Presented with a theme “Menyemai Bumi di Tanah Sendiri” or to nourish the earth in our own land, Festival Musik Rimbang Baling is a unique festival held on the banks of a river in Rimbang Baling, an important rainforest where the Sumatran tigers are protected, with the intention to raise awareness on doing our part to save the earth and animals. The festival presents various musicians from Riau, the region, and other parts of Indonesia. There will also be theatre and other performances held as part of the festival. Don’t miss some of Indonesia’s thought leaders in theatre, literature, and culture in this symposium as they discuss post-orientalism and cultural appropriation issues in Indonesia historically and today. Moderated by Nirwan Dewanto, this symposium presents Anak Agung Rai, Prof. Dr. Bambang Sugiharto, Garin Nugroho, Goenawan Mohamad, and many more. The symposium will aim to discuss the basis of cultural appropriation and reasons behind viewing the locals as ‘the other’, as well as other factors that affect the relationship between westerners and locals. Memori Disorder, 27 – 28 January 2018, Gedung Kesenian Jakarta, Taman Ismail Marzuki, Jakarta
Created by director Edian Munaedi, Memori Disorder is a theatre performance by Teater Stasiun that started as an observation of memory disorder symptoms that are experienced by lonely seniors. In this production, Teater Stasiun aims to capture the hidden fragments of those memories through the actor’s bodies, puppets and masks. There will be a discussion on how the production came about on 27 January 2018 at 4 PM. The performance will take place on the 28th of January at 2 PM for students and 8 PM for members of public. Bandung Philharmonic opens its 2018 season with Krakatoa. The night presents a combination of international and local compositions including Grieg’s “Peer Gynt Suita No.1, Op. 46.”, Mussorgsky’s “Night on Bald Mountain”, Smetana’s “River Moldau”, Tan De Seng & Wiriadisastra’s “Aki Manggut Awi”, and a viola concerto titled “Krakatoa”.
