SUMMARY:The Studios: Escape to Batam
DESCRIPTION:Two of Singapore theatre’s most formidable multi-hyphenates craft a lyrical spectacle of the past and present\, speaking to all who have known the harsh bitterness and gentle longing of awaiting a new normal. \nWhat do stories of war tell us about human resilience and how we care for those closest to us? How does telling these stories help us to comfort and to heal? \nCreated by Claire Wong and Huzir Sulaiman\, Escape to Batam is a delicate tapestry of the past and the present\, weaving the remarkable lived experiences of Ming\, who spent his boyhood on the rural island of Batam to escape the Japanese Occupation of Singapore\, with his daughter’s personal stories of family\, loss and grief felt in the years since her father’s passing. Drawing parallels from their different life journeys\, daughter Claire finds herself discovering what it means to live with the pain of loving those who have left us\, and how to carry on for those who are still with us. \nDirector-Playwright Claire leads a phenomenal ensemble cast of Adib Kosnan\, Chaney Chia\, Genevieve Tan\, Rebekah Sangeetha Dorai\, and Neo Swee Lin. Poignant and humorous by turns\, Escape to Batam draws deeply on Claire and Huzir’s mastery of the written word and the theatrical medium to create a powerful new play that transcends generations.

SUMMARY:The Studios: FOOD
DESCRIPTION:“But it is safe to say\, at this dinner party\, even though you won’t be eating much\, Sobelle will give you plenty to chew on.” – Playbill \n“For all its playfulness\, this brilliant show has the power to make you look with fresh eyes at a daily act that you probably take for granted — a surefire sign of its worth as a work of genuinely thought-provoking art.” – Theatermania \nDo we need what we eat? Do we eat what we need? What does it really cost? Chew on these questions in this theatrical gastronomy experience unlike any other. \nAt the centre of the performance space lies a comically large banquet table\, encircled by audience members. The host of the evening\, Geoff Sobelle\, conducts this multi-sensory experience with deft hands\, animated expressions and impressive physicality. Activating the senses through a myriad of sounds\, scents\, sights and textures\, this acclaimed theatremaker stitches together a conversation about personal memories\, consumption and the evolution of food production over generations. You are invited to be a guest at the dinner party—whether around the table or from the surrounding seats. \nConcocted and performed by American actor\, producer and innovator Geoff Sobelle\, FOOD features his signature flavour of theatricality\, combining rigorous design\, onstage magic and subtle humour to create a participatory experience. Connecting the universal to the personal and distilling the absurd from the seemingly mundane\, FOOD invites the audience to explore their place within this exploration of food and consumption. \nFOOD is the third part of a performance trilogy that explores the abnormal corners of ordinary topics. Each installment—The Object Lesson (2013)\, HOME (2017)\, and FOOD (2022)—encourages the audience to ponder their personal connections with objects\, spaces\, and food. Following its acclaimed selection as an invited work for the prestigious Edinburgh International Festival\, FOOD sold out performances in 2023 and went on to tour in countries like Australia\, Korea and now\, Singapore. \nIt will be a dinner party to remember: gather round and feast on questions and contemplations surrounding society’s relationship with food and sustenance.

SUMMARY:March On: Goldfish
DESCRIPTION:The stage is set\, and everything begins as it would in any theatre show. But then\, chaos ensues—a flood warning is announced and the theatre suddenly transforms into an emergency centre as people rush in. \nAmid the turmoil\, ordinary objects transform into something entirely unexpected and new—a blue tarp becomes the ocean\, canned food turns into walls\, and rice bags hold back the rising water. Can we find the key to preventing an impending disaster? \nCreated by Terrapin in collaboration with Japanese artists Kouhei Narumi and Ayami Sasaki\, Goldfish blends stunning design with imaginative puppetry. A unique theatre experience\, Goldfish invites families to imagine new possibilities in an uncertain world.

SUMMARY:Huayi 2025: The Heart of Jun: Memoirs of Zhaojun
DESCRIPTION:A tale of 20th-century voyagers seeking their destinies\, set against the elegant beauty of traditional Nanyin music. Co-produced with Siong Leng Musical Association\, The Heart of Jun: Memoirs of Zhaojun presents a musical experience of discovery\, courage and determination. \nThree women leave China and set sail for Southeast Asia in the early 20th century\, their voyage echoing the journey of Wang Zhaojun\, one of the legendary Four Beauties of ancient China. Finding themselves on a cargo ship\, they are inescapably embroiled in sinister struggles for power as a mysterious man reveals secrets they have yet to understand. What will their destinies hold? What connection exists between these three women braving a tumultuous sea and Wang Zhaojun\, who rode beyond the borders of Western Han into the Xiongnu empire? Do the fragments of loss and sorrow in Nanyin music symbolise the life stories of these modern women\, or do they inspire courage to explore new horizons? \n  \nThis fusion of traditional Nanyin music and contemporary theatre will delight both Nanyin purists and new audiences. Siong Leng breaks new ground in this collaboration with celebrated Taiwanese playwright Katherine Hui-ling Chou and Taiwanese director Lee Yi Hsiu\, who is known for his innovative direction of traditional music performances. \nThe Heart of Jun: Memoirs of Zhaojun features authentic traditional Nanyin music harking back half a millennium that narrates the legend of Wang Zhaojun\, with additional music composed by Siong Leng’s music director Ng Kang Kee. The production showcases the principal artists of Siong Leng\, and a skilled ensemble of Eastern and Western classical musicians performing together with Singapore actors Ang Xiao Ting\, Jodi Chan and Hang Qian Chou.

