Weekly Picks: Indonesia (19 – 25 February 2018)

Top Picks of Indonesia art events in Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta and Bali from 19 – 25 February 2018

We begin our first pick this week in Jakarta with the launch of Goenawan Mohamad’s new book: Si Majenun dan Sayid Hamid. In his new book, Goenawan discusses several areas from the famous Spanish novel Don Quixote, particularly how Don Quixote relates to history, modernity, and faith. Join the discussion on Don Quixote and Islam at the book launch that will take place at Komunitas Salihara on Tuesday, 20 February 2018 at 8 PM. For more information on the event and to register for it, click here.

Still at Salihara, come on Wednesday, 21 February 2018 to watch the screenings of Laut Bercerita, a short film lifted from a novel of the same title written by renowned Indonesian writer and journalist, Leila S. Chudori. Laut Bercerita is a fiction on loss, mystery, and love. Film screenings will take place at 4:15 PM and 5 PM at Teater Salihara. If you’re in Bandung this week, visit semAta gallery, a special gallery and art space created to bring art to children’s lives. This week, the gallery is presenting I Am Here, an exhibition by Emilie Monty. Emilie is an art student from the University of Western Australia that has been in residence at semAta in the last month. The works presented in this exhibition is a sharing of her journey at the gallery and the results of the afterschool program she conducted titled “How Art You Today?”. This exhibition is open everyday except for Thursday. For more information on the exhibition, visit Semata Gallery’s Instagram account here.

Over in Yogyakarta, Teater Selasar, a theatre lab of the Sociopolitical Faculty of Universitas Gadjah Mada, is holding a discussion on the role of theatre companies, specifically Teater Koma, in “Orde Baru” (new order) Indonesia. The era of “Orde Baru” is an authoritarian era in Indonesia between the year 1966 and 1998, where personal freedom was muted. At that time, some theatre companies continued to fight for freedom of expression and social changes through their works. Join this discussion on Tuesday, 20 February 2018 at 1 PM at Lorong Gedung BC Fisipol Universitas Gadjah Mada. For more information, visit Teater Selasar’s Instagram page here.

Over in Bali, don’t miss the last few performances of the CushCush Gallery‘s Play Play Charity Performance series. On Friday, 23 February 2018, the Gallery presents the premiere of Kawamura Koheysai’s puppetry performance, The Search of a New Island, Nishioka the Monkey.
