Top Picks of Indonesia art events in Bali, Yogyakarta, and Jakarta from 15-21 October 2018
The first edition of Art Bali is here from the 9th of October to the 9th of November. Held as a parallel event to the 2018 IMF-WBG Annual Meeting, Art Bali showcases the best artworks from balinese artists, and artists from other regions in Indonesia, and the rest of the world. Titled Beyond the Myths, this exhibition highlights changes in contemporary visual art practices that are related to socio-economy and political changes in Indonesia and globally. The works in the exhibition provide suggestions for a new worldview, turning symbols into a new mythology, through which the organiser hopes to expand the way we think critically while creating new human values. Beyond the Myths is held at ABBC Building in Nusa Dua, Bali. This week, there will be a Curatorial Tour on Friday, 19th October 2018 at 4 PM. In Yogyakarta, Bedog Arts Festival returns for its 9th edition on the 18th and the 19th of October 2018 with a theme of “the reality of diversity as a harmony.” This year, the festival is back with various theatre, dance, and music performances from local and international artists, and all to be held in a beautiful outdoor space by the river Bedog. If you have children, take your children to a pantomime performance by Thai group Puppetomime (Babymime). This performance combines the art of pantomime and puppetry to bring tales of fantasy from this world and others. In addition to the performance, the group will hold a free workshop on body movement. Workshop by Babymime starts at 2 PM on Tuesday, 16th October 2018. The performance starts at 7:30 PM on the same day. Both workshop and performance will be held at Bentara Budaya Jakarta. The Jakarta Arts Council is in the 4th year of its project on arts by female artists. Earlier this year, the council chose 6 female artists to observe the phenomenon of the hijab. These artists did their observations and performed their research on the personal, social, as well as cultural context of the hijab. Dian Suci Rahmawati, Dyantini Adeline, Ferial Afiff, Lala Bohang, Ipeh Nur, and Ratu R. Saraswati started their observations in September 2018 which led to the artworks that will be presented in the exhibition Yang Tersingkap from the 17th to the 30th of October 2018 at Galeri Cipta II at Taman Ismail Marzuki in Jakarta.
