Top Picks of Indonesia art events in Jakarta and Bandung from 11-17 March 2019
The Jakarta Arts Council and Bekraf is back with its Teater Arsip program. Titled Di Balik Setiap Pintu (Behind Every Door), this year’s program focuses on Wayang Beber and sensory ethnography and uses this as a theme for curations and research processes. Between the 11th and the 17th March 2019, there will be film screenings, exhibitions, performances, workshops, and discussions around wayang beber, sensory ethnography, and how to combine scientific research and data with the spectrum of voice, movement, and space using the body as a medium. Rap music is identified with the the style of music originated in Africa. This Thursday, Rudy Octave takes Rap to its root words of Rhythm and Poetry to show that Indonesia has its own flavors of Rap. Rap Nusantara presents a series of musicians that represent the varieties of rhythms and poetries in the country. Some of the performers include PM Toh (a storyteller from Aceh), Dede Ndate (a songstress from Central Celebes), and other performers from NTT, Borneo, and Papua. This past week, UNKNOWN ASIA, the International Art Fair based in Osaka collected submission from Indonesian visual artists in various categories such as art, photography, design, installation, film, and many others. On Saturday, 16 March 2019, reviewers Yoshihiro Taniguchi and Hiroaki Shono will present the selected works at Dia.Lo.Gue artspace in Jakarta at 3:30 pm. The Jatiwangi Art Factory is a small art centre in Jatiwangi, a town northwest of Bandung. On Thursday, the collective is holding a public lecture titled Sravanaloka – Desa Industri sebagai Ruang Kreatif (Industrial Village as a Creative Space). The lecture will share how Jatiwangi Art Factory successfully transformed an industrial village that used to be filled with street crimes, into an active creative hub with a supportive local community.
