SUMMARY:Open Call: Objectifs X Momo Film Co Short Film Incubator 2025
DESCRIPTION:The Objectifs x Momo Short Film Incubator is an initiative that focuses on developing short film scripts. The programme is open to Southeast Asian filmmakers working with moving images\, and will provide five selected participants with mentorship and a valuable support network as they work on their scripts. \nThe Objectifs x Momo Film Co Short Film Incubator will run from 2 June – 19 July 2025. This year’s incubator will take place with a hybrid format\, with weeks 1 to 5 conducted online\, and the sessions from 17 to 20 July will be conducted in person at Objectifs. SUMMARY:Storytelling Through Photography Course
DESCRIPTION:Photography has the power to capture moments in time\, document events\, and record our experiences. How can we move beyond strong single images and start to tell compelling visual stories? \nIn this workshop\, participants begin by exploring the work of established documentary photographers. They will learn to develop their vision by identifying themes of personal interest and finding stories around them. The course takes a hands-on approach to visual storytelling\, with participants shooting images weekly and receiving feedback from the instructor and in group critiques. In the process\, they learn the principles\, ethics of and approaches to documentary photography and refine their work. \nParticipants in this course should possess basic technical proficiency in photography and have an interest in visual storytelling and documentary photography. They will maximise their learning in the course if they commit to working on their photo story between sessions. This course will also be useful to those who want to use documentary photography and visual storytelling across a variety of disciplines from advocacy\, to marketing\, to journalism and more. \nParticipants are to use their own cameras and other softwares (if applicable) which they are comfortable with for this workshop. \nKindly note that this instalment of the workshop will run in a hybrid model\, consisting of a mixture of in-person and online sessions. As part of her residency project\, she conducted walking workshops in Phnom Penh\, Bangkok and Berlin. This project idea draws on her ongoing research on our relationship with urbanity in rapidly developing cities. \nZen (visual art) and SueKi (dance) as collaborators\, are now interested in moving forward with research into Singapore’s urban context\, delving deeper into how they can explore the discourses on light and urbanity through multidisciplinary means: soundscapes\, multimedia data translation\, movement\, and tactile forms. This provides multiple entry points into the research as well as the interpretation\, creation\, and presentation of the data. Through artistic means\, they are interested in opening up a space where people can take time to process and discuss their embodied perspectives on light and darkness\, and how these ever co-existing elements are inextricably linked to life rhythms\, memories\, pollution\, urban development\, safety and surveillance\, environmental changes\, accessibility of energy\, and volatile global political states. \n— \nAbout Zen Teh\nZen Teh (b.1988\, Singapore) is an artist and educator interested in man’s relationship with the natural world. Her art practice spans photography\, sculpture and installation art. Teh has initiated collaborative interdisciplinary projects with artists\, art professionals and scientists to explore the impact of human activity on natural environments. Teh’s works have been showcased in Singapore and regionally including Thailand\, Cambodia\, Indonesia\, Korea\, Japan\, Taiwan and China. She was conferred the Young Artist Award by The National Arts Council\, Singapore in 2021. She was artist-in-residence at the International Studio Programme at Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin\, Germany in 2024. \nAbout SueKi Yee\nSueKi Yee is a Malaysian dancer-choreographer (currently based in Berlin) who’s drawn to improvisation\, site-specific work\, and multidisciplinary experimentation and collaboration. With a Bachelor in Dance (ASWARA)\, she’s trained in contemporary dance\, ballet\, and various traditional folk and classical dances. Movement has become her entry point into understanding and exploring other art forms\, providing diverse entry points into her work and expanding the horizons of research\, creation\, and presentation.