SUMMARY:All The World’s A Sea 《一切世界海》
DESCRIPTION:Synopsis \nSeeking anchor in a world buffeted by unrest\, All The World’s A Sea presents the journeys of the uprooted and displaced — where despair and oppression sit alongside hope and resistance. \nA captured nose. A body in limbo. A transplanted tongue.\nAberrant eyes. Ears lost in translation. Consciousness gone rogue. \nWho am I? SUMMARY:SUARA / Oro Rua
DESCRIPTION:A work inspired by the power of the voice\, and what voices and our breath can bring into being\, with ‘suara’ meaning ‘voice/sound’ in Malay\, and ‘oro rua’ in Māori\, meaning ‘to resonate’. SUARA / Oro Rua imagines a distant\, post-anthropocentric future long after the world has gone silent…until the day our fossilised voices once again emerge\, their aural energies breaking through the ground like geothermal force. What worlds would those voices call into being? What might those voices declare\, lament\, or confess? The work brings the Māori concept of Te Kore\, the ‘void’ that exists beyond the world of everyday experience\, together with the sonic history of the Earth — which tells us how hundreds of millions of years of evolution and communication happened in silence before living creatures found their voices. Featuring original music composed and directed by Safuan Johari and performed by Singaporean musicians and vocalists\, with dance/movement choreographed by Eddie Elliott and performed by dancers from Aotearoa. SUARA / Oro Rua is commissioned by the Singapore International Festival of Arts\, and supported by Creative New Zealand Toi Aotearoa.

SUMMARY:Mari Kita Main Wayang
DESCRIPTION:Hijinks and humour abound in Mari Kita Main Wayang (Let’s Stage A Play)! \nThis play-within-a-play follows a group of Peranakans who come together to stage Empat Bini\, an ambitious script that is set within the illustrious walls of a royal court. However\, all is not as it seems—as the play unfolds\, a gripping narrative of power gone awry among the players comes to light. \nPresented in Baba Melayu and peppered with familiar expressions\, Mari Kita Main Wayang is a love letter to the rich Peranakan cultural heritage deeply rooted in Singapore. It pays homage to the under-appreciated art form of Peranakan theatre\, while highlighting the significance of having this heritage represented on stage. Witness the revival of this tradition and be transported to a bygone era where the past meets the present. \nFirst staged in 1994\, this adaptation of Felix Chia’s script is comedic\, unique and utterly captivating—look forward to witty banter\, dramatic storytelling and masterful performances by the cast!

SUMMARY:ANGEL ISLAND
DESCRIPTION:Between 1910 and 1940\, as new immigrants flowed through the immigration station on Angel Island in the San Francisco Bay\, Chinese immigrants faced massive discrimination because of America’s earliest racist immigration legislations. This captivating one-act music-theatre performance tells their stories. \nComposed by Huang Ruo\, the music of ANGEL ISLAND is inspired by the Chinese poems carved on the wooden walls of the detention centre on Angel Island\, and the events and stories emerging from the era in which the legislations were passed. Tackling perennial and global issues of xenophobia\, sexism\, and systematic racial and gender discrimination\, ANGEL ISLAND weaves a story of immigration\, discrimination\, and confinement – bringing history into the reality of our current lives. Performed by Del Sol Quartet and Taipei Chamber Singers.

SUMMARY:Spiral by Chok Kerong and Vanessa Fernandez (Singapore)
DESCRIPTION:Producer-composer Chok Kerong and singer-songwriter Vanessa Fernandez join forces for the first time as creative partners\, putting together the soulful and introspective genre-bending album\, Spiral. \nHaving spent the last two decades developing their individual careers independently of each other\, the duo decided that the time was right to collaborate\, leveraging each other’s sensibilities as songwriters and performers. The result is Spiral\, an eight-track album that serves as a meditation on life’s joys and sorrows. With its illuminative lyrics and seamless blend of hip-hop\, classic soul\, rock and gospel\, the record is a testament to their effortless chemistry. \nThis performance is a rare chance to see the Australia-based Vanessa Fernandez (also known to many as Vandetta) in action.
