Call for applicants: Person-centred Arts Practices With Communities: The Artist Training Program by Community Cultural Development (Singapore)
Artist Training Programme: 31 August – 5 October 2019
This short training programme introduces the concepts and framework of the four dimensions (personal, social, cognitive and cultural) that enable person-centred arts practices to take place with communities. It will also guide participants with methods to craft curriculum, write proposals and evaluations using the person-centred dimensions.
Participants for this programme are expected to commit to 5 lecture discussion sessions held weekly between 26th August and 5th October 2019. The programme concludes with an individual discussion with each participant to facilitate a more personal understanding of how the dimensions can be applied to each individual’s practice.

Bhumi Collective: The Mekar Programme Open Call
Bhumi Collective and Artseen (NLB) will launch a pilot performance development programme, which will serve as a space for artists to develop new ideas while also demystifying the process of performance creation for the stage. The public will be given an opportunity to engage with how new ideas for the stage are formed, workshopped and developed through open process-making sessions and a public sharing at the culmination of the programme. Through this programme, Bhumi Collective is also searching for artists and their ideas, whom align with their vision, in hopes of supporting the work in the future, towards a full staging.
The programme is called Mekar (meaning “bloom” in Malay). It will run from October 2019 to March 2020 at various library spaces around Singapore.

Sing Lit Station: Manuscript Assessment Scheme (Extended Deadline)
Manuscript Assessment Scheme (MASS) is an initiative by the National Arts Council, managed by Sing Lit Station. It is a subsidised scheme for deserving literary manuscripts to receive detailed professional feedback from The Literary Consultancy (TLC), a UK-based editorial consultancy service. It will accept manuscripts by writers at any stage of their career, regardless of publication history. It will also accept manuscripts in the hands of publishers seeking additional feedback for their Singaporean writers. Manuscripts in three genres (poetry, fiction, non-fiction) and of various lengths will be considered for submission.

MUTEK.JP: Open Call for AI Music Lab
MUTEK.JP will collaborate with Gamma Festival and EDGEof to lead a multidisciplinary laboratory using artificial intelligence in the creation of sound and music in Tokyo. The AI Music lab will gather musicians, composers, sound artists, musicologists, programmers, researchers, engineers and curators alike to jointly explore the intersection of artificial intelligence and art. The application of AI during the lab uses three musical approaches with relevance to Japanese culture: Soundscape composition, Noise music and Techno music production. Ultimately, the best results will be presented at the upcoming instalment of MUTEK.JP festival on December 11-15, 2019.

Insurgent Tongues: Call for Submissions
In Motherless Tongues, scholar Vicente Rafael writes of the “irreducibly insurgent element in every language that undermines attempts at mastery.” “Mastery” can point to a range of things: fluency in a language, supremacy over a person, colonial suppression of a nation. A new folio of the Transpacific Literary Project will celebrate the disobedient and porous nature of language, and interrogate authoritarian attempts (and failures) to control the complex formations of self, family, school, and nation.
Submissions are accepted in any language of East Asia, Southeast Asia, and South Asia*. All contributors, writers and translators, will be paid.

The placement is a paid professional development opportunity, to get involved with the delivery team for the Unlimited programme supporting work by disabled artists, in the United Kingdom. It will involve the placement holder visiting London for several weeks in March-May period to get to know the Unlimited delivery partner organisations (Shape Arts and Artsadmin), and the Unlimited team. There will be a second trip to London early September 2020, to assist the Unlimited team in the activity around Southbank Centre’s Unlimited Festival.
This opportunity is for individuals that identify as disabled, and who have professional experience of working in the arts sector, whether that be through employment or self-initiated projects. The role is aimed to develop project managing, producing, event managing and arts administrative skills, and will be tailored to work to the strengths and interests of the placement holder. It is for an individual living anywhere in the world outside of the UK, with a high level of spoken and written English, or British Sign Language, that will enable them to fully benefit from the experience.

AfA Fund for The Arts
To further support the ongoing move towards an environment free from stigma and discrimination, Action for AIDS is announcing the launch of the ‘AfA Fund for The Arts’. The Fund intends to award grants of up to S$20,000 per project that have strong focus on ending stigma and discrimination. Selection will be done by a panel appointed by Action for AIDS, Singapore. The AfA Fund for the Arts is the first dedicated fund of its kind to target stigma and discrimination faced by the HIV+ community.
As a pilot exercise, we are looking to fund short films or related media that fulfil the following criteria:
- Demonstrate an understanding of and commitment towards addressing stigma and discrimination faced by PLHIV and/or key affected populations;
- Employ unique, yet accessible, story-telling that will engage a general audience;
- Formatted for potential online distribution, and free of copyrighted material.

The Esplanade: Editor

Main responsibilities:

Kathy Rowland is the Managing Editor of ArtsEquator.com, a registered charity that she co-founded with Jenny Daneels in 2016. The site is dedicated to supporting and promoting arts criticism with a regional perspective in Southeast Asia. Kathy has worked in the arts for over 25 years, working in the areas of critical writing and arts advocacy, with a special interest in media platforms for the arts. She is the Project Lead for ArtsEquator’s Southeast Asian Arts and Culture Censorship Documentation Project, launched in 2021. She has written extensively on censorship of arts and culture in Malaysia. She was a member of the International Programme Advisory Committee of the 8th World Summit on Arts and Culture, 2019.
