SUMMARY:Manila Galleon: From Asia to the Americas
DESCRIPTION:Manila Galleon: From Asia to the Americas is the first exhibition in Singapore to explore