SUMMARY:A Thousand Stitches
DESCRIPTION:A vandalised artwork. An enigmatic painter forced to create wartime propaganda. A desperate act of love.  \nAs Emma\, an art conservation student restores a portrait of a Japanese woman\, Mizuki\, she finds herself transported deep into the heart of Syonan-to—Japanese-occupied Singapore. There\, Emma stitches together the lives of Mizuki\, the artist\, Huang Wei and the storms that raged in and around them. \nA Thousand Stitches is a moving story of friendship\, heartbreak and loss told through a blend of performance\, painting and live cinema. A haunting reimagining of a difficult chapter of Singapore’s history\, this presentation explores the transgenerational impact of war and the necessity of hope in the darkest of times.

SUMMARY:STATEMENT PIECE
DESCRIPTION:  \nTwo weeks after a loss that reverberates through the nation\, a young gallerist prepares for her first exhibition. Lily has endured constant pressure from her formidable boss\, spent countless hours on research\, revved up the public for a buzzworthy show – everything for the perfect opening that will cement her name in the art world. The months of suffering are about to pay off at last. But when the final painting arrives\, hand-delivered by the reclusive Gopal Rangaraj himself\, she is horrified. With the entire exhibition – and her fledgling career – on the line\, even the surprise visit from her artist girlfriend Marjia can’t cushion the gravity of the situation. As three different worldviews collide\, how much should be sacrificed in the name of Art? \nFollowing the sold-out success of Brown Boys Don’t Tell Jokes (2023)\, critically acclaimed playwright Myle Yan Tay returns with Statement Piece\, a new play that continually shifts the lens on how the beliefs and choices that push us apart are often born from a yearning for acceptance and community. His signature blend of sharp humour and acute insight is dexterously brought to the stage by director Claire Wong with nuance\, elegance\, and a sure hand. \nHuzir Sulaiman ably takes on dual roles as dramaturg and performer\, starring alongside Rusydina Afiqah and Tricia Tan in this powerfully vivid work. Statement Piece interrogates the purpose of art in this country\, the limits of our ambitions\, and the legacies we leave.

SUMMARY:Playing With Fire by Checkpoint Theatre
DESCRIPTION:With climate catastrophe on the horizon\, why would anyone want to work in oil and gas? \nHaving secured interviews with several employees of the petrochemical industry\, this is the question a determined young writer expects to answer. Instead\, Sue Rozario finds herself uncovering a troubling web of connections between the oil and gas industry\, Singapore’s modern development\, and her own family history. As she delves deeper into her research\, she is forced to confront layers of hidden truths – not only of her interviewees’ personal and professional lives\, but also of her own. \nPlaying With Fire shares a profoundly human look into Singapore’s industrial past and present\, while placing the complexities of a just energy transition under a microscope. \nCheyenne Alexandria Phillips’ sharp\, sophisticated writing shines in this new play that interrogates the relationships between people and industry with empathy and nuance. Claire Wong’s skilful direction anchors an exceptional cast\, comprising Rebecca Ashley Dass\, Cheryl Lee\, Gosteloa Spancer\, Nora Samosir\, and Rafaat Haji Hamzah\, who bring the complexities and tensions of this thrilling work to life. \nTimely and compelling\, Playing With Fire examines how we have become implicated in the climate crisis\, and asks what it would take to break out of it. \n  \nDuration: Approximately 90 minutes \nRating: G

SUMMARY:Happy Indian Women
DESCRIPTION:Being a woman is tough. Being an Indian woman is even tougher. We must be independent\, but not too independent that we tarnish the family name. We must be strong enough to withstand the constant scrutiny that our bodies\, minds and personalities are subject to. We’re too dark\, too short\, too thin\, too educated\, too loud\, too much. Our friends still ask us if we speak ‘Indian’. Or worse\, they assume we are Indian just because we are a certain shade of brown.   \n  \nWritten by The Necessary Stage’s Associate Artist Sindhura Kalidas\, Happy Indian Women is a verbatim theatre production that questions the assumptions we make about the diverse South Asian diaspora in Singapore. Based on interviews with 20 women and non-binary people from various backgrounds\, the play interweaves text\, sound and multimedia to celebrate their honest and tender stories about faith\, friendship and family.

