SUMMARY:Making Space: Objectifs Turns 20
DESCRIPTION:A gathering of moments across the past 20 years of Objectifs\n16 Nov to 16 Dec 2023\nChapel Gallery\, Objectifs\nTues to Sat\, 12pm to 7pm / Sun\, 12pm to 4pm\nFree admission \nThis exhibition is held in conjunction with Objectifs’ 20th anniversary fundraising campaign. Click here to find out more. \nMaking Space is a gathering of moments across the past 20 years of Objectifs. The showcase charts our evolution in size and spirit\, reflecting on the ways we have grown in community and verve\, and how we have been shaped by the unique conditions of the Singapore arts scene and wider trends. As an independent visual arts centre focused on photography and film\, Objectifs has made room for image-based art to traverse boundaries of form and function\, while encouraging conversations about the manifold ways in which stories\, issues\, and artistic expression can bring us together. \nIn marking our 20th anniversary\, we pay homage to the people and events that have made Objectifs possible. It is a tribute to the past and a celebration of the present\, in anticipation of the future. It is an attempt to learn together\, connect with each other\, and enable more inclusive and diverse ways of telling stories and building communities through the power of the image.

SUMMARY:Dancing on Paper
DESCRIPTION:Dancing on Paper by Jane Goh is an exploration of abstract nude female drawings rendered in the mediums of Chinese ink\, crayons and acrylic. This exhibition invites you to embark on a journey into the boundless realm of femininity\, where form meets abstraction and lines converge to celebrate the sheer beauty of the female body. \nHer works captivate with their delicate dance between abstraction and representation. With each stroke\, the artist evokes a symphony of emotions\, echoing the complexity and diversity of womanhood. \nThis is a fundraiser exhibition. All proceeds will go towards the Objectifs’ 20th Anniversary Fundraiser. \nAbout the Artist \nJane Goh (b. 1947) embarked on her artistic journey at 50\, when she took up a part time figure drawing course at LASALLE College of the Arts under the guidance of Mr. Sawn Huang\, an abstract art enthusiast. Her passion for drawing grew as she continued to draw weekly with her peers at Substation. This lasted for 2 years and they named themselves the ‘Mark-makers’ group whereby they organised group exhibitions\, selling their works to raise funds for different charities. Jane then learnt to paint with watercolour for 1 year at Tanjong Pagar Community Centre. Since 2018\, she has been painting regularly with a group of great friends\, which included professional artists and enthusiasts\, at her office on alternate Saturday mornings to horn her craft. \nInspired by her friend\, Wai Fong\, she developed a unique style of painting\, blending abstraction and distortion. Jane’s art is a therapeutic exploration of flow\, gesture\, and freedom\, appreciating the creative endurance of her models.

SUMMARY:Being with Water
DESCRIPTION:Being with Water By Ng Hui Hsien \n11 Jul – 6 Aug 2023\nLower Gallery\, Objectifs\nFree admission \nBeing with Water is a photographic work that explores the interconnectedness between our interior worlds and the elemental. It features unique silver gelatin prints suggestive of landscapes\, dusk\, and dawn\, visually alluding to renewal and transformation\, beginnings and endings\, hope and loss – universal experiences as we navigate life. \nTo create these prints\, the artist bypasses the camera and works directly and primarily with water\, light\, and photographic materials. For her\, this hands-on analogue process is her attempt to better understand – and learn from – the characteristics of natural elements\, especially water. In a way hence\, Being with Water also invites us to see ourselves and draw lessons from the natural world around us. \nRelated events:\nAs Water Dances Through Us: Soundscape Meditation by Jean Reiki\nSession 1: Fri 21 Jul\, 7.30pm – 8.30pm / Session 2: Sat 22 Jul\, 3.30pm – 4.30pm\nVenue: Lower Gallery\, Objectifs / Admission: $15\nPlease register here \nA Conversation with Ng Hui Hsien and Marc Glöde\nFri 28 Jul\, 7.30pm – 8.30pm \nWorkshop Space\, Objectifs / Free admission\nPlease register here \nLumen Printing Workshop with Ng Hui Hsien\nSat 29 Jul\, 2.30pm – 4.30pm\nVenue: Workshop Space\, Objectifs\nWorkshop Fee: $90\nPlease register here \n\n  \n\nAbout the artist \nNg Hui Hsien uses photography as a medium to explore themes such as (im)materiality and interconnectivity. She seeks to create work that holds the possibility of connection and clarity. Or a quiet counterbalance against dominating logics of instrumental rationality\, incessant productivity\, and linear\, clockwork time. \nIn recent years\, Hui Hsien has been concerned with depicting nature and interior states through alternative processes. Her work has been internationally exhibited in institutions\, including Reykjavík Museum of Photography (Iceland). She graduated from the University of West of England (UWE) with a MA in Photography (Distinction). \n\nSupported by:\nNational Arts Council\nObjectifs – Centre for Photography & Film

