SUMMARY:Objectifs Film Club: Tenebrae by Nicole Midori Woodford
DESCRIPTION:Objectifs Film Club: Tenebrae by Nicole Midori Woodford\nTue 21 Mar 2023\, 7.30pm to 8.30pm\nVenue: Objectifs Workshop Space \nFree admission\, please RSVP here. \nThe word ‘renewal’ is seldom distant from the collective Singaporean consciousness. Bringing to mind the age-old national narrative of constant progress and development\, where our skills and environment are forever subjected to upgrading\, the beginning of each new year also encloses the word within a more personal sphere as we contemplate changes to old habits and come up with new year resolutions. \nCome join us at our first Film Club session of the year\, which will feature a screening of Tenebrae by Nicole Midori Woodford. This will be followed by a conversation between the filmmaker herself and Singaporean poet\, Crispin Rodrigues\, who will be reading a poem in tandem with the screening. Besides looking at what is lost and gained when renewal takes place\, the discussion will also examine other pertinent questions drawn out by the film – like what\, for instance\, irrevocably leaves its mark\, and how moving images and poetry alike can capture both situational gravitas and the emotions that bubble beneath during processes of renewal. \nLearn about the film here.

SUMMARY:Soo Bin - Life of Art\, Art of Life
DESCRIPTION:Featuring the works of Chua Soo Bin\n15 Jan to 26 Mar 2023\nChapel Gallery\, Objectifs\n \nWanted! Photographer-at-Large (RSVP here)\nSat 4 Feb\, 2.30pm | Objectifs Chapel Gallery \nChua Soo Bin’s first exhibition in the post-pandemic period\, following his retrospective exhibition at the National Gallery Singapore (in 2019-2020) is presented in collaboration with Objectifs\, Singapore’s definitive centre for photography and film. \nThe exhibition is accompanied by a full-colour large-format publication of the same title; both exhibition and book commemorate the remarkable life and photographic practice of Cultural Medallion awardee Chua Soo Bin\, bringing to the fore his personal and professional experiences as well as life philosophies that have been honed through the years. \nSpecially curated for display in the Objectifs’ gallery space (a heritage building that was a former chapel built in 1872)\, the exhibition offers highlights from every significant phase of Soo Bin’s practice – with photographs of the 1950s and 60s when he was actively involved with salon photography; to the advertising and professional photographic campaigns of the 1970s-1980s in his ascent as one of Singapore’s award-winning photographers; his magnum opus (1984-88)\, the Legends suite of photographs of 14 Chinese ink masters including Singapore’s Dr. Chen Wen Hsi; his emergence as a gallerist-dealer of foresight and vision in the 1990s\, and his continuing creative work that includes photographs of Singapore artists Liu Kang\, Wu Tsai Yen\, Chua Ek Kay\, Chng Seok Tin and Lee Wen. \nThis solo exhibition presents aspects of Singapore’s exemplary ‘multi-hyphenate’ – in his roles as artist-photographer\, art entrepreneur\, art advisor\, patron and benefactor – offering glimpses into 90 years of an extraordinary life that has been bound up with and enriched by photography and art; and that shares Soo Bin’s precious philosophy of the art of joyful living.

SUMMARY:Bad Clocks: Alley Through a Pinhole
DESCRIPTION:Bad Clocks: Alley Through a Pinhole by DASSAD\, in collaboration with Victoria Hertel\, Neo Jialing\, Euginia Tan\n6 Jan to 4 Feb 2023\nObjectifs\, Lower Gallery \nFree admission \nPinhole Photography Workshop\, $75 (Register here)\nSat 14 Jan\, 10am – 1pm | Objectifs Workshop Space\n\nArtist Talk (Register here)\n28 Jan\, 3pm | Objectifs Workshop Space \nBad Clocks: Alley Through a Pinhole is a site-specific and immersive installation that introduces a camera obscura into the Lower Gallery of Objectifs. By creating a pinhole in a darkened room\, the environment surrounding the gallery projects back into its interiors\, blending indoor and outdoor spaces with light. \nBad Clocks is an ongoing concept explored by DASSAD to reconsider the ways we understand and define time. This iteration explores the perception of time within the camera obscura\, tracing back to the beginnings of photography. The camera obscura becomes a playground for interdisciplinary collaborations\, inspiring visual\, sound\, performance and installation-based works concerned about the passing of time. This exhibition is led by DASSAD\, in collaboration with installation artist\, Victoria Hertel\, movement artist\, Neo Jialing\, and writer\, Euginia Tan\, and with venue support from Objectifs.