SUMMARY:The Chair
DESCRIPTION:The Chair\nA dead story told in 7 chapters\nAn unspeakable tragedy has struck a quiet small town. To restore order\, justice\, and inner peace\, the law compels the victims to get their hands dirty – but who will be held accountable? \nPerformed by the ITI graduating cohort of 2023\, The Chair is an original work that raises questions on individual and collective responsibility\, grief\, and the desperate\, at times absurd pursuit of justice in an unjust world. Who has the right to decide? When is justice served? What do we owe to each other in the balancing of scales? \nThis thought-provoking ensemble work is brought to life by five actor-students\, incorporating their training in Asian Traditional and Western Contemporary forms with the clarity\, rhythm\, and stylistic precision of V. Meyerhold’s Biomechanics\, taught by the play’s Director and ITI Acting teacher Li Xie. \nAdvisory (Some Mature Content) \n——— \nDirector: Li Xie\nSet Design: Devised by Director and Cast\nLighting Designer: Faith Liu Yong Huay\nCostume Designer: Max Tan\nSound Designer: Meng Jiaoyang \nProduction Manager: Clarisse Ng\nStage Manager: Marilyn Chew\nAssistant Stage Manager: Shivani Rajan \nCast: Abinaya Jothi\, Cheng Kam Yiu (Yolanda)\, Choy Chee Yew\, Mika Oskarson Kindstrand\, Swathilakshmi Perumal

SUMMARY:Somewhere
DESCRIPTION:Love is an act of courage. When Bruce and Sue meet four weeks after an uncharacteristic one-night-stand in Singapore\, Sue has this to say to him: “one\, I had a great time with you that night” and “two\, let’s never see each other again”. Thus begins a 500 mile journey well beyond the confines of their carefully structured worlds. Bruce is fuelled by an overwhelming but undefined compulsion to join her in George Town. Sue is reluctantly charmed by his persistence\, but steadfast in her resolve to keep him at bay. Both are forced to consider a whole new world of possibility\, though not one free of difficulty and loss. As an unlikely romance develops\, the play blossoms into a dramatic comedy about courage. Based on the play “Phoenix”\, written by Scott Organ. \nDirected by \nDuration: Siddhant Lahiri \nDates: 11 AUG 2023 – 13 AUG 2023 / 7.30PM \n\nVenue: Drama Centre Black Box \n\nApproximately 1 hour 30 minutes (with 10 minutes interval) \nMore info: https://artshouselimited.sg/dc-whatson-details/theatre/somewhere

SUMMARY:SIFA 2023: INTERMISSION
DESCRIPTION:Date: 2 June Friday & 3 June Saturday\nTime: 8pm \nDuration: 1h\, no intermission\nVenue: Drama Centre Black Box\nTickets: $38 \nPerformed in Thai with English surtitles \nTraditional Thai music and contemporary dance practice intertwine to examine the body as a political site and the sociopolitical power of dance. \nStuck in the state-enforced past and unable to see the future of his own country\, director Thanapol Virulhakul proposes Thai postmodern dance as a method to navigate Thailand’s socio-political power structure that infiltrates all areas of a citizen’s life. A single dancing body portrays how political power relates to each individual. \nIn collaboration with the Bangkok International Performing Arts Meeting (BIPAM) and George Town Festival (GTF)\, veteran Thai folk musician Champa Saenprom is reunited with the contemporary dancer Vidura Amranand in a mystical postmodern. Dancer Vidura draws on contemporary dance vocabulary and her practice in dance movement psychotherapy\, while Champa uses traditional song to invoke “Kwan”\, the protective guardian spirit of the human soul. Music and dance come together to dig deep and assert the potential of art as resistance against the powers that be. \nA co-production between BIPAM\, SIFA and GTF. \nImage courtesy of Rueangrith Suntisuk

