SUMMARY:Symbiocene
DESCRIPTION:In 2025\, a mysterious and highly disruptive force ruptures the boundaries between humans\, plants\, and animals. Under the banner of Expedisi Harapan Sembilan\, three outcasts – a world-weary park ranger\, a psychic\, and a fungal traveller – are sent into the epicentre of this rupture\, Penang Botanical Gardens\, to investigate. \nWhat will they find and how will it change them? \nSymbiocene is an ecopunk tale of love\, grief\, and a wild re-imagination of a world where humans\, plants\, and animals live together symbiotically. \nCoined by the Australian philosopher\, Glenn Albrecht\, Symbiocene is a period of re-integration between humans and the rest of nature\, a time of living together and companionship. In the play\, the Symbiocene is imagined as a world populated by human-plant-animals creatures where language and meaning are deconstructed and reconstructed. \nInspired by the genesis of the cyberpunk genre\, we coined a term “ecopunk”. “Eco” as in ecology\, the relations between living things and their habitats. “Punk” as in a defiance against the status quo. In our ecopunk world\, we follow a group of outcasts as they navigate a world that re-centres all living things as equal.

SUMMARY:SOUL of Odyssey - Multi-sensory\, Multimedia\, Multi-genre
DESCRIPTION:KL Shakespeare Players and the Hiroshi Koike Bridge Project of Japan announce the staging of SOUL of Odyssey an international collaboration from 26 October to 29 October at the Damansara Performing Arts Centre (dpac).  \nThis multi-sensory work\, based on the Greek classic by Homer\, devises and reimagines the hero’s journey and his attempts to rise from the ashes of war\, chaos\, and battles with deities. It questions and explores how human beings react to forces perceived to be out of their control. Or as in the proverbial question: “What happens to ants when elephants fight?”  \nWhen asked what informs his productions with their constant shifts of sensory focus\, Hiroshi Koike\, the artistic director of the production\, says that he wants to “shock and inspire”\, especially the young\, to imagine possibilities.  \nSOUL of Odyssey weaves different performative practices\, traditions and elements–dialogue\, storytelling\, movement\, dance\, live videos\, live music\, songs\, and chants–wrapped together with the aesthetic vision to create an integrated work that harmonizes sensory perceptions. In short\, a multimedia\, multisensory experience that informs holistically without privileging the intellect. Actors will speak in Bahasa Melayu\, Chinese\, English and Japanese. \nThis production is suitable for all ages.

SUMMARY:A Listening Body
DESCRIPTION:A listening body is a dance-theatre experience based on January’s thoughts and questions in and around Odissi. Informed by a practice that spans 30 years\, and more recently empowered by a virtual mentorship with (Odissi exponent) Bijayini Satpathy\, January has deepened her relationship with Odissi by actively listening and responding to her body\, mind and environment. This work peels away the commodified and exoticised layers of Odissi to reveal a relationship that is personal\, vulnerable and respectful\, enabling agency for both audience and performer to be equal partners in the experience. \nJanuary Low\, born in Kuala Lumpur\, Malaysia started dancing with Classical Ballet\, followed by 25 years of Indian Classical dance training in Sutra Dance Theatre\, Malaysia\, focusing on Odissi. https://www.januarylow.com/ \nShow times: \n20 Jul 2023 08:00PM\n21 Jul 2023 08:00PM\n22 Jul 2023 03:00PM\n22 Jul 2023 08:00PM
