An initiative to understand visual culture in relation to the politics of space, this monthly group tackles Chapter 2 of Arturo Escobar’s ‘Encountering Development: The Making and Unmaking of the Third World’. The chapter is titled ‘The Problematization of Poverty: The Tale of Three Worlds and Development.’
Questions the group tackles this month includes the purpose of development, how poverty is defined, and the ways development intertwines with race, culture, gender, nation, and class in Malaysia. Read chapter 2 of this document before joining the reading group.

10,000 Mosquito Hearts: A Solo Exhibition by Foo May Lyn, at OUR ArtProjects, 26 Jan – 17 Feb
Artist Foo May Lyn’s first solo show in Kuala Lumpur is a visual exhibition that retells the popular legend of Puteri Gunung Ledang as a contemporary epic. It features over 140 intricate drawings, as well as textiles and soft sculptures. The Puteri is said to have demanded outrageous dowries from the Sultan who wanted her hand in marriage. Did she? Who were the ordinary labourers who had to meet these demands for the Sultan? The exhibition is curated by fellow artist Sharon Chin.

Rimbun Dahan Residency Exhibition 2019, at Rimbun Dahan, 20 Jan – 3 Feb
A two-woman show by Rimbun Dahan resident artists — You Belong to Night by Wong Xiang Yi and Rojak Aesthetics by Chuah Shu Ruei. There will be a garden tour on 3 Feb (Sunday), 9am, hosted by Angela Hijjas. The gallery is open to public on weekends (10am–6pm), and on weekdays by appointment only with Xeem Noor at arts@rimbundahan.org.
