Top Picks of Indonesia art events in Bali, Yogyakarta and Jakarta from 9 – 15 July 2018
Titian Art Space in Bali presents the exhibition Mokoh for the house of Mondo. The late I Dewa Putu Mokoh was a Balinese painter who had exhibited his works internationally. A couple of his exhibitions include the 1993 Venice Bienalle – a two-man exhibition with Mondo, as well as a solo exhibition at the Fukuoka Art Museum in Japan in 1995. Mokoh used pastel pallet in his paintings and they often painted scenes of family and children playing, as an expression of his yearning for the days of childhood. Opening of Mokoh for the house of Mondo takes place on Monday, 9th July 2018 at 7 PM at Titian Art Space in Ubud Bali. In Yogyakarta, don’t miss the 23rd Yogyakarta Gamelan Festival. The festival presents performances, exhibitions, workshops & discussions. There will be events on the 7th, 10th, 11th, and 13th – 15th of July. On the 7th, catch small performances by various gamelan groups at various places in the greater Yogyakarta area. On the 10th of July, participate in a discussion on the place of Gamelan in the global world. On the 11th, listen to a talk on music parameters and reproduction of Gamelan sounds. And on the 13th to 15th of July catch concerts by various local and International Gamelan groups. The Yogyakarta Gamelan Festival will take place at Gadjahmada University. Also in Yogyakarta, on Wednesday and Thursday (11 – 12 July 2018) catch Pentas Kesenian Raykat, a 2-day event of traditional Indonesian art performances. Performances include Reog Wayang, Jathilan Jaranan Jambul and Musik Lumbung Band among many others. Ki Seno Nugroho will close the 2-day event with a traditional overnight Wayang Kulit performance. Don’t miss this rare chance of catching traditional dances and music from various parts of Java. Pentas Kesenian Rakyat will take place at Taman Budaya Yogya. Institut Francais Indonesia and Istituto Italiano di Cultura co-present a concert titled Persembahan untuk Nice (A Concert for Nice). The concert was inspired by the tragedy in Nice that took place on 14 July 2016. Trumpeter Marco Vezzoso, pianist Alessandro Collina, and poet Gianno Balbis, will combine poetry with beautiful jazz compositions. Persembahan untuk Nice will take place at 7 PM on 11 July 2018 at the auditorium of Insitut Francais Indonesia’s Thamrin location in Jakarta. For more information on the performance, click here.
On Sunday, 15 July, take your little ones to Kampung Lawang, a performance by Sanggar Aktor Cilik Indonesia (Indonesia Young Actors Studio). Kampung Lawang follows the life of Aruk, a small boy, and his family in a small village in Lampung Indonesia. The Indonesian Young Actors Studio is made up of children aged 3.5 to 15 years olds who go through regular acting training.
