SUMMARY:Images of Exotic Lands
DESCRIPTION:Music by Eric Watson\, Maurice Ravel & Francis Poulenc\n\nTwo of Singapore’s most colourful pianists join re:Sound in this colourful celebration of world music. Francis Poulenc’s brilliant Concerto for Two Pianos is unmistakably French\, yet makes reference to other great music influences such as Mozart and the gamelan music of Bali. \nCultural Medallion recipient Eric Watson’s Arabesque for Flute\, composed for re:Sound\, is inspired by the ornamental designs that can be seen in many examples of ancient Islamic art. It makes its world premiere in this concert\, and will feature flute soloist\, Rachel Ho. \nRounding off this evocative programme is Maurice Ravel’s memorial to the great baroque composer Couperin\, beautifully orchestrated in a neo-classical / impressionist style. \nMusicians \n\nre:Sound\nRachel Ho (solo flute)\nNicholas Loh (piano)\nJonathan Shin (piano\n\nTickets via BookMyShow $38/$28\n(15% discounts for senior citizens / students / child)\nhttps://sg.bookmyshow.com/events/exotic13\n \n

SUMMARY:SYC & Friends: 60 Years Young
DESCRIPTION:“Youth” contains multitudes. It is about growing up and learning to confront the beautiful\, the ugly and the complex. It is about looking to history for inspiration and hope. Ultimately\, it is about establishing one’s place in the world. \n  \n60 years after our founding as the Singapore Youth Choir and 20 years since we became the SYC Ensemble Singers\, we examine this word that we once carried in our name but whose essence remains part of our identity today. \n  \nMusic by Singaporeans Leong Yoon Pin\, Joyce Bee Tuan Koh and Diana Soh epitomise our passion for sonic experimentation while hearkening to the village that made us. Eric Whitacre’s “The Stolen Child” and Cristian Grases’ new setting of “Lux Aeterna” speak to the human grappling with eternity and the inevitable passage of time. Finally\, Arvo Pärt’s “Te Deum” is at once our reflection on six decades of music making and our ode of joy and thanksgiving. \n  \nTogether with the Wayfarer Sinfonietta\, choir alumni and friends as well as a new generation of Singapore choristers\, we uncover what it means to 60 years young.

SUMMARY:The Czech Affair
DESCRIPTION:3 Masterpieces by 3 Czech Composers in One Show  \nThe evening begins with Suk’s nationalistic Czech piece\, Meditation on the Old Czech Chorale “Saint Wenceslas” Op.35a. Suk\, who studied under Dvorak\, is the turn-of-the-century composer\, and one of the leading composers in Czech Modernism. Stunning\, contemplative as well as emotional and nostalgic\, the four-part polyphonic work was written in 1914 in World War I in a time when the Czechs hoped to gain independence from the Austrian Empire\, of which they were part of. The composer wanted to ignite the Czech nationalist movement\, while the old Bohemian chorale on which it was based on honours Svatý Vaclav (St. Wenceslas)\, the patron Saint of Bohemia. \nThe second piece\, The String Quartet in F Major\, Op.96 “American”\, by composer Antonin Dvořák is a well-loved one. This work is very much idiomatic of his Czech roots but he combined the best of Czech folk tunes with New World spirituals and drum rhythms. It’s one of the most popular works in the string quartet repertory. Dvořák’s ‘American’ and Haas’ quartets are also featured on T’ang’s critically-acclaimed albums The Art of War and Made in America albums. \nPost intermission\, the Quartet turns their attention to the third piece – Pavel Haas String Quartet No. 2 “From the Monkey Mountains”. This piece was chosen in our programme as it is considered to be one of Haas’ first high points of his oeuvre. The Czech-Jewish composer\, who was greatly influenced by his teacher Leo Janácek\, combined the neo-classicist techniques of Igor Stravinsky with a very personal adaptation of jazz elements as well as the melodic and harmonic features Czech folk music and Jewish synagogue music.
