Weekly Picks: Indonesia (5 – 11 March 2018)

Top Picks of Indonesia art events in Bali, Bandung and Jakarta from 5 – 11 March 2018

We start our picks this week in Bali. Photographer Syafiudin Vifick invites you to Perjamuan Terakhir, or The Last Supper. Through this solo photo exhibition, Syafiudin would like to engage visitors to reflect whether Bali is truly a paradise, as what many people have expressed. Perjamuan Terakhir is curated by Savitri S. and runs at Uma Seminyak until 11 March 2018. For more information, go to Uma Seminyak’s instagram here.

If you’re in Jakarta, treat yourself on Thursday night to a free Baroque music concert presented by Le Baroque Nomade. In the last 20 years, this ensemble has explored historical and cultural connections between Baroque music and traditional music from other regions including China, India, Ethiopia and Turkey. Le Baroque Nomade presents their repertoire on Thursday, 8 March 2018 at Sheraton Gandaria City. They will also present the same repertoire at Institut Francaise Bandung on the 10th of March 2018. Click here for more information on the Jakarta concert, and here for the Bandung concert.

Since March is Indonesia’s national film month, film lovers get a treat of many great films to pick from this month. So if you love film, head to Kineforum or Kinosaurus from 9 March to catch some films under the 9th edition of Sejarah adalah Sekarang. Films often become documentaries of life of certain eras or periods. This series presents Indonesian films from different periods and invites the audience to reflect on the past and present and what they see of the future. For the weekend, if you are a practitioner in the creative arts and is looking to deepen your creative visual practice, join Komunitas Salihara’s Dimensional Morphology, a visual laboratory for collective experimentation of visual elements through various researches, analytics, and problem solving methodologies. Dimensional Morphology will be broken down into various teaching modules. Each module will be facilitated by Melissa Sunjaya, the award-winning artist and creator of TULISAN, a ready-wear label that features visual illustrations. This visual laboratory will be held every Saturday starting on 10 March to 24 April 2018 at Komunitas Salihara. For more information, click here.

Also for the visual artists, this is the last week to submit your work to be selected for one of Yogyakarta’s annual art festival, ARTJOG. Returning for its 11th year, ARTJOG aims to continue to provide new discourses for Indonesia contemporary art. This year’s ARTJOG carries the theme of Enlightment. With this theme, the festival invites artists to explore the idea of enlightenment in the everyday occurrences and how it connects various parts of lives. To get the Open Call application and rules, visit artjog.co.id.

We hope you find something interesting in our weekly picks. Have a great week and don’t forget to catch some arts!