Transforming Objectifs’ Chapel Gallery into a shared\, psychological artists’ studio\, the exhibition synthesises four propositions on care by artists Hu Rui\, Genevieve Leong\, Huijun Lu\, and Arabelle Zhuang. The informal gatherings aim to broaden and deepen the discourse\, probing the values encoded in our words and actions. Featuring programmes such as a dialogue with artist Ezzam Rahman and open studios\, these gatherings create a space to imagine how we might journey together sustainably\, thriving within—and beyond—Singapore’s pursuit of excellence. \n— \nAbout the Curator\nLenette Lua is a practice-led researcher and curator whose interests delve into reconciling the contested intersections of political\, economic\, and socio-cultural spheres through her curatorial work. While at the Royal College of Art in London\, she initiated the long-term curatorial project ‘Fungi Initiative\,’ exploring institutional collaborations via participatory artist-led workshops. She was the recipient of the Objectifs Curator Open Call 2024 Award. \nAbout the Artists \nArabelle Zhuang is an interdisciplinary artist working across photography\, moving images and textiles. In her practice\, Zhuang examines the interpersonal relationship\, beauty in the peripheral and the cyclical nature of being. She is interested in developing narratives that search for the multiplicities of everyday life and the layers in between. \nEzzam Rahman is a multi-disciplinary artist known for his interest in the body and the use of common\, easily accessible\, yet unconventional media in his art practice. Working across sculpture\, installation\, digital media\, and performance\, he creates works that are often autobiographical\, time-based\, and ephemeral\, aiming to pique viewers’ thoughts on the themes of body politics\, identity\, impermanence\, traces\, and abjection. He was awarded a joint winner of the Grand Prize for the President’s Young Talents 2015 and the People’s Choice Award by the Singapore Art Museum. Ezzam won the Most Promising Award for photography at the PULSE Awards 2021. He served as artistic director for The Substation in 2021 and was involved in various prestigious programmes\, including the NIE Visiting Artist Programme and NAC Our SG Arts Plan launch event. \nGenevieve Leong‘s art practice attempts to visualise the intangible. Beginning with the immaterial\, her work often combines text\, image\, found and made objects and the manipulation of space to create what she describes as “an almost physical image”. The installations that she creates often embody an impermanence with possibilities for change\, whether it be due to audience participation or natural environmental factors. Her work seeks to shed new light onto her emotions\, sensations\, and realisations. \nHu Rui works with videos\, installations\, and computer simulation. His practice engages with issues around temporality from a multitude of variables\, including causality\, prediction\, choice\, and language. He is the recipient of the Best Experimental Animation Award at the 60th Ann Arbor Film Festival and a Jury Special Mention at the 25FPS Festival Croatia. He is Assistant Professor in Computation and Design at Duke Kunshan University. \nHuijun Lu works at the intersections of art\, music\, engineering and computing. Lu’s practice culminates in kinetic installations\, sculptures\, moving images and soundscapes. Consistent in the works are mechanisms and circuits that examine the function of objects\, observations about the unnoticed in our environments\, and technology’s role in mediating relationships with our surroundings. \nAbout the designer \nVanessa Ban is a designer and educator with over a decade of experience working with cultural institutions and commercial clients. She is the founder of External Assessment Summer School\, an interdisciplinary educational initiative that bridges art\, critical theory\, and design. Vanessa has served on jury panels including D&AD and The Crowbar Awards. As an adjunct faculty\, she incorporates her professional expertise and critical design approach honed through experiences at Pentagram\, Typography Summer School New York\, and the London College of Communication.

Are you curious about all the exciting new features of your smartphone and how it can be used to make visually compelling stories? Smartphone Filmmaking is the perfect introduction to filmmaking for first-time filmmakers! Participants will learn pre-production skills (i.e. how to storyboard\, come up with a script\, cinematography techniques\, lighting and sound knowledge)\, engage in film production (i.e. how to cast\, direct\, and do production management)\, and post-production (i.e. film editing). \nThe workshop includes on-location\, hands-on camera work and consultation as participants work together in teams to complete individual short films. This fascination is informed by her experiences growing up in amateur Chinese orchestras and the internet. \nShu holds a BFA (Hons) in Media Art (Photography) from Nanyang Technological University\, School of Art\, Design\, and Media. She was awarded the Kwek Leng Joo Prize of Excellence in Photography and featured in the 6th Women in Film and Photography Showcase by Objectifs (Singapore). Recently\, she had her first solo presentation at Esplanade (Singapore) as part of the Singapore Art Week 2024. She has participated in exhibitions\, showcases\, and festivals internationally\, including in Austria\, Cambodia\, China\, Germany\, Indonesia\, Italy\, Malaysia\, the Netherlands\, South Korea\, Taiwan\, and Thailand.

