SUMMARY:Hossan-AH! In The High Arts
DESCRIPTION:A spectacular journey through Singapore’s arts scene. \nJoin the OG Singapore Boy Hossan Leong in an extraordinary theatrical experience that weaves four decades of artistic evolution through the eyes of someone who lived through it all. This performance of song and storytelling is inspired by Hossan’s personal journey—which mirrors Singapore’s own cultural awakening—from church pianist to becoming one of the nation’s most versatile entertainers. \nBe dazzled as Hossan does EVERYTHING—acting\, singing\, stand-up—taking you on his own exhilarating ride from the 1980s to today. Experience beloved songs reimagined\, and hilarious personal anecdotes about the highlights and moments of despair that shape our artistic identity. \nWatch as cultural influences converge to create something uniquely Singaporean. This witty\, nostalgic\, and thoroughly entertaining exploration connects the dots between our past and present\, revealing the joy of discovering who we truly are through the arts. Don’t miss this celebration of every artist\, arts lover\, and dreamer who has contributed to Singapore’s creative soul.

SUMMARY:HOME
DESCRIPTION:On stage\, a house appears from nothing. It goes up fast\, choreographed like time-lapse photography. Residents move in\, move out\, get evicted\, burn it down\, loot it\, rent it\, remodel it\, get married and divorced in it\, grow up in it\, die in it\, haunt it. And all the while\, they leave and live among traces of residents from the present\, past and future. They throw a party\, as if everyone who ever lived there cohabitated\, transcending time and space. \nHOME is a large-scale performance work that explores and explodes the relationship between “house” and “home”. A visual and physical spectacle\, HOME combines dance\, illusion\, live music\, homespun engineering\, and inventive audience interaction to compose a work that asks\, “Where is home? If it is not a place\, what is home?” \nHOME aims to awaken us to current housing dilemmas\, local and global. The universal and timely themes of gentrification and migration are rendered in the choreography of ordinary people inhabiting a structure\, leaving that structure through a variety of social\, political\, personal\, and aesthetic forces\, and replacing one another. HOME seeks to use the house of the theatre as a lens through which we might see the impact of these forces at work—the illusion of home; the transitory nature of dwelling; the constraints of time and money; the impossible structural demands of a house; the absurdity; and at times the impossibility of trying to make a house a home. In the face of entropy\, we struggle to build infrastructure\, family community\, art. We fail\, and we try again.

SUMMARY:Told By My Mother
DESCRIPTION:In the second chapter of his trilogy on love\, Lebanese choreographer Ali Chahrour draws from his own family history and in torn-up Lebanon to weave a tapestry of poignant stories. \nAt the heart of it\, a mother\, Leila\, clings to her child Abbas\, striving to shield him from the fate of martyrdom. A little further down\, another mother\, Fatmeh\, who never stopped looking for her missing child\, Hassan. These tales\, echoing through time\, form an infinite loop of love and loss. \nWith their stories\, these ordinary heroines breathe life into the tenderness and fierce intensity of maternal love. On stage\, they give birth to heart-rending family portraits\, so striking in the infinite beauty of filial relations. \nAli Chahrour\, actress Hala Omran\, and musicians Ali Hout and Abed Kobeissy (Two or The Dragon) accompany these narratives with music inspired as much by Arab culture as by urban sounds. Through movement\, song\, words and music\, generations converge and fracture\, like the narrow and unfathomable eternal love between a mother and a child. Absolute.

SUMMARY:Titoudao [G]

This epic biography also parallels pivotal events in Singapore’s history to showcase how our lives have been transformed over the course of over 5 decades. \n“Titoudao arrived on stage at a time where Singapore theatre was hitting its stride\, but has continued to beat the same drum long after\, echoing the need to preserve our intangible heritage\, to elevate our fading past.” – The Straits Times \n“I lost my wayang virginity to Titoudao and had absolutely no regrets. We may not see much wayang these days\, but this play may just be that magical bridge that links us to Singapore’s vanishing treasures.” – TODAY Singapore \n“An Iconic Singaporean Theatrical Masterpiece” – Eksentrika \n“Titoudao connects with the young and old – it is a timeless piece of theatre. ” – Centre42 \n“The play feels like an intimate behind-the-scenes look at a wayang actress’ life. Older audience members would leave the play reminiscing about the good old times. As for me\, I left the play seeing wayang in a new light\, with newfound respect for the craft.” – TheSmartLocal \nFor more information: https://toyfactory.com.sg/titoudao/

