Paper Monkey Masterclass started from the urgent need to address the dwindling number of puppeteers and artists who possess puppetry skill sets in Singapore, which greatly places this art form at risk of losing its relevance.

Masterclass seeks to provide foundational training for puppetry to arts practitioners, with a focus on it as a core discipline. It hopes to sustain its relevance by inspiring more practitioners to develop a love and deep passion for puppetry, and to encourage the production of more puppetry works thereafter, and for the future generations to gain access to this art form.

Over the past 17 years, the M1 Singapore Fringe Festival has been a key event in Singapore’s arts and cultural calendar, presenting cutting edge, contemporary work curated around a specific theme chosen for the year. In the framework of the Residency Programme Frankfurt Moves! the foundation KfW Stiftung and the Frankfurt LAB invite you to develop artistic productions in the fields of the performing arts and to exchange ideas with other creative artists. The Artists in Residence will be invited to Frankfurt am Main, a German metropolis in the heart of Europe, for a period of four weeks. Open Call: Lee Kong Chian NUS-Stanford Distinguished Fellowship on Contemporary Southeast Asia

The Lee Kong Chian Fellowship is the core of the Lee Kong Chian NUS-Stanford Initiative on Southeast Asia, a joint effort established in 2007 by the National University of Singapore and Stanford University to raise the visibility, extent, and quality of research scholarship on contemporary Southeast Asia. The infrastructure for research pursued through the fellowship is provided by the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at NUS and the Southeast Asia Program in the Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center (Shorenstein APARC) at Stanford. Although we do not expect the following guidelines for applicants to change, they could be altered depending on conditions related to COVID-19.

Interested individuals with backgrounds or positions in the social sciences or humanities are encouraged to apply. Candidates may be of any nationality or seniority.

The work Cardinal Rule Press publishes hopes to empower children by telling meaningful stories aimed at 4-11 year olds. They publish realistic fiction which they describe as “a genre made up of stories that could happen in our world and society.”

They only consider work where characters are human beings that are living in places that could be real, or are in fact real. Magic does not exist in real fiction.

They consider manuscripts up to 1,000 words in length.

34 Orchard: Now Seeking Submissions

34 Orchard is an online literary magazine that “takes you dark places.” They publish poetry and fiction that’s frightening, unnerving, or sad. They don’t focus on traditional dark genres such as horror; rather, they aim to publish anything that’s shadowy and intense. They especially like dark writing that brings the reader to deeper truths.

Poets may submit up to three dark poems of any style or length. Authors of fiction may submit one dark story, 1,000 to 7,500 words. Manuscripts should use Shunn formatting, and should include a cover letter and third-person bio. Take care to follow the editor’s formatting requests under “How to Submit.” Submissions that do not follow these formatting guidelines will be deleted unread.

2022 will see the ten-year anniversary of the groundbreaking publication of Fish Eats Lion: New Singaporean Speculative Fiction. Editor Jason Erik Lundberg is seeking submissions for Fish Eats Lion Redux, to be published in late 2022 by Epigram Books, of new and innovative original short speculative fiction in English.

The story should be at least fulfil one of the following:

– your protagonist is Singaporean (i.e. born or naturalised in Singapore),

– your protagonist (Singaporean or otherwise) is living in Singapore at the time of your story (i.e. Singapore is the setting), OR

– your story’s themes are inspired by life in Singapore.

Stories are recommended to be between 3,000 and 5,000 words, with a maximum of 7,500 words.

The CKS Khmer Language and Culture Program (KLCP) provides an opportunity for faculty, post-graduate researchers and undergraduates from U.S. universities to participate in an intensive eight-week study abroad program in Phnom Penh, and Siem Reap Cambodia.

The CKS Khmer Language and Culture Program aims to meet that demand and provide the opportunity for those with less Khmer language experience to benefit from study in-country. Like their ASK counterparts, participants in the CKS program will receive four hours of intensive language training during morning sessions. In the afternoon, they will take part, alongside the ASK program participants, in field trips and other cultural activities, including visits to local governmental and non-governmental institutions, where their language skills can be used in real-time situations.
