The Actors Studio unveils its biggest production of 2024. Written by Joe Hasham OAM and directed by Dato’ Dr Faridah Merican, The Sisters Soong is a brand-new play that relates the story of the famous and somewhat infamous sisters; three of the most influential siblings of 20th century China.
Born in China and educated in America, “Big Sister” Ai-ling married banker H.H. Kung, who later became Finance Minister, “Red Sister” Ching-ling married the Father of Modern China, Sun Yat-sen, and “Little Sister” Mei-ling married Chiang Kai-shek.
In this modern retelling that alternates between fact and fiction, the playwright has taken some artistic license and cleverly woven this family saga that spans a century with the help of a narrator.
The Sisters Soong will be brought to life by an award-winning cast with choreography by Kenny Shim, costuming by Beatrice Looi, music and arrangement by Tan Zhi Yong against a set by Scenographer Yusman Mokhtar and live music under the baton of Maestro Lee Kok Leong.

Since its inception in 1989, The Actors Studio has been presenting groundbreaking theatre in Malaysia. In 2006, it created The Actors Studio Seni Teater Rakyat arm to bridge the gap between the arts and the people in line with the National Arts and Culture Department’s efforts to ‘merakyatkan seni’. The Actors Studio just celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2019.
