Pekan Seni Media, Now – 14 July 2017, Bandar Seni Raja Ali Haji, Pekanbaru

The Ministry of Education and Culture, together with Forum Lenteng presents Pekan Seni Media, a Media Art Festival in Pekanbaru, Riau. The festival invites media art lovers to visit the exhibition, attend the symposium, workshop, educational tour, and the social events. The festival presents works from 30 media artists from all over Indonesia. Don’t miss the multi-media performances that will take place during the festival that includes a performance by Julian Abraham, who had previously performed the same work at CCA Singapore. Sharing Session Transmediale and CTM Festival, 7 – 9:30 PM, 10 July 2017, Taman Budaya Pekanbaru

 In February 2017, Goethe Institut Indonesia brought 6 emerging artists and media art theorists from Jakarta, Bandung, Surabaya, and Yogyakarta to attend transmediale, a Berlin-based festival that explores the connection between art, culture and technology, and CTM, a festival of digital and experimental music. As a part of Pekan Seni Media, all 6 participants will share the knowledge they gained and the experienced they had visiting these festivals. FOG, 11 – 12 July 2017, 7:30 PM, Bentara Budaya Jakarta

Kelompok Teater Kami presents FOG, a play inspired by the story of one of Indonesia’s football legend, Ronny Patinasarany. Kelompok Teater Kami is a theater group in Jakarta that has been around for over 25 years. The group creates works that are lifted from stories from different societies. S[ch/j]umanniana, 12 July 2017, 7:30 PM, Gedung Kesenian Jakarta.

The fifth edition of Jakarta City Philharmonic presents S[ch/j]umanniana. The title is a play of combining Schumann and Sjuman, the two composers whose work they are presenting. The human body is always a fascinating subject that artists love to explore. In I too am untranslatable, 4 different artists from Jakarta, Bandung, and Jogjakarta explores the different layers of the body and different representations of human bodies through photography, printmaking, painting, and performance art. Attend the opening reception on 14 July at 7 to 11 PM. The exhibition runs from 15 July to 13 August 2017. Perhaps, we’ll shift our perception of the bodies. Workshop Wayang Bersama Made Sukadana & Kawamura Kohey, 14 July 2017, 6 PM, Bentara Budaya Bali

In this edition of Bentara Budaya Creative Class, the center invites everyone who loves Wayang and interested to learn more about it to this month’s class. A Wayang performance comes in various shapes and stories and has become the cultural expression of various countries in this region. In Indonesia, almost every region has its own unique take on wayang, which beautifully mirrors the dynamism of the local society. Balinese artist Made Sukadana collaborates with Japanese Kawamura Kohey to share more about the Wayang art form from both traditional and contemporary perspectives, as well as local and international perspectives. Kawamura Koheysai’s Shadow & Music, 15 July 2017, 7 PM, Bentara Budaya Bali

Kawamura Koheysai has studied Balinese art, as well as contemporary Wayang in the last 18 years. He has performed internationally, as well as locally at various cities in Indonesia. Koheysai is back at Bentara Budaya Bali this coming Saturday. In his performances, Koheysai does everything himself. That includes the music, storytelling, and puppetry. This time, he’ll be telling a story titled ‘Pulau Walak dan Pulau Fiksi’. If you enjoy puppetry, don’t miss this solo contemporary puppetry performance! For more information, click here.

Part of DenPasar 2017, Urban Sketchers Bali organizes a few workshops on sketching. This Saturday, Achmad Mar’ie will guide participants on watercolor technique. DenPasar is a series of programs put together by Cush Cush Gallery to provide platform for young artists and creative communities in Bali to come together and create work.
