Top Picks of Indonesia art events in Bandung and Jakarta from 18-24 March 2019

In Bandung, catch the last couple days of the Bandung Contemporary Art Award (BaCAA) exhibition: Assemblage. Since it was created in 2010, BaCAA has been an award program created to stimulate the growth of contemporary art in Indonesia. Winners of the award receives residencies, trips to other global contemporary art center, and some prize-winning money. Assemblage is a recollection of past finalists from 2010 and 2017 and is created to track the development of past awards recipients. If you’re a contemporary dancer in Bandung, you might be interested in taking a contemporary dance workshop by Razan Mohamad. Razan received a scholarship to attend the Hofesh Shechter Company’s intensive workshop at STRUT Dance last December. Organised by the Bandung Dance Collective, Razan will share what he learned in this 3-hour workshop. Donation for the 3-hour class is IDR 100,000. For more information on the workshop, click here.

On Tuesday, renowned filmmaker Garin Nugroho is launching his new book Negara Melodrama along with a music performance. Negara Melodrama was written to share the social, cultural, and political situation of this country. This book launch is supported by other artists such as Irwan Harahap and Joko Gombloh who will be part of the music performance that accompany the launch. The launch will take place at Bentara Budaya Jakarta at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, 19 March 2019. Also in Jakarta, Forum Aktor Yogyakarta is performing a play titled Di Punggungmu Kusandarkan Waktu (I Rest Time on Your Back). This play is adapted from Sapardi Djoko Damono’s Pagi Bening, which is a translation of Serafín dan Joaquin Álvarez Quintero’s Sunny Morning. Through the comedy of 2 characters, Forum Aktor Yogyakarta hopes to makes sense of the current political situation in Indonesia. Ticket to the performance is IDR 65,000.
