Pansak Yakan: Dancing among the Yakan of Lamitan, Basilan with Earl Francis C. Pasilan

February 29 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

The Yakan, an indigenous group of the province of Basilan in Southern Philippines, is known for its cultural traditions as it is for its agricultural practices. This discussion with Earl Francis C. Pasilan focuses on the Yakan’s ability to engage with and adapt to changes to their physical environments, and how these changed their acts of performance and ritual. It tracks the way in which the Yakan, in the end, created its own movement vocabulary, one that speaks to categories of gender, social status, and purpose, and affects aspects of performance such as music, instruments, and clothing, as well as the mounting of the event itself. This talk is presented in partnership with Mindanao State University Iligan Institute of Technology Center for Culture and Arts

This event is free and open to the public through the museum’s Facebook page.
