Top Picks of Indonesia art events in Bali dan Jakarta from 6 – 12 August 2018
We start this week with a rare Sumbanese traditional songs offering. Rumah Sanur in Bali presents It’s Showcase Vol. 2 – “Poetic Voices from the island of Sumba”. Ata Ratu will share traditional Sumbanese songs and culture while playing her Jungga, an almost extinct Sumbanese instrument. Through her performances, Ata aims to maintain and share the Sumbanese heritage with local and international audience. In Jakarta, Kineforum presents its first edition of Alteraksi. Alteraksi is a program that provides a space to spread ideas through a combination of film appreciation sessions, idea distillation, exchanges of perspectives and reflections. Between 6 and 8 August, Kineforum will screen 3 different films of adapted works that will challenge your thoughts. Each film will be followed by a dialogue session or a session where audience will be presented with a question to answer. All films will be screened at Kineforum at Taman Ismail Marzuki. On Friday, some of Indonesia’s great young choreographers are showcasing their works under Jakarta Dance Meet Up (JDMU) #Selection 2018. Six choreographers were selected from previous JDMU performances to join Choreo-Lab, a choreography intensive that took place in March 2018 where they received mentorship by the dance committee of the Jakarta Arts Council. The works that they created will be showcased in the JDMU Selection on Friday, 10th August 2018 at 7 PM at Gedung Kesenian Jakarta. Registration for tickets had closed. However, some tickets will be released on the day of the show. To get them, you can register on the day of show at Gedung Kesenian Jakarta at 5:30 pm. Salihara International Performing Arts Festival (SIPFest) is happening this month and next! There are some lectures on performing arts presented this week. Didik Nini Thowok is doing a lecture concert on Cross Gender Tradition in Indonesia’s Performing Arts on 7 August 2018 at 8 PM. There is also Saya dan Teater Kontemporer di Indonesia (Me and Contemporary Theatre in Indonesia), a discussion with Jim Adhi Limas. Jim will share about how he founded Studiklub Teater Bandung in the late 50s and the growth of Indonesian contemporary theatre after the independence. Saya dan Teater Kontemporer di Indonesia will take place on 11 August 2018 at 4 PM. Click here for more information on the talk. Other performances at SIPFest this week include Cablaka, a dance performance based on lengger Banyumasan and dangdut performance, and a performance by the string quartet Quatuor Bozzini.