SUMMARY:The Prose and the Passion
DESCRIPTION:The Prose and the Passion takes E.M. Forster\, one of the greatest English novelists of all time\, as its starting point\, and is inspired by his letters\, his life\, and his novels A Passage to India and Maurice. Multiple timelines converge and diverge\, bound together inextricably by the characters that populate Forster’s novels\, and consumed by the loneliness that is inevitable in bodies that exist outside of the prescribed narratives. Written by Haresh Sharma and directed by Chong Tze Chien\, The Prose and the Passion creates\, through lyricism and fantasy\, a theatrical world where reality and fiction intersect\, where time is fluid\, and where human connection is more crucial than ever. \nDuration: 2h\nVenue: Victoria Theatre\nTickets: $78\, $58\, $38

SUMMARY:ANGELA (a strange loop)
DESCRIPTION:ANGELA (a strange loop) by Susanne Kennedy & Markus Selg (DE) is a programme under Singapore International Festival of Arts (SIFA) 2024. \nANGELA (a strange loop) is a close-up of a woman’s life as she struggles to make sense of her existence. Join her in a thought-provoking journey as she navigates everyday situations: illness and recovery\, waking and sleeping\, giving birth and being born\, ageing and death. ANGELA is made up of millions of experiences\, many of which come from other people’s stories. Ultimately\, she might be nothing but a strange loop\, an endless sequence. The virtual and the real become blurred\, while ANGELA attempts to construct herself and hold it together by repeating her stories. But what happens if we zoom in on ANGELA\, closer and closer\, to understand that self? What is hidden there? \nWith innovative use of technology and a compelling narrative\, ANGELA (a strange loop) takes us on a deep dive into the fundamental questions of existence\, identity\, consciousness and the nature of reality. It is a poetic\, social analysis through the lens of the diseased rather than the healthy. How can a community deal with the individual’s experience of illness? How do we care for each other\, when life comes to an end?

SUMMARY:The Romeo
DESCRIPTION:Picture a dance. Let’s call it the “Romeo”\, after Shakespeare’s young lover who\, in ignited enthusiasm\, believed he could conquer death. Picture this dance\, which would be known all over the world\, although no one would know when and where it was created. A large-scale piece for a dozen performers\, Trajal Harrell forges a speculative style of dancing inspired by the primal impulse behind the desire to dance\, and to transcend the here and now. It is a dance which lends its characteristics to a multitude of protagonists. As court dance\, voguing pose\, or pastoral dance\, the Romeo has already lived a thousand lives. No matter where the Romeo might have originated: imagine this dance that people of all origins\, genders\, and generations\, of all temperaments and moods\, dance when they face their tragedies and only dance. Trajal Harrell will now bring it to Singapore. And maybe that’s where the story really begins. \nDuration: 1h 15m\, no intermission\nVenue: Victoria Theatre\nTickets: $78\, $58\, $38

SUMMARY:ME\, YOU\, THEN\, NOW
DESCRIPTION:ME\, YOU\, THEN\, NOW is a self-portrait in movement\, video\, and words: a performative archive. We are invited to join artist Muna Tseng on a retrospective journey\, from her days of being a young artist weaving her web of identity within the urban mythology of downtown New York City (NYC)\, through to the present with her meta-meditations on making new art today. As the fourth instalment in her Family Portraits series\, comprising poignant cross-cultural inventive performance portraits of her brother\, her mother and her paternal grandfather\, this latest portrait is Muna telling her own story\, as a distinguished mature woman artist in the 70th year of her life.

SUMMARY:WE WILL SLAM YOU WITH OUR WINGS
DESCRIPTION:The future is female – and so is the past\, as depicted by these portraits of girls as unlikely warriors. Together\, they boldly reframe the histories of iconic women through the centuries. \nWE WILL SLAM YOU WITH OUR WINGS is a video and sound installation of seven hanging screens\, representing a series of 19th century imperialistic portraits. An army of young girls aged 8 to 16 each stand in her own frame\, in her own regalia and holding her own stance of power. Joanna Dudley is their mentor\, encouraging the girls to take autonomy over their own voices and to create the world afresh.

SUMMARY:Old Gaze
DESCRIPTION:For Faith (Hossan Leong) and Hope (Kumar)\, the New Year is just another day. But when an old friend shows up suddenly\, their lives are turned upside down. They find themselves embroiled with spies\, childhood trauma and GENDER PRONOUNS. \nIt’s been almost 20 years since the gang met up. Will they be able to let go of the ghosts from their past? Will they be able to identify as ELDERLY? What world is this where the GAYBOURS are banging\, the Health HOMOTION Board speaks the truth and MINISTRY OF NUCLEAR FAMILIES even exists? \nBrash\, audacious and just rollicking good fun\, Old Gaze is the third and final instalment following The Necessary Stage’s seminal LGBTQ plays Mardi Gras (2003) and Top or Bottom (2004). \nWritten and directed by Cultural Medallion recipient Haresh Sharma\, Old Gaze stars the absolutely fabulous Kumar\, Hossan Leong\, Rody Vera and Siti Khalijah Zainal\, alongside veteran actor Liow Shi Suen and newcomers Azura Farid and Medli Dorothea Loo.