SUMMARY:A Piece of Home
DESCRIPTION:How can we encourage more to look at the world with fresh eyes\, unencumbered by the norms and standards of society? Perhaps start at A Piece Of Home\, a group exhibition featuring 26 young persons with disabilities (PwDs). Organised by ART:DIS and curated by award-winning exhibition-maker John Tung\, the comprehensive showcase of over 60 artworks across paintings\, prints & ceramics invites viewers to perceive the world differently. \n“Home is a complex concept that shapes our identity and sense of belonging\, and for these artists\, this concept can be especially nuanced and layered. Working outside of traditional art institutions and conventions\, their experiences and personal interests have shaped the artworks on display. At A Piece of Home\, I encourage viewers to consider the ways in which art transcends limitations as this exhibition offers a rare moment of authenticity that is seldom encountered in the art world today\,” said John in his curatorial statement.  \nThis exhibition is a highlight of ART:DIS’s 30th anniversary celebration and a cumulation of a year of artist-in-training programme in the Fine Arts and Ceramics faculty.  Held at Objectifs\, an arts space nestled amongst many art institutions\, we hope to raise the visibility artists with disabilities\, expose them to professional art spaces and invite others into their world where art is a sanctuary. Let their creations ignite your imagination and remind you of the power of finding solace in familiar spaces. \nAccompanying this exhibition is a range of public programmes facilitated by artists with disabilities. Share in their joy of creating art and expressing yourself through a variety of mediums. Sign-up here as spaces are limited: bit.ly/APieceOfHome_Register

SUMMARY:Ang Palaboy at Ang Tatlong Krus by Jomar Tingson (the Philippines)
DESCRIPTION:A project by Jomar Tingson (the Philippines)\nRecipient of the Objectifs Documentary Award 2022\, Emerging Category\nMentored by Muhammad Fadli \nCourtyard Space\, Objectifs\n31 Mar to 7 May 2023\nFree admission \nExhibition Opening: 30 Mar 2023\, 12pm – 9pm \nArtist Talk with Jomar Tingson and Muhammad Fadli | 1 Apr 2023\, 4.30pm – 5.30pm \nRSVP here: docuaward-palaboy.peatix.com \nSince April 2022\, photographer Jomar Tingson has been photographing communities in Paete\, Laguna\, in the Philippines. Initially drawn to the performances of The Centurion Original\, a local theatre group that performs the dramatization of the Passion of Christ each year during Holy Week\, Tingson soon began expanding the scope of his project to include wider aspects of the town’s spiritual and religious beliefs. \nPaete is derived from paet\, the Tagalog name for chisel\, which points to the town’s reputation as the woodcarving capital of the Philippines. Catholic wooden statues from Paete grace churches and museums across the country\, a testament to the skill of its craftsmen\, and the town’s devotion to spirituality and religion. Expressions of faith in Paete frequently meld local folklore with Catholicism; these practices are reflective of the complex histories\, identities and cultures that influence the often syncretic nature of religiosity across the country. \nTingson’s exploration of the tension between modernity and tradition\, colonialism and native identity\, speak to his own journey in coming to terms with family lore\, personal histories and identity. It is an exercise of faith and curiosity; a reconciliation of past and present\, wonder and devotion.

SUMMARY:Rise by Irene Barlian (Indonesia)
DESCRIPTION:Featuring works by Irene Barlian (Indonesia)\nRecipient of the Objectifs Documentary Award 2022\, Open Category\nCurated by Siddharta Perez \nChapel Gallery\, Objectifs\n31 Mar to 7 May 2023\nFree admission \nExhibition Opening: 30 Mar 2023\, 12pm – 9pm \nArtist Talk with Irene Barlian and Siddharta Perez | 1 Apr 2023\, 3pm – 4pm \nRSVP here: docuaward-rise.peatix.com \nRise by Indonesian photographer Irene Barlian is a developing body of stories about communities seized by the escalating flooding crisis in Java. As Irene’s first solo art exhibition\, Rise harks to her ongoing advocacy towards inclusive and sustainable environmentalism as expressed in her project “Land of the Sea.” In Rise: a Land of the Sea project\, these images immerse in the axis of human agency and the broader issues of the climate crisis and all other infrastructural recourse that besiege villages in Pekalongan and Cirebon. Between these images\, environments imprint on bodies (human and architecture) as registered in the estrangement of people from their homes and their adapting livelihoods. Irene Barlian started materialising her engagements with families affected by flooding in 2019. She sustains the documentation of their eroding homesteads\, volatile subsistence and social ecologies until this recent iteration of “Land of the Sea.”

