Lancing Girls of a Happy World: Book Launch, Ethos Books, at National Library, 13 Jan 3pm

Join us for an intimate session exploring the rarely-told stories of Lancing Girls of a Happy World in Singapore. The launch offers a candid sharing of Adeline Foo’s research and writing over a 14-month period. It is supported by a talk from Project X, a community based organisation established in 2008, which dispels myths about the sex worker community and addresses the gap in social services for them. How far have things changed since the time when dancing girls first accepted money for providing a service? More information.