SUMMARY:CUCKOO
DESCRIPTION:What can a bunch of talkative rice cookers tell us about the past twenty years of Korean history? \nOne day when his electric rice cooker informed him that his meal was ready\, Jaha Koo experienced a deep sense of isolation. ‘Golibmuwon’ (고립무원) is an untranslatable Korean word expressing the feeling of helpless isolation that characterises the lives of many young people in Korea today. At turns sombre and amusing\, CUCKOO is Jaha Koo’s bittersweet reflection on the personal and social impact of economic crises that South Korea has weathered in recent decades. \nCuckoo is part of Jaha Koo’s Hamartia Trilogy. SIFA 2023 presents two works from this trilogy: Lolling and Rolling\, and Cuckoo. Jaha Koo intertwines personal stories with historical\, political and sociological facts\, exploring the clash of Eastern and Western culture: from the cutting of tongue belts to succeed in the West\, to the heavy personal toll of Western interference in global macroeconomics.

SUMMARY:We Are Like This Only 3
DESCRIPTION:“We Are Like This Only 3” is back to explore the real and perceived impressions that Singaporeans\, particularly the Chinese\, have of the ‘New Indians” in our community and vice versa. The comical play takes on a number of racist and xenophobic peeves that have been amplified on social media\, wrestling with real and anecdotal situations with humour and a sense of the ridiculous. These include incidents during the lockdown\, feelings of being crowded out\, locals’ perception of job competition\, stereotyping Indian doctors\, employer-employee relationships\, the perceived arrogance/stand-offishness of new Indians and more. At the end of an entertaining evening at the theatre combined with the possibility that folks will go home a little bit wiser\, accepting that we are all “different but same same”\, a forum theatre style interactive discussion between the audience and the actors will bring out personal observations\, emotions and challenges of integrating in Singapore. \n“We Are Like This Only 3” directed by Daisy Irani Subaiah and written by Subin Subaiah\, will be performed by the brilliant cast of award winning actors Josephine Tan\, Daisy Irani\, Hang Qian Chou and Subin Subaiah. \n“We Are Like This Only 3” will also feature the designs of 2022’s Life!Theatre award winning Lighting Designer Alberta Wileo\, Set Design by Keng San from On Staging\, and our very own “Tea Party Rap” written by Preetipls (also known as Preeti Nair).

SUMMARY:Checkpoint Theatre presents Brown Boys Don’t Tell Jokes – A New Play by Myle Yan Tan
DESCRIPTION:The eve of an election. A politician\, a musician\, an activist\, an academic\, and a therapist reunite after several years. As the five friends catch up on the different paths their lives have taken\, they realise their rose-tinted memories might be the only thing holding them together. With secrets unravelling\, old conflicts reawakening\, and a threat looming\, the five are forced to confront the boys they once were\, and the men they want to become. \n  \nPlaywright Myle Yan Tay’s powerful and incisive play lays bare the tensions of male friendship with sharp humour and searching questions. As past mistakes lead to dire consequences\, should loyalty prevail over shifting values? What does it take to be a friend? \nHuzir Sulaiman’s deft direction illuminates the finely-crafted text\, interrogating what it means to be a brown boy in Singapore. With a stellar ensemble cast comprising Gosteloa Spancer\, Krish Natarajan\, Ebi Shankara\, Adib Kosnan\, and Shahid Nasheer\, Brown Boys Don’t Tell Jokes is a nuanced and unflinching examination of friendship\, race\, and masculinity in our country.

SUMMARY:When cloud catches colours
DESCRIPTION:Qing is struggling to deal with the aftermath of a relationship that ended after 20 years. E is negotiating the difficult position of sole-caregiving to a mother who does not fully accept her. \nBoth Qing and E identify as queer\, and are in their fifties. On the cusp of old age\, Qing and E are finding that they have another set of challenges to overcome as queer individuals. \nWhen cloud catches colours is a verbatim theatre based on true accounts that highlights how the sense of safety changes for a queer person as they get older. With much of the queer discourse in Singapore largely focused on the youths\, what lies ahead of someone who has lived most of their life in the margins? \nPerformed in English and Mandarin\, with English surtitles.
