Top Picks of Indonesia art events in Bandung and Jakarta from 2 – 8 July 2018

Dance lovers and practitioners, we have several dance events in Jakarta and Bandung for you to choose from.

Today (Monday, 2 July 2018) and tomorrow are the last 2 days to catch classes at the Youth Dance Festival happening in Jakarta. Take ballet classes from Jeffrey Tan, Contemporary classes from Ryan Tan, and Hip Hop classes from Chemmy. Participants of the classes may be selected for the performance happening on 5 July 2018. All workshops take place at Nyi Ageng Serang building in Kuningan. The performance will take place at Gedung Kesenian Jakarta from 7 to 9 PM on 5 July 2018. If you live Bandung and love dance, you’ll be able to take classes from some of Indonesian leading dancers from Friday, 6 July 2018 to Sunday, 8 July 2018 at Legacy. Presented by the Bandung Dance Collective, you’ll get to experience classes on Contemporary dance, Jazz, Bollywood Fusion and Malay dance. In addition to the class, there will also be performances by all the faculties of Legacy on Sunday, 8 July 2018 from 7:30 – 9 PM. Back in Jakarta, don’t miss Catuah Langkah Gumarang Sakti, a performance by the renowned Gumarang Sakti Dance Company. Catuah Langkah tells the story of  Gumarang Sakti Dance company and its evolution in the last 36 years. The late Gusmiati Suid began Gumarang Sakti in 1982 as a traditional Minangkabau dance company. The company had slowly evolved to a contemporary dance company, especially after her son, Boi G Sakti took over. Boi G Sakti also helped the company in expanding its international presence. If you enjoy reading book or attending plays, you might be interested in Komunitas Salihara’s latest book club. This round of book clubs will focus on reading scripts by Indonesian playwrights. This book club is divided into 4 Saturdays and will start this Saturday, 7 July 2018. For this first Saturday, the club will read and discuss Realist scripts by Utuy Tatang Sontani, Usmar Ismail, and Motingo Boesje. All book club gatherings are free.
