Through a combination of compelling visual narratives and a striking sculpture that was commissioned for this exhibition\, the exhibition aims to foster a deeper understanding and empathy towards the plight of these often overlooked animals. This exhibition is not merely a visual experience but a call to action. DESCRIPTION:Interested in making your own short film but stuck on how to start? Are you curious about all the exciting new features of your smartphone and how it can be used to make visually compelling stories? Smartphone Filmmaking is the perfect introduction to filmmaking for first-time filmmakers! Participants will learn pre-production skills (i.e. how to storyboard\, come up with a script\, cinematography techniques\, lighting and sound knowledge)\, engage in film production (i.e. how to cast\, direct\, and do production management)\, and post-production (i.e. film editing). \nThe workshop includes on-location\, hands-on camera work and consultation as participants work together in teams to complete individual short films. No fancy gear needed! \nIt is highly recommended that participants use their own mobile phones in this class. \nWorkshop Fee\n$875.00 \nThis workshop is eligible for use of SkillsFuture Credit. \nPlease note:\nThis is a very hands-on workshop. Each piece reflects her intuitive understanding and meticulous attention to detail\, inviting viewers to appreciate nature’s complexity and the joy of creative expression. Wong’s art embodies the harmony and interconnectedness of all living things. \nAbout ART:DIS \nART:DIS exists to serve and create opportunities for persons with disabilities in the arts. Since its invention\, karaoke has evolved into a cultural and popular phenomenon\, specifically in Asian countries like Japan\, Hong Kong\, Philippines\, and Vietnam. In these lands\, singing takes various forms and is carried out in locations such as bars\, KTVs\, homes\, cafes\, weddings\, and funerals. The communal act is not only entertaining and fun\, it can also provide a sense of comfort and familiarity. \nExploring the social impact of this beloved activity\, Karaoke! Playing the ♯ and ♭ presents short films where realities\, dreams\, and fears converge with the act of singing. It intends to combine: \n\nthe magic of hearing an artist or bookmaker share about their process\, and\nthe luxury of time and comfort when reading in a library.\n\nAn art book is a curious object—it’s an artwork you can touch and carry around. It can have pictures and texts\, or many pictures and no text\, or even texts and no pictures. \nArt books afford a private space and mode of encounter that can be revisited freely and repeatedly. While I love the conversations surrounding books and their makers at an art fair\, it’s an awfully extroverted endeavour. [collected on paper] offers a chance to explore different art books and the creators’ thoughts in an intimate setting\, with notes on their processes and materials.” \nMODE \nA selection of books will be presented alongside a book club under a particular idea on each occasion. The showcase is held within an existing art book library\, allowing the books to be encountered in the context of other art books. \nThe first occasion will reflect on the idea of time capsules. On this occasion\, the books selected for discussions related to time capsules contain images that share certain qualities with the capsules themselves: \n\nmost of the images in these books were not originally intended to become part of a book.\nthese images\, like most in books\, gain additional readings over time\, but they also become irreplicable\, as the shift in time directly impacts their context.\n\n[collected on paper] is co-programmed by Hong Shu-ying and Objectifs Centre for Photography and Film. \n\nOccasion #1: Time Capsules  \nA time capsule is a container where things are well-kept and protected from the elements. I’ve always found it fascinating that everyday objects can become archived and emblematic of their era once they are placed in a time capsule. These items aren’t necessarily exclusive or rare but serve as a snapshot of what the capsule’s creator valued at that moment. The very existence of a time capsule implies that care and resources have been dedicated to preserving these objects. \nOn this occasion\, the books selected for discussions related to time capsules contain images that share certain qualities with the capsules themselves: \n\nmost of the images in these books were not originally intended to become part of a book.\nthese images\, like most in books\, gain additional readings over time\, but they also become irreplicable\, as the shift in time directly impacts their context.\n\nBooks Featured 📚📚📚 \n\nAparna Nori – 24 Slides\nGeorge Wong – Wallet\nLai Yu Tong – Things I Bought\, Things I Threw Away\, Things I Ate\, Things I Saw\, Things I Made\, and Other Things (For Future Reference)\nLou / Atelier HOKO – Spider & Man\n\n\nAbout Hong Shu-ying \nHong Shu-ying 方舒颖 is an artist who collects and works with found images and materials. She recontextualises familiar sights and sounds to highlight patterns\, repetitions\, and contradictions related to inheritance and ways of learning. \nHer recent projects delve into informal archives\, which act like personal and communal time capsules that encapsulate the banalities and peculiarities of life. These include handwritten elements found in scores and annotations\, alongside amateur videos and images. This fascination is informed by her experiences growing up in amateur Chinese orchestras and the internet. \nShu holds a BFA (Hons) in Media Art (Photography) from Nanyang Technological University\, School of Art\, Design\, and Media. She was awarded the Kwek Leng Joo Prize of Excellence in Photography and featured in the 6th Women in Film and Photography Showcase by Objectifs (Singapore). Recently\, she had her first solo presentation at Esplanade (Singapore) as part of the Singapore Art Week 2024. She has participated in exhibitions\, showcases\, and festivals internationally\, including in Austria\, Cambodia\, China\, Germany\, Indonesia\, Italy\, Malaysia\, the Netherlands\, South Korea\, Taiwan\, and Thailand.