SUMMARY:Sugar Pills for a Bitter World
DESCRIPTION:Sugar Pills for a Bitter World \nCurated by Daniel Chong with works by Desiree Tham\, Eng Kai Er\, Mike HJ Chang\, Ryan Lim Zi Yi and Yeyoon Avis\nRecipient of Curator Open Call 2022\nPresented by Objectifs Centre for Photography and Film \n“We live in an age of absurdity. Every new event is somehow more ridiculous than the last. Our financial systems constantly hang in the balance; we’re forever in a health crisis; even the concept of truth has changed. What a time to be alive. \nYet in this post-truth\, late-stage capitalist\, populist\, Anthropocene\, I’ve found sweet relief in a new brand of humour. This serotonin boost goes by many names: Gen-Z humour\, TikTok humour or Post-Dada irony. Often defined by its generational difference\, it is marked by its low video quality and unplanned randomness. However\, it is often misunderstood as mere attempts to laugh away the pain. In a generation that has dealt with the increasingly illogical nature of the world\, this brand of humour is not just a mere joke. In fact\, within its absurdity are honest attempts to make sense of the world. They have developed their own sugar pill – a placebo activated from belief. \nThis exhibition functions as a sampler – a conceptual pillbox. Containing the work of 5 artists\, each of them have developed their own sugar pills\, placebos to process and guide them through their times. They too are honest responses created in the vernacular chaos of our era\, synthesising works that sit between the poetic and the hilarious. \nTheir art is an incidental reflection. While not a direct response to the ailments plaguing our world today\, they are clearly of its time. Sugar pills do not inherently heal\, but through belief\, affect change. Similarly\, it is the artists’ earnest responses that have led the curation of this show. Selected for their commitment to their practices and their embrace of the absurd\, they have formed their own internal structures and logics – crystallisation of their pursuits. \nWith each practice comes its own brand of sugar pill\, and with each pill an acknowledgement of its size. A sugar pill is small. It pales in comparison to the monstrosity of the world. Yet\, this tiny pill\, with enough faith\, commitment and hope\, can help relieve even for a little while.” \n— Daniel Chong\, Curator \nPresented by Objectifs Centre for Photography and Film\nSupported by the Cultural Matching Fund \nExhibition Programme Schedule \nOpening: Thu 22 Sep\, 6pm – 9pm \nFormulating Sugar Pills for a Bitter World: A Discussion with Daniel Chong and Sam I-shan\nSat 24 Sept | 2-3pm\, at Objectifs Workshop Space (Register here) \nExhibition Activation: In other words – an off script gym\nSun 9 Oct\, 23 Oct\, and 6 Nov | 4-6pm\, at Objectifs Chapel Gallery (Register here) \nGuided Tour with Curator\nSat 15 Oct | 2-3pm\, at Objectifs Chapel Gallery (Register here) \nBa-Zi Reading by Desiree Tham\nSun 23 Oct | 1-5pm\, at Objectifs Lower Gallery (Register here) \nGuided Tour with Curator and Artists\nSun 30 Oct | 2-3pm\, at Objectifs Chapel Gallery (Register here)

SUMMARY:Memory is my Sixth Sense by Aparna Nori
DESCRIPTION:“In a world where there is a growing appreciation for all processes handcrafted and homespun\, the dark room yet again becomes a place of mystique and intrigue. Artists entering with a strong sense of conviction and direction about their work often emerge from its dark lairs laced with philosophical undertones that change the way they look at their own work. It is a necessary moulting of hardened ideas\, shedding of preconceived notions and tensions\, and the possibility of a new light to observe their work with. The dark room is a critical tool of this metamorphosis. \nHaving begun her practice in the analog era\, Aparna Nori begins her second and exciting tryst with the dark room on a completely different level. Not only has she turned to photographic processes that are much older (some one hundred and fifty years old) to play with\, but has consciously attempted to create new work and marry it with a process that lends itself to the expression of the story in the most meaningful way. \nWith her exhibition titled Memory is my Sixth Sense\, Aparna presents two bodies of work\, both created using the Salted Paper process. In “Nalla Pilla”\, the mosaic of her skin and its many folds that hang heavily with the burden of years of slow trauma seem fragile and translucent\, yet taut in its tenacity. If one lingers\, the mosaic turns into a quiet celebration of the diversity of the tones – not just of the medium\, but of her skin that held her together through those times. In the second work that shares the title of the exhibition\, the prints depicting the couplet of Rajnigandha flowers\, harbour in its visible brush strokes the many shades of emotions that are associated with the memories of her mother. The lines\, like tree rings – a visible testimony to the passage of time.” \nVivek Muthuramalingam\nLens based artist & Documentarian