SUMMARY:Objectifs Film Club: Tenebrae by Nicole Midori Woodford
DESCRIPTION:Objectifs Film Club: Tenebrae by Nicole Midori Woodford\nTue 21 Mar 2023\, 7.30pm to 8.30pm\nVenue: Objectifs Workshop Space \nFree admission\, please RSVP here. \nThe word ‘renewal’ is seldom distant from the collective Singaporean consciousness. Bringing to mind the age-old national narrative of constant progress and development\, where our skills and environment are forever subjected to upgrading\, the beginning of each new year also encloses the word within a more personal sphere as we contemplate changes to old habits and come up with new year resolutions. \nCome join us at our first Film Club session of the year\, which will feature a screening of Tenebrae by Nicole Midori Woodford. This will be followed by a conversation between the filmmaker herself and Singaporean poet\, Crispin Rodrigues\, who will be reading a poem in tandem with the screening. Besides looking at what is lost and gained when renewal takes place\, the discussion will also examine other pertinent questions drawn out by the film – like what\, for instance\, irrevocably leaves its mark\, and how moving images and poetry alike can capture both situational gravitas and the emotions that bubble beneath during processes of renewal. \nLearn about the film here.

SUMMARY:Soo Bin - Life of Art\, Art of Life
DESCRIPTION:Featuring the works of Chua Soo Bin\n15 Jan to 26 Mar 2023\nChapel Gallery\, Objectifs\n \nWanted! Photographer-at-Large (RSVP here)\nSat 4 Feb\, 2.30pm | Objectifs Chapel Gallery \nChua Soo Bin’s first exhibition in the post-pandemic period\, following his retrospective exhibition at the National Gallery Singapore (in 2019-2020) is presented in collaboration with Objectifs\, Singapore’s definitive centre for photography and film. \nThe exhibition is accompanied by a full-colour large-format publication of the same title; both exhibition and book commemorate the remarkable life and photographic practice of Cultural Medallion awardee Chua Soo Bin\, bringing to the fore his personal and professional experiences as well as life philosophies that have been honed through the years. \nSpecially curated for display in the Objectifs’ gallery space (a heritage building that was a former chapel built in 1872)\, the exhibition offers highlights from every significant phase of Soo Bin’s practice – with photographs of the 1950s and 60s when he was actively involved with salon photography; to the advertising and professional photographic campaigns of the 1970s-1980s in his ascent as one of Singapore’s award-winning photographers; his magnum opus (1984-88)\, the Legends suite of photographs of 14 Chinese ink masters including Singapore’s Dr. Chen Wen Hsi; his emergence as a gallerist-dealer of foresight and vision in the 1990s\, and his continuing creative work that includes photographs of Singapore artists Liu Kang\, Wu Tsai Yen\, Chua Ek Kay\, Chng Seok Tin and Lee Wen. \nThis solo exhibition presents aspects of Singapore’s exemplary ‘multi-hyphenate’ – in his roles as artist-photographer\, art entrepreneur\, art advisor\, patron and benefactor – offering glimpses into 90 years of an extraordinary life that has been bound up with and enriched by photography and art; and that shares Soo Bin’s precious philosophy of the art of joyful living.

SUMMARY:Bad Clocks: Alley Through a Pinhole
DESCRIPTION:Bad Clocks: Alley Through a Pinhole by DASSAD\, in collaboration with Victoria Hertel\, Neo Jialing\, Euginia Tan\n6 Jan to 4 Feb 2023\nObjectifs\, Lower Gallery \nFree admission \nPinhole Photography Workshop\, $75 (Register here)\nSat 14 Jan\, 10am – 1pm | Objectifs Workshop Space\n\nArtist Talk (Register here)\n28 Jan\, 3pm | Objectifs Workshop Space \nBad Clocks: Alley Through a Pinhole is a site-specific and immersive installation that introduces a camera obscura into the Lower Gallery of Objectifs. By creating a pinhole in a darkened room\, the environment surrounding the gallery projects back into its interiors\, blending indoor and outdoor spaces with light. \nBad Clocks is an ongoing concept explored by DASSAD to reconsider the ways we understand and define time. This iteration explores the perception of time within the camera obscura\, tracing back to the beginnings of photography. The camera obscura becomes a playground for interdisciplinary collaborations\, inspiring visual\, sound\, performance and installation-based works concerned about the passing of time. This exhibition is led by DASSAD\, in collaboration with installation artist\, Victoria Hertel\, movement artist\, Neo Jialing\, and writer\, Euginia Tan\, and with venue support from Objectifs.

