Nadir is a band with a diverse lineup, and their music is a big, fun sound that loosely blends rock, jazz and world music with a wide range of local influences. They are best known for their take on Malaysian nursery rhyme Ikan Kekek. Admission fee RM53 (RM43 for students with valid ID).

Hello 2019!, at Crackhouse Comedy Club KL, 17 Jan, 9pm
AIIA improv group returns with their late night comedy improv nights. It’s difficult to predict how an improv night goes, but AIIA is the most experienced group performing in KL now, with a good track record. On some nights the energy is so high and hilarious I’ve hurt myself laughing. Tickets are RM30 online, and RM40 at the door.

An Evening with Piyadasa: Screening and Discussion, at Malaysia Design Archive, 17 Jan, 8–10:30pm
A screening of Interview with Piyadasa, where artist, curator and art critic Redza Piyadasa shares his views on art in this interview by writer Malene Grondahl and anthropologist Pia Poulsen. Amir Zainorin, who edited the film, leads the discussion post-screening.

KAKAK下人, at NOW Theatre, 18–19 Jan, 8pm
Inspired by Genet’s The Maids, KAKAK uses the story of two maids intending to murder their employer as a metaphor for a Malaysian society oppressed under a racist government. KAKAK is an award-winning play first performed in klpac, followed by Sabah and Taipei. It is now being restaged to raise funds as the production is travelling to International Theatre Festival of Kerala (India).

BoboKL presents: Crazy Funny Asians, at Bobo KL, 18–19 Jan, 9:30pm
A standup comedy night featuring the bawdy humour of Shamaine Othman, Joanne Kam and Kuah Jenhan’s alter ego Rambo Tan. Admission is RM60++, and reservations are recommended as seats are limited.

Buka Panggung, at Bentley Music, 19 Jan
Organised by The Wknd, this one-day music festival offers a marketplace, exhibitions, workshops and (of course) music showcase headlined by Indonesian folk group Silampukau. Other acts include NJWA, Deepset and The Impatient Sisters, with a guest appearance by Milo Dinosaur.

Ripples of The Spring, at The Play Haus, 19 Jan, 11am 3pm 8pm
This programme greets the new year with a celebration of traditional Chinese performances in Play Haus. On the 19th, there will be a Teochew iron-rod puppetry performance of a story from Journey to the West: Gossamer Cave, featuring puppeteer Ling Goh.

Flower Market, at REXKL, 18 –20 Jan
Once known as REX Cinema in Chinatown, the space has been refurbished into a community space. The launch celebrations occur over three weekends, with pop-up stores, refreshments, farmers’ market, live acts, workshops and more. For this weekend, a ‘flower market’ kicks off what will perhaps one day be a regular space for local retail efforts.
