Top Picks of Indonesia art events in Bali and Jakarta from 1-7 April 2019
Every year, on the 21st of April, Indonesia celebrates the life of one of her women’s emancipation figures, Kartini. In conjunction to Hari Kartini and in an effort to continue supporting the works of Indonesian women, Futuwonder gathered 8 female artists from various background to talk about and create works around women issues in Indonesia, particularly taking the seeds of creation from what they observe in their daily lives. A collaboration between Uma Seminyak and Futuwonder, “Tanda Seru!” is presented as a call for hope and an avenue to raise question and start dialogues around women’s emancipation in Indonesia. “Tanda Seru!” opens until 13 April 2019 at Uma Seminyak in Bali. The story of Roro Jonggrang is a Javanese folktale of love and betrayal that makes up the tale behind the majestic Prambanan temple in Yogyakarta. On the 6th of April, Wayang Suket Indonesia will present this story in a shadow play using Wayang Suket at Galeri Indonesia Kaya. Wayang Suket is a unique type of hand-held puppet that is made of Mendong grasses that are woven into various characters, as well as various shapes like temples and other properties that support the storyline. Roro Jonggrang by Wayang Suket will be performed on 6 April 2019 at 3 PM at Galeri Indonesia Kaya. For more information, click here.
To mark 40 years of Biranul Anas Zaman’s work in the arts, Galeri Nasional Indonesia and the Secretary of Culture and Arts presents Serat Jiwa (Soul Fibre), a tapestry exhibition and an exhibition of traditional woven cloth artifact from Sumba, as well as historical documentation that have been collated by Biranul Anas Zaman. Through the items exhibited, visitors can see the progression of thoughts and influences that Biranul Anas went through in his decades of creation. Museum Macan is holding a special afternoon talk on art and poetry with senior artist Jeihan, who is currently having an exhibition at the museum. Jeihan, who is known for his signature of paintings with “blacked-eyed eyes” was also part of the circle of poets in Cicadas, Bandung, where he grew up. This special discussion will also feature author Remy Sylado, poet Sapardi Djoko Damono, and senior journalist Bambang Bujono. This discussion is held in conjunction to Jeihan’s exhibition Days in Cicadas that is currently on display at Museum Macan. The discussion will take place on Friday, 5 April 2019 from 4 – 6 PM.