DESCRIPTION:Celebrated on the 15th day of the 8th month in the Chinese calendar\, the Mid-Autumn Festival – otherwise also known as Moon Festival or Mooncake Festival – is a joyous occasion to go on night walks with lanterns\, and to eat mooncakes with friends and family under a full moon. \nLet your child fully immerse in the celebrations this year with our Cyanotype Lantern Making Workshop\, which will ensure an unforgettable Mid-Autumn Festival for them! \nThrough this workshop\, your child will: \na) Showcase their creativity by making their own unique lanterns! They will learn how to expose and develop their own prints using cyanotype — a UV light-sensitive photo printing process which creates beautiful blue prints. In this workshop\, your kids will make creative use of everyday objects and found materials to express themselves. \nb) Develop a greater appreciation for one of the most celebrated festivals in Singapore. SUMMARY:[Open Call] Young Photographers’ Mentorship Programme 2024
DESCRIPTION:Apply by Mon 30 Sep 2024 (2359H) \nThe Young Photographers’ Mentorship Programme (YPMP) aims to develop the artistic voice and ambitions of young photographers. This three-week long mentorship programme encourages them to explore and experiment with image-based work\, and deepen their understanding of the creative and professional possibilities in photography. The programme was formerly known as the Shooting Home Youth Awards. \nParticipants will have the opportunity to learn from some of the region’s foremost visual storytellers as mentors and guest lecturers. Topics covered include how to develop a personal photographic practice\, professional and ethical considerations\, and exhibition making. They will work towards completing one photo project\, which will be presented at Objectifs in the form of an open studio at the end of the programme. \nYPMP is open to Singapore-based photographers aged 15 to 23 years old. \nOnly 12 participants will be selected for this programme. DESCRIPTION:Are you interested in creating different narratives by selecting\, sequencing\, and juxtaposing photographs? Are you curious about the thought process behind the selection and layout of photographs for an editorial spread\, a photo book\, and/or an exhibition? \nThrough short lectures and hands-on practice\, this four-session workshop is ideal for participants who are interested to acquire the aforementioned skills to express themselves and tell stories through photographs. In this workshop\, participants will learn the basics of the five-picture edit and be guided to deconstruct the template according to their needs. \nIf you have an existing body of work\, you could use the workshop as a starting point for crafting a photographic narrative that aligns with a certain presentation mode (e.g. photo book\, exhibition etc.). From farming green tea to researching sea salt\, practising photography has provided her with a way of reconciling the paradoxical feelings of discomfort and joy while exploring her new home. This creative outlet became especially poignant during a time when borders in Japan were closed and there were numerous insecurities about the future. \nEach photograph chosen represents a specific moment of beauty and longing for Ryhan. When being in the present also alludes to a well grieved past\, this yearning for harmony between nostalgia and the allure of new memories is the fabric of her unapologetically human behaviour. \nShot primarily on film\, each photograph is accompanied by Ryhan’s honest thoughts on tackling the harsh realities that came with making her dreams a reality. Trying to bridge the disconnect between the person she was when she left Singapore\, and who she is now. \nRyhan has since also collaborated with two other artists\, DaybyDae and MZA\, in an attempt to make the rootlessness\, tangible. Through the medium of pottery and music\, both collaborators were given the freedom to interpret the photographs in their own voice. \n\nRyhan M.Y.\nFull-time farmer\, part-time photographer; the quiet of the countryside is where Ryhan finds her loudest bursts of creativity. Day in\, day out\, the continuous routine of the fields have trained her attention for detail and tenacity to seek out the beauty in small daily rituals. Shooting on both digital and film\, she hopes to capture these delicate intricacies for others to appreciate. \nDaybyDae \nA Singapore-based potter\, Daesiree creates functional tableware using wheel throwing and hand building techniques. Her work explores the inherent elegance of form and function\, where nature serves as a guiding muse. Her passion for pottery blossomed in 2019 and since then\, she has been honing her skills in creating functional ceramics that bridges the gap between everyday objects and artistic expressions. Motherhood adds another dimension to her work\, where she finds inspiration in the joy of everyday living. Whether crafting unique cups to elegant serving platters\, she strives to infuse each piece with a sense of beauty and functionality. \nMZA\nA mixed Japanese-Singaporean DJ/producer\, based in Singapore. MZA creates music inspired by jazz\, hip hop and dance culture. Often using a mixture of drum machines\, electronic synthesisers and traditional folk instruments from the East and Southeast Asian region.

