Father and daughter Takezo and Mitsue Fukuyoshi lead a carefree, simple existence in East Hijiyama, Hiroshima. However, both are plagued by the aftermath of 6th August 1945, when an atomic bomb was unexpectedly dropped on their hometown.
Three years later in 1948, the Fukuyoshis continue to grapple with their trauma. Mitsue is twenty-three, afraid of loud sounds and finding love. Takezo, her ever loyal confidante, worries endlessly for his daughter’s future happiness. How will the pair reconcile their pasts to move on with their present?
With endearing performances by Koji Miyoshi and Joanne Ng, The Face of Jizo by Hisashi Inoue recounts a resilient tale with moments of familial humour, in the face of postwar tragedy. Directed by Alin Mosbit, The Face of Jizo marks its first staging in Singapore, after its acclaimed 2023 run in Sydney.

Playwright: Hisashi Inoue (1934-2010)
Hisashi Inoue was a leading Japanese playwright and writer of comic fiction. Aside from Inoue’s long and distinguished career as a novelist and playwright, he also contributed to several anime series as a writer and lyricist.
In 1964, Inoue became one of the scriptwriters for NHK’s (Japan Broadcasting Corporation) puppet theatre program Hyokkori Hyotanjima. His works won the hearts of many with their humor and satire, accompanied with an unfaltering sense of the contemporary. He made his debut in the theatre with the play Nihonjin no Heso (Belly Button of the Japanese) for Theatre Echo in 1969.
Other notable works include Chichi to Kuraseba (The Face of Jizo), Yuki ya Konkon, Ningen Gokaku, Mokuami Opera, Rensagai no Hitobito and Ani Otouto.
