SUMMARY:Orbiting body
DESCRIPTION:Artists:\nApichatpong Weerasethakul\nAraya Rasdjarmrearnsook\nPratchaya Phinthong\nSathit Sattarasart\nSorawit Songsataya \n  \nCurator: Mary Pansanga \nImages are re-creations of what one has seen\, whether with the eye or in the ‘mind’s eye’. This re-created image is separated from the space-time of the image’s original or prior appearance. The image therefore instantiates a new state of visibility\, connecting in several dimensions what lies before us in the present time\, and what has already transpired. \nMethods of image-making have evolved with technological advancements. We began to express our observations with our hands and bodies\, then used tools and apparatuses to record images\, surpassing the limitations of memory. This has opened up new possibilities\, from capturing a single moment to creating moving images that can challenge our perception of space and time. \n‘Orbiting body’ is an exhibition that explores the moving image through the works of five Thai artists: Apichatpong Weerasethakul\, Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook\, Pratchaya Phinthong\, Sathit Sattarasart\, and Sorawit Songsataya. Each artist utilises images to create an interval\, a passage of perception that reflects the sense of distance – both physical and cognitive – between the viewer and the work. The interplay of these distances is what determines the movement of thoughts\, feelings and bodies within the exhibition space. \nComprising installation\, video\, photography and sculpture\, the exhibition invites us to take time and reflect on the process of visual perception\, as it is shaped by movement\, interpretation\, and interactivity\, as well as the assembly\, dispersal and revitalisation of images.

SUMMARY:Cambodia: War and Beauty
DESCRIPTION:Cambodia is often depicted in the public imagination as either the land of Angkor and Apsaras or the Killing Fields and the Khmer Rouge. An American writer once referred to the countries of Southeast Asia as “the Lands of Cruelty and Charm”. However\, Cambodia is more than death and decoration. It is people who have struggled and survived war and atrocities\, displacement\, and political and social chaos\, all the while working to preserve their culture. That culture now faces the new threat of unconstrained overdevelopment. \nThis is the focus of the photo exhibition “Cambodia: War and Beauty”\, organized by SEA Junction and Ophidian\, on 3-15 October 2023 on the curved wall\, 3rd floor of the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC). This photographic retrospective\, exhibited previously in FCC Angkor by Avani and Meta House in Phnom Penh in 2020 and Paris in 2022\, presents a collection of black and white and color photos taken by David A. Feingold\, a research anthropologist and an award-winning documentary filmmaker\, over the last six decades in Cambodia. \nWhile fostering a better understanding and appreciation of Cambodia’s history\, culture\, and society\, the exhibition aims to showcase the contradictory and complementary elements of Cambodian culture in a historical context. \nOrganizer: \nSEA Junction\, established under the Thai non-profit organization Foundation for Southeast Asia Studies (ForSEA)\, aims to foster understanding and appreciation of Southeast Asia in all its socio-cultural dimensions- from arts and lifestyles to economy and development. Conveniently located at Room 407-8 of the Bangkok Arts and Culture Center or BACC (across MBK\, BTS National Stadium)\, SEA Junction facilitates public access to knowledge resources and exchanges among students\, practitioners and Southeast Asia lovers.
