Cerpan-Cerpen: New Works, at OUR ArtProjects, 11 Oct – 3 Nov.
Jalaini Abu Hassan, better known as Jai, needs little introduction in Malaysia’s visual arts scene. This solo exhibition by Jai has a loosely-interconnected series featuring mundane scenes of life in KL and Taiping. A reflection of belonging, homeland, and the past through an intimate examination of personal history.
The exhibition opening is Friday 12 Oct, 7–9pm, with a short performance at 8pm. Richard Koh also has an exhibition opening on the same day, at 5pm. More info here.
HOL (Higher Order Love) Chapter 3, Scab: Lucky Draw, at Richard KOH Fine Art, 12 Oct – 2 Nov
The third chapter of Hasanul Isyraf Idris’s Higher Order Love series presents large format mixed media drawings on paper, aluminium sculptures and video animation. The exhibition opening will be held 12 Oct, 5pm–8pm at the gallery.

Perfect Strangers, at Jenerator, 12 Oct, 8pm
Kuah Jenhan’s Perfect Strangers returns from a successful tour in Australia. The performance was spurred by an impromptu trip to Uzbekistan, and tackles race, privilege, switching perspectives, and hot tips on Central Asia’s currency black markets. Admission is RM60, for those 18 years and above only, with a smart casual dress code.

Stereo Hearts, at Live Fact, 12 Oct, 8pm

Animation Malaysia: Traditional Art & Contemporary Painting as Inspiration, at ILHAM Gallery, 13 Oct, 3pm
Writer and film director Hassan Abd Muthalib highlights a selection of Malaysian animation shorts that demonstrate the influence of traditional Malaysian art and music (eg: wayang kulit, batik, gamelan). This will be followed by other examples worldwide where progression of the form is demonstrated.

If Walls Could Talk ft Luka Lesson, Phil, Aalex & Raja Ahmad, at Gaslight Cafe KL,11 Oct, 8pm
Quite a few featured acts for this edition of Walls, with founder of Perak Arts Foundation Raja Ahmad, singer-songwriter Aalex Termizi, and two Australian poets (Philip Wilcox is also performing in Beetle Prayer this week). As usual, KL’s beloved spoken word open mic has a full line up, and it’s a great place to be swept off your feet by someone else’s words.

Beetle Prayer: An Anti-Poetry Show, at Lot’ng, 13 Oct, 8:30pm
A spoken word and comedy theatre engagement, written and performed by award-winning slam poet Philip Wilcox (Aus). This show examines how life is often a battle between storyteller and storytelling, and how poetry makes it beautiful. Tickets online are RM40 (RM30 concession). Tickets are RM45 at the door (RM35 concessions).

Art Expo Malaysia, at MECC, 12–14 Oct
The longest-running international art fair in SEA returns in its 12th edition, featuring 65 art galleries from 22 countries, exhibiting 1,500 pieces of artworks. Special exhibitions by A+ Works of Art, Segaris Art Centre and Richard Koh Fine Art are included. Wei-Ling Gallery has a project room. Admission fee is RM10. There will also be art talks available, with topics ranging from art conservation, art evolutions, to collecting, and more.