From farming green tea to researching sea salt\, practising photography has provided her with a way of reconciling the paradoxical feelings of discomfort and joy while exploring her new home. This creative outlet became especially poignant during a time when borders in Japan were closed and there were numerous insecurities about the future. \nEach photograph chosen represents a specific moment of beauty and longing for Ryhan. When being in the present also alludes to a well grieved past\, this yearning for harmony between nostalgia and the allure of new memories is the fabric of her unapologetically human behaviour. \nShot primarily on film\, each photograph is accompanied by Ryhan’s honest thoughts on tackling the harsh realities that came with making her dreams a reality. Trying to bridge the disconnect between the person she was when she left Singapore\, and who she is now. \nRyhan has since also collaborated with two other artists\, DaybyDae and MZA\, in an attempt to make the rootlessness\, tangible. Through the medium of pottery and music\, both collaborators were given the freedom to interpret the photographs in their own voice. \n\nRyhan M.Y.\nFull-time farmer\, part-time photographer; the quiet of the countryside is where Ryhan finds her loudest bursts of creativity. Day in\, day out\, the continuous routine of the fields have trained her attention for detail and tenacity to seek out the beauty in small daily rituals. Shooting on both digital and film\, she hopes to capture these delicate intricacies for others to appreciate. \nDaybyDae \nA Singapore-based potter\, Daesiree creates functional tableware using wheel throwing and hand building techniques. Her work explores the inherent elegance of form and function\, where nature serves as a guiding muse. Her passion for pottery blossomed in 2019 and since then\, she has been honing her skills in creating functional ceramics that bridges the gap between everyday objects and artistic expressions. Motherhood adds another dimension to her work\, where she finds inspiration in the joy of everyday living. Whether crafting unique cups to elegant serving platters\, she strives to infuse each piece with a sense of beauty and functionality. \nMZA\nA mixed Japanese-Singaporean DJ/producer\, based in Singapore. MZA creates music inspired by jazz\, hip hop and dance culture. Often using a mixture of drum machines\, electronic synthesisers and traditional folk instruments from the East and Southeast Asian region.

They are one of the area’s oldest indigenous residents. The tribe has a deep spiritual and emotional connection to the land from years of living in and managing the forest\, with the frankincense tree occupying a special place in their folklore and beliefs. Aside for using the land for farming and gathering\, they harvest the fragrant resin of frankincense trees\, a practice that has been in place for generations. \nThe tribe’s ancestral lands have slowly been encroached upon by eucalyptus plantations established by a major company that pulps eucalyptus trees for industrial purposes. These plantations have turned a vibrant ecosystem into a monoculture; the frankincense trees that used to grow plentifully are disappearing and the land has been left bereft\, threatening the tribe’s traditional livelihoods and practices. \nAbout the Objectifs Documentary Award\nThe Objectifs Documentary Award champions Objectifs’ mission to broaden perspectives through image making\, by supporting original voices in visual storytelling in Singapore and the wider region. Recipients will be responsible for all incidentals\, travel meals\, living expenses and hiring of any assistants or production crew (if/where relevant).\nRecipients grant Objectifs the right to reproduce images from the project for non-commercial purposes relating to the promotion and marketing of the Award and Objectifs programmes.\nObjectifs should be acknowledged as a Supporter\, together with the showcase of the Recipient’s works resulting from this Award\, in any print or online platforms.\nIn the event that the Recipient is unable to fulfil the commitments or does not complete the project without valid reasons\, Objectifs reserves the right to recover partial or full costs as provided during the Award.