SUMMARY:Sugar Pills for a Bitter World
DESCRIPTION:Sugar Pills for a Bitter World \nCurated by Daniel Chong with works by Desiree Tham\, Eng Kai Er\, Mike HJ Chang\, Ryan Lim Zi Yi and Yeyoon Avis\nRecipient of Curator Open Call 2022\nPresented by Objectifs Centre for Photography and Film \n“We live in an age of absurdity. Every new event is somehow more ridiculous than the last. Our financial systems constantly hang in the balance; we’re forever in a health crisis; even the concept of truth has changed. What a time to be alive. \nYet in this post-truth\, late-stage capitalist\, populist\, Anthropocene\, I’ve found sweet relief in a new brand of humour. This serotonin boost goes by many names: Gen-Z humour\, TikTok humour or Post-Dada irony. Often defined by its generational difference\, it is marked by its low video quality and unplanned randomness. However\, it is often misunderstood as mere attempts to laugh away the pain. In a generation that has dealt with the increasingly illogical nature of the world\, this brand of humour is not just a mere joke. In fact\, within its absurdity are honest attempts to make sense of the world. They have developed their own sugar pill – a placebo activated from belief. \nThis exhibition functions as a sampler – a conceptual pillbox. Containing the work of 5 artists\, each of them have developed their own sugar pills\, placebos to process and guide them through their times. They too are honest responses created in the vernacular chaos of our era\, synthesising works that sit between the poetic and the hilarious. \nTheir art is an incidental reflection. While not a direct response to the ailments plaguing our world today\, they are clearly of its time. Sugar pills do not inherently heal\, but through belief\, affect change. Similarly\, it is the artists’ earnest responses that have led the curation of this show. Selected for their commitment to their practices and their embrace of the absurd\, they have formed their own internal structures and logics – crystallisation of their pursuits. \nWith each practice comes its own brand of sugar pill\, and with each pill an acknowledgement of its size. A sugar pill is small. It pales in comparison to the monstrosity of the world. Yet\, this tiny pill\, with enough faith\, commitment and hope\, can help relieve even for a little while.” \n— Daniel Chong\, Curator \nPresented by Objectifs Centre for Photography and Film\nSupported by the Cultural Matching Fund \nExhibition Programme Schedule \nOpening: Thu 22 Sep\, 6pm – 9pm \nFormulating Sugar Pills for a Bitter World: A Discussion with Daniel Chong and Sam I-shan\nSat 24 Sept | 2-3pm\, at Objectifs Workshop Space (Register here) \nExhibition Activation: In other words – an off script gym\nSun 9 Oct\, 23 Oct\, and 6 Nov | 4-6pm\, at Objectifs Chapel Gallery (Register here) \nGuided Tour with Curator\nSat 15 Oct | 2-3pm\, at Objectifs Chapel Gallery (Register here) \nBa-Zi Reading by Desiree Tham\nSun 23 Oct | 1-5pm\, at Objectifs Lower Gallery (Register here) \nGuided Tour with Curator and Artists\nSun 30 Oct | 2-3pm\, at Objectifs Chapel Gallery (Register here)

SUMMARY:Memory is my Sixth Sense by Aparna Nori
DESCRIPTION:“In a world where there is a growing appreciation for all processes handcrafted and homespun\, the dark room yet again becomes a place of mystique and intrigue. Artists entering with a strong sense of conviction and direction about their work often emerge from its dark lairs laced with philosophical undertones that change the way they look at their own work. It is a necessary moulting of hardened ideas\, shedding of preconceived notions and tensions\, and the possibility of a new light to observe their work with. The dark room is a critical tool of this metamorphosis. \nHaving begun her practice in the analog era\, Aparna Nori begins her second and exciting tryst with the dark room on a completely different level. Not only has she turned to photographic processes that are much older (some one hundred and fifty years old) to play with\, but has consciously attempted to create new work and marry it with a process that lends itself to the expression of the story in the most meaningful way. \nWith her exhibition titled Memory is my Sixth Sense\, Aparna presents two bodies of work\, both created using the Salted Paper process. In “Nalla Pilla”\, the mosaic of her skin and its many folds that hang heavily with the burden of years of slow trauma seem fragile and translucent\, yet taut in its tenacity. If one lingers\, the mosaic turns into a quiet celebration of the diversity of the tones – not just of the medium\, but of her skin that held her together through those times. In the second work that shares the title of the exhibition\, the prints depicting the couplet of Rajnigandha flowers\, harbour in its visible brush strokes the many shades of emotions that are associated with the memories of her mother. The lines\, like tree rings – a visible testimony to the passage of time.” \nVivek Muthuramalingam\nLens based artist & Documentarian
