Barus is a region in Central Tapanuli in North Sumatra, Indonesia. Between the 7th and 15th century, Barus was a center of spice trading in Indonesia that connected the region to the West through the Silk Road. The traders of Iraq, Iran, Egypt, India and China knew Barus as the producer of camphor and incense. As a trading port, Barus was also a center for exchanges of culture, arts, and knowledge. Through photography, Hasiholan Siahaan XIV invites us to revisit Barus and imagine how the port was during its glory days. Hasiholan’s exhibition that is titled Barus – Kota Emporium & Peradaban Nusantara runs until 19 June 2018 at Institut Francaise Indonesia’s Wijaya location. His photos are also available in a newly published book with the same title. Exhibition is free. For more information on the exhibition and photography book, click here.
