Watch Local 2017: Singapore Telemovies, 7-11 Feb, various timings

This year’s edition of Objectifs’ annual series showcasing Singapore films turns to telemovies. A selection of telemovies from the 90s to 2016, ranging from original scripts to adaptations of short stories and stage plays by local writers, will be screened. Highlights include Time Tomorrow, the first English-language telemovie made by Singapore Broadcasting Corporation (currently known as MediaCorp), Early Morning Awakening, an adaptation of the award-winning play “Off Centre” by Cultural Medallion winner Haresh Sharma, and The Playground by K. Rajagopal, an adaption of the late poet Arthur Yap’s well-loved poem “2 mothers in a hdb playground”. More information.

THERE IS NO PLACE, LIKE HOME… by Lio Cheung, Instinc Art Space, 11 – 12 Feb

Instinc’s artist-in-residence is Hong Kong-based artist Lio Cheung, who draws most of her inspiration from keen observations of nature, culture, and daily interactions with people around her, creating artwork that weaves and incorporates different materials and mediums. Through this residency, she hopes to discover a new meaning of home for herself that spans 2 different generations and 2 different places. Speakeasy #30: The Valentine’s Edition 2017, 10 Feb, Artistry Cafe, 8pm
Speakeasy’s 30th spoken word session features 14 writers and poets including big names such as Cyril Wong and Yong Shu Hoong join young, emerging writers such as Ruth Tang and Daryl Yam to read their favourite love poems about heartbreak, hot nights and hamburgers. If the last three Speakeasy Valentine’s Day editions were anything to go by, you’ll encounter anything from Rimbaud to Rihanna, from Shakespeare to Snoop Dogg. More information.

National Museum of Singapore Cinémathèque Selects: Eating Air and Billy Liar, 11 Feb, 3pm and 5pm

Cinémathèque Selects is a monthly double-bill screening that profiles the boldest film-makers and most inventive productions from Singapore’s past to its present. The series uncovers lesser-known local productions as well as significant films in Singapore’s cinematic landscape. Each film screening is accompanied by conversations with the film-maker. A second film chosen by the film-maker reveals his or her inspiration and influences from diverse corners of the film world.
