Galeri Nasional Indonesia is holding an exhibition of works by Indonesian women artists, titled Into The Future, in conjunction with a launch of a book with the same title. Into The Future features 21 works from 21 female contemporary visual artists. These artists create works that integrate technology, video, lights, bacteria, and codes into their art works. With this exhibition, curator Carla Bianpoen and Citra Smara Dewi wish to give indication of the direction of where the female spirit can take the Indonesian contemporary art world. In Surabaya, on 7-8 March 2019, Teater Perdikan presents Sengkuni 2019. Written by Emha Ainun Najib, Sengkuni shines a light on the destructive characters in each of us an the effects on society. Bentara Budaya Bali presents Memedi Sawah, a solo exhibition by Hari Budiono. In Bali, “memedi sawah” are the scarecrows that are planted at various rice fields to scare critters and birds from eating the rice. Hari Budiono uses the rice field as an analogy of an ecosystem that has to be protected from disturbances. Unfortunately, the reality shows that those with the role to protect often becomes those that create the disturbance. Memedi Sawah shows installations and works that are created as social commentaries to what is happening in today’s society. Memedi Sawah is open until 9 March 2019 at Bentara Budaya Bali.
