Top Picks of Indonesia art events in Makassar, Yogyakarta, Bandung, and Jakarta from 30 April – 6 May 2018
It’s an exciting week for art in Indonesia as we have 2 festivals that are opening this week!
The Makassar International Writers Festival is back this week from 2 – 5 May 2018. Since it was started in 2011, the festival has become an important event for literature in the eastern part of Indonesia, connecting writers and literary lovers in a relaxed but engaging atmosphere. The Makassar International Writers Festivals carry the theme of “Voice/Noise” to highlight the need of a clear voice amidst a very busy Indonesian political year in 2018/2019. One of Yogyakarta’s favorite arts fair, ARTJOG, is back this year running from May 4th to June 4th 2018! ARTJOG aims to be a melting pot for all art forms from visual arts to performing arts, as well as to give the opportunity for people to meet and for exchanges of thoughts and ideas to take place. ARTJOG offers exhibitions of visual arts including commissioned works and works by young artists. There will also be performances of other art forms on a daily basis. Outside of these two festivals, there are other art events that might interest you. If you’re a classical music lover and happen to be in Bandung this week, start your week with a cello and piano concert titled Bandung Je T’aime, presented by Bandung Philharmonic. In the concert, cellist Hee Young Lim and pianist Yohanes Siem will play repertoires from Debussy, Satie, Offenbach, and more. Performance will take place at 7:30 pm this Monday, 30 April 2018. Some music videos can be so intricate and beautifully made that they should be viewed as art works. The Short Film Festival in Oberhausen has selected the best music videos as part of the festival. The music videos selected are bold, experimental, have high level of artistry, and are very different from the mainstream music video. Goethe Institut presents a screening of these music videos that are produced between 2008 and 2015. The screening will take place at Kedai Kebun Forum in Yogyakarta on 2 May 2018 at 7 PM. Chairil Anwar is a figure that is very closely related to Indonesian modern poems. However, people mostly only know him as related to his poem “Aku”.