\n\n\n\nGeneral \n\n\n\nApplications must be submitted electronically by 27 May 2024. DESCRIPTION:An exhibition by Mark Chua and Lam Li Shuen \n4 to 28 Apr 2024\nObjectifs Lower Gallery 2 \nOpening: Thu 4 Apr 2024\, 7pm – 9pm\nFree admission \nRelated events\nAnalog Filmmaking: The Basics and Experimentations (Please register here)\nDate & Time: Sat 27 Apr\, 2pm – 6pm\nLocation: Objectifs Workshop Space\nFee: $80 (General admission) | $50 (participants aged 35 and under)\nThis workshop is supported by the National Youth Fund (NYF). \nSilhouettes of Having Been is an exhibition by Mark Chua and Lam Li Shuen\, devised as a response to the site of Objectifs Centre for Photography and Film. Focusing on fallen hair strands as a central material\, it is a reflection and turning of attention toward physical presences and the possibilities in being together between time and images. The invisible becomes visible and the minute becomes magnificent as teeming lines are silhouetted against light. \nOver a period of time\, fallen hair strands by people passing through Objectifs were collected. The hair strands were adhered to film loops running through 16mm and Super 8 projectors\, in a live expanded cinema performance taking place before the exhibition. This was done alongside live modifications of the performed film with ink and lenticular interventions\, in combination with an improvisational soundscape with the film loops prepared as percussive elements. As a result\, the film loops were physically altered by the live process\, creating a unique\, unrepeatable moving image piece that forms the core of the exhibition. \nIn the exhibition\, Chua and Lam wish to invite an encounter with the materiality and speculative fictions of fallen hair as a bodily response which silently traces our existences. What do they say and express\, these silhouettes of having been? \nAbout Mark Chua and Lam Li Shuen \nMark Chua and Lam Li Shuen are a Singaporean filmmaker and artist duo. Their films explore existential anxiety\, alienation\, and histories\, often using surrealistic imagery\, bizarre narratives\, and body horror as social commentary. \nTheir films have screened at international film festivals\, including the International Film Festival Rotterdam (2023)\, New Directors/New Films (2023)\, and BFI London Film Festival (2021). In 2021\, they were awarded Best Southeast Asian Director at the Singapore International Film Festival for their short film A Man Trembles. Their short film\, The Cup also received the First Prize (Moving Images) of the Julius Baer Next Generation Art Prize in 2021. \nThey are currently developing their upcoming feature film The Want\, which was selected to participate in Berlinale Talents Script Station 2024\, mylab+@Jogja 2023 and Talents Tokyo 2023.

SUMMARY:[open Call] Objectifs x Momo Short Film Incubator 2024
DESCRIPTION:The Objectifs x Momo Short Film Incubator is an initiative that focuses on developing short film scripts. The programme is open to Southeast Asian filmmakers working with moving images\, and will provide five selected participants with mentorship and a valuable support network as they work on their scripts. \nThe Objectifs x Momo Film Co Short Film Incubator will run from 4 July – 25 August 2024*. DESCRIPTION:Visually document and juxtapose different sights of Singaporean ‘heritage’ in this photowalk that will wind through Tanglin Halt and Wessex Estate. \nDuration\n2h over 1 session \nCourse Description\nOnce the living quarters of British servicemen from the 1930s to the 1970s\, Wessex Estate still boasts of a unique and idyllic charm that is hard to find elsewhere in Singapore. Lined with black-and-white colonial apartment blocks that are situated next to sprawling fields with their strategically planted trees\, the serene estate not only harkens to the country’s colonial past\, but also the troops’ attempts to transform a piece of Singapore into a place reminiscent of home. \nThis purposefully-crafted route will first take participants through the quickly transforming Tanglin Halt heartlands and parts of the Rail Corridor before arriving at Wessex Estate. Participants will get the opportunity to visually document and juxtapose – not to mention\, contemplate – vastly different sights of local ‘heritage’. After the success of last year’s inaugural edition\, which showcased a range of short films confronting topics spanning from the absurd to the nuances of everyday life\, the FreshTake!  Open Call is back again to uncover even more varied perspectives from the next generation of filmmakers! \nSelected films will be screened at Objectifs in August 2024\, accompanied by talks and post-screening discussions. \nThis programme is held in conjunction with the Objectifs x Momo Film Co Short Film Incubator 2024. \nAPPLICATION CRITERIA \n1. Applicants must be individuals based in Singapore:\na) Who are currently enrolled in full-time education as students\nb) Or were graduates (between Jan 2023 to Apr 2024) who completed their films while enrolled as a full-time student. \nKindly note that proof of identity may be required for verification purposes. \n2. The team behind the festival similarly reflects this ethos: MWPF comprises both locals and migrants from many different countries\, who co-organise this initiative in the spirit of friendship\, equality\, and community. \nPresented by the Migrant Workers Photography Festival (MWPF)\, and supported by Objectifs and FotoHub.
