Top Picks of Indonesia art events in Jakarta and Solo from 13 – 19 August 2018.
Indonesia is celebrating its national day this week. To celebrate the 73rd year of independence, the State Secretariat presents Indonesia Semangat Dunia, an exhibition of the presidential art collections that have been collected since the early years of President Soekarno, Indonesia’s first president. Some of the paintings exhibited include works by Raden Saleh, Basoeki Abdullah, Nyoman Gunarsi, Affandi, S. Sudjojono and many more. Still in the same spirit of Indonesia’s national day, our second pick for this week is Monolog Sutan Sjahrir that will be performed as part of the Salihara International Performing Arts Festival on 18 and 19th of August. This monologue is set in 1962 as Sutan Sjahrir, Indonesia’s revolutionary independence leader, was jailed from accusation of treason. The monologue reflects on his relationships with Soekarno and Hatta. Monolog Sutan Sjahrir is written by Ahda Imran, performed by Rendra Pamungkas, and directed by Rukman Rosadi. The Jakarta Philharmonic returns with its 15th edition concert titled ruang & waktu. In this concert they’ll be presenting Gounod’s Petite Symphony for 9 Wind Instruments, Martinu’s Double Concerto for Two Swing Orchestras, Piano, and Timpani, Françaix’s L’Horloge de Flore, as well as Indonesian composer Misael Tambuwun’s Intuisi: sequel for orchestra and electronic recorder. This programme is created as a reflection of the relativity of space and time that relates to perception and human consciousness. The concert will take place on Saturday, 18th August 2018 at 7:30 pm at Teater Jakarta in Taman Ismail Marzuki. If you enjoy Gamelan music, you might be interested in attending the International Gamelan Festival in Solo that is taking place until 16 August 2018. The Festival is carrying a theme of homecoming as it calls back various gamelan groups that are spread internationally to come back to the place where Gamelan originates. There are performances, conference, exhibition, film screening, and literature discussion held at various locations in Solo as part of the festival.
