Across his paintings, Leonard employs luminous hues and thick and thin glazes of paint to describe the changing social landscape we face today. In the series Helicopter Country, figures caught in states of bewilderment, confusion, and anxiety are surrounded by architectural elements from familiar sights such as apartment bocks, parks and playgrounds, malls and syscrapers, flora and fauna.
Rendered with an aerial, top-down perspective, these landscapes describe the absurdity and frustration at the horrors facing the world today. From climate change to xenophobia, conflict, and the rise of totalitarian regimes, the vibrant colors are a silver lining and longing for hope of a kinder and more beautiful world. At the same time, the misplacement and awkwardness of these landscapes hint at a surreal and dystopian world, concealing feelings of confusion, absurdity, fear, and repression that manifest from the eerie rise of control, injustice and suffering