Today\, the suburb contains multiple facsimiles of Vietnam in its community practices and environment – references to and longing for a home country that many first-generation immigrants continue to hold close to their hearts. In documenting the suburb\, Phương Nguyên Lê addresses notions of diaspora\, national identity and longing. \n— \nMangaramoti Tano Ni Ompung (To Bless the Mother’s Land)\nFeaturing works by Kaleb Sitompul (Indonesia)\nRecipient of the Objectifs Documentary Award 2023\, Emerging Category\nMentored by Ng Swan Ti \nLower Gallery 1\, Objectifs \nOpening | 18 May 2024\, 12pm – 7pm\nArtist Talk with Kaleb Sitompul and Ng Swan Ti | 18 May 2024\, 1pm – 2pm (Register here) \nThe Opung Raja Nasomalomarhohos Pasaribu (Natinggir Forest Indigenous Community) is a Batak tribe that has resided in the highlands of Toba in North Sumatra\, Indonesia\, for over 300 years. They are one of the area’s oldest indigenous residents. The tribe has a deep spiritual and emotional connection to the land from years of living in and managing the forest\, with the frankincense tree occupying a special place in their folklore and beliefs. Aside for using the land for farming and gathering\, they harvest the fragrant resin of frankincense trees\, a practice that has been in place for generations. \nThe tribe’s ancestral lands have slowly been encroached upon by eucalyptus plantations established by a major company that pulps eucalyptus trees for industrial purposes. These plantations have turned a vibrant ecosystem into a monoculture; the frankincense trees that used to grow plentifully are disappearing and the land has been left bereft\, threatening the tribe’s traditional livelihoods and practices. \nAbout the Objectifs Documentary Award\nThe Objectifs Documentary Award champions Objectifs’ mission to broaden perspectives through image making\, by supporting original voices in visual storytelling in Singapore and the wider region. DESCRIPTION:An exhibition by Mark Chua and Lam Li Shuen \n4 to 28 Apr 2024\nObjectifs Lower Gallery 2 \nOpening: Thu 4 Apr 2024\, 7pm – 9pm\nFree admission \nRelated events\nAnalog Filmmaking: The Basics and Experimentations (Please register here)\nDate & Time: Sat 27 Apr\, 2pm – 6pm\nLocation: Objectifs Workshop Space\nFee: $80 (General admission) | $50 (participants aged 35 and under)\nThis workshop is supported by the National Youth Fund (NYF). \nSilhouettes of Having Been is an exhibition by Mark Chua and Lam Li Shuen\, devised as a response to the site of Objectifs Centre for Photography and Film. Focusing on fallen hair strands as a central material\, it is a reflection and turning of attention toward physical presences and the possibilities in being together between time and images. The invisible becomes visible and the minute becomes magnificent as teeming lines are silhouetted against light. \nOver a period of time\, fallen hair strands by people passing through Objectifs were collected. The hair strands were adhered to film loops running through 16mm and Super 8 projectors\, in a live expanded cinema performance taking place before the exhibition. This was done alongside live modifications of the performed film with ink and lenticular interventions\, in combination with an improvisational soundscape with the film loops prepared as percussive elements. As a result\, the film loops were physically altered by the live process\, creating a unique\, unrepeatable moving image piece that forms the core of the exhibition. \nIn the exhibition\, Chua and Lam wish to invite an encounter with the materiality and speculative fictions of fallen hair as a bodily response which silently traces our existences. What do they say and express\, these silhouettes of having been? \nAbout Mark Chua and Lam Li Shuen \nMark Chua and Lam Li Shuen are a Singaporean filmmaker and artist duo. Their films explore existential anxiety\, alienation\, and histories\, often using surrealistic imagery\, bizarre narratives\, and body horror as social commentary. \nTheir films have screened at international film festivals\, including the International Film Festival Rotterdam (2023)\, New Directors/New Films (2023)\, and BFI London Film Festival (2021). In 2021\, they were awarded Best Southeast Asian Director at the Singapore International Film Festival for their short film A Man Trembles. Their short film\, The Cup also received the First Prize (Moving Images) of the Julius Baer Next Generation Art Prize in 2021. \nThey are currently developing their upcoming feature film The Want\, which was selected to participate in Berlinale Talents Script Station 2024\, mylab+@Jogja 2023 and Talents Tokyo 2023.

