Weekly Picks: Malaysia (10–16 Dec 2018)

Paranormal, at RAW Art Space, 11 Dec, 8:30pm

Award-winning musician Ng Chor Guan performs with Paranormal String Quartet from Germany. The night will showcase repertoire pieces by Paranormal String Quartet, which explores unique soundscapes of classic, jazz and contemporary; and Toccata Studio’s 20:20:Timescaper, a conceptual work of a journeying individual.  Admission by minimum donation of RM60 (includes 2020:Timescaper album)

The Frankie Sixes, at No Black Tie, 12 Dec, 9pm

A swing jazz band borne out of singer-songwriter Reza Salleh’s love for Lindy Hop dancing. The band’s repertoire has been steadily increasing, and performed by esteemed musicians. No Black Tie is always a lovely bar to visit. Put on your dancing shoes as a dance floor may break out. Admission is RM53.

IF WALLS COULD TALK: Goodbye (for now), at The Gaslight Cafe KL, 13 Dec, 8pm

2018 closes with spoken word open mic event Walls going on indefinite hiatus, and Gaslight Cafe closing its doors. In its three years, hundreds of poets and musicians have taken the stage to share their words and music, and provided a warm community for many. For its finale, some of their favourite poets and musicians will be performing. Cover charge of RM20 (inclusive of one drink).

The Dead Bird, at klpac, 14 & 15 Dec, 8:30pm

A full-length dance performance that combines butoh and contemporary choreography, The Dead Bird adapts the structure of the four birds from ‘The Universal Tree and the Four Birds’ written by Sufi poet Ibn Arabi (1165–1240) to explore the meaning of being human. Tickets begin at RM58 (RM30 concessions). Age limit 12 and above.

JAMU 2018, at Aswara, 14–15 Dec, 8:30pm

Aswara dance faculty’s annual year-end dance production features 8 new works by dance lecturers. This year, the dances include traditional elements following the theme of ‘Tradition in Contemporary Dance’. It is a faculty with a diversity of expertise, so expect a good mix of choreography. Tickets are RM20 (RM10 for students). Purchase your tickets early as the students can take up a huge chunk of the seats.

FOLKLORE: Puisi dan Lagu Vol 1, at RAW Art Space,

An event that combines artists from Indonesia and Malaysia. The acts are Rull Darwis feat PB Adi, Meor, Amir Jahari, Suehaila, Rohasremi and Nina Hisham. My personal favourites  to watch out for in the line up are Meor and Amir Jahari. Admission is RM35. Event will be held in Malay.

BMW Shorties Film Festival, at Tiffin Food Court, 15 Dec, 2–11pm

The BMW Shorties return this year with a fresh new list of shortlisted films for 2018 — this competition always surfaces some interesting (read: slick) short films and can function as a survey of the Malaysian short film scene.

When I Say Spoken, You Say Word (KL Launch), at Lit Books, 16 Dec, 5pm

If Walls Could Talk is KL’s longest running spoken word event, and they’ll be going on indefinite hiatus. Before they do, they have collected the funds necessary to publish an anthology of poems. Come say a temporary farewell to this beloved spoken word community, and take a lil piece of it home with you. Admission is RM20 (RM55 with a copy of the book). Wicked Chronicles, at The Yellow Brick Road cafe, 16 Dec, 8pm

The baroque music group Wicked Music People present a music programme of Vivaldi, Lully, Corrette, Gallo, Boismortier and more. For the first time, there’ll also be a baroque cello. Introductions will be presented for the music and composers, and it’s a fun way to get to know music from the period. SevenCollar T-Shirt Murder Launch, at The Bee, 16 Dec, 9pm

SevenCollar doesn’t need introduction in Malaysia’s band scene — this well-regarded rock band has been performing for over a decade, gathering accolades along the way. Their latest album, Murder, will be launched at this show, with opening performance by singer-songwriter Lunadira. Pre-sale tickets are RM70 (inclusive of Murder CD, signed poster and sticker), and RM80 at the door.

The Edge, at Lot’ng, 8–23 Dec

This is a beautiful locally produced musical that explores the relationships and past of a man standing on the edge. Absolutely worth the watch, this award-winning show is now in its tenth anniversary and should not be missed. Seats are limited in this venue, so get your seats booked early. Tickets are RM58 (mid-week special tickets for 12 & 19 Dec: RM48).