DESCRIPTION:Visually document and juxtapose different sights of Singaporean ‘heritage’ in this photowalk that will wind through Tanglin Halt and Wessex Estate. \nDuration\n2h over 1 session \nCourse Description\nOnce the living quarters of British servicemen from the 1930s to the 1970s\, Wessex Estate still boasts of a unique and idyllic charm that is hard to find elsewhere in Singapore. Lined with black-and-white colonial apartment blocks that are situated next to sprawling fields with their strategically planted trees\, the serene estate not only harkens to the country’s colonial past\, but also the troops’ attempts to transform a piece of Singapore into a place reminiscent of home. \nThis purposefully-crafted route will first take participants through the quickly transforming Tanglin Halt heartlands and parts of the Rail Corridor before arriving at Wessex Estate. If this population made up a country\, it would be the 15th largest on the planet. \nThis is one of the foremost challenges facing society in the 21st Century. Economic and political instability\, human caused climate change and the interconnectedness of the modern world are all key drivers of migration. Refugees are among the most vulnerable\, migrating because they have little or no choice but to do so. \nThe large and growing community of refugees and other displaced people is spread widely around the globe. “Threads” features photographs taken in over 20 countries\, focusing on the people impacted by these systemic drivers of the refugee crisis\, emphasizing our shared humanity with those who find themselves in very difficult circumstances. \nAbout the Artist \nAlexander Treves has photographed refugees and other displaced people in over 20 countries.  He aims to use photography not just to document issues that he cares about\, but also to raise awareness and money to assist with the underlying problems. Proceeds from sales of his books “Glimpses Over The Edge” and “Freefall” benefit refugee charities.  He is the recipient of the second prize in the Hong Kong Human Rights Arts Prize\, 2021. He is employed as a finance professional.

DESCRIPTION:Recipient of the Curator Open Call 2023\nCurated by Goh Chun Aik with works by Lewis Choo\, Ge Xiaocong\, Goh Chun Aik\, Hong Shu-ying\, and Ivan Ong\nPresented by Objectifs \nRecipient of Curator Open Call \n21 Jan – 4 Mar 2024\nChapel Gallery\, Objectifs\nOpening: 20 Jan 2024\, 5pm  \nTime as we understand is a concept that helps us comprehend the world\, with reference to a sequence of events through past\, present\, and future. The notion of timestream draws upon the parallels between our perception of ‘time’ and the nature of a ‘stream’ – both continually moving forward and never stops.\nWhat if there is a space where this stream flows into and accumulates into a reservoir? A reservoir of time. A space with tributaries from across different points of the timestream flowing in at different rates\, where the past\, present\, and future exist simultaneously. \nManifested as a site that exists across the continuum of time\, artists Lewis Choo\, Ge Xiaocong\, Goh Chun Aik\, Hong Shu-ying\, and Ivan Ong bring together their individual understanding of time through their artworks – seemingly each representing a different tributary – creating encounters that strive to influence our experience of time. The images and objects presented suggest a collection of memories\, traces of activity\, possibilities from across the time-space and even alternative timelines; resulting in an overlapping of timelines that prompts us to re-examine our perception of time. \nConceptualised as an exploration into our relationship with time through an artistic lens\, the exhibition and its artworks strive to offer opportunities for us to consider alternative ways of thinking about time.

Local community groups\, professionals\, and artists with interest in sustainability\, nature and ecology are invited to take part in different activities\, panel talks\, booths and symposiums\, rallying communities and the public for awareness\, fun and participation. Programmes include the Renew Earth Sweat Shop Workshop\, a Stone Soup Party\, Eco-Karaoke night\, Eco-Singles Night\, Water & Sustainability Symposiums\, and the Singapore Really Really Free Market\, etc. Alternative Ecology: The Community offers creative interpretations of the profound environmental challenges that we face today\, and\, at the same time\, explores the parallel role of an artist in acting as a catalyst for fostering community collaboration and promoting awareness through creative interpretations and discussions.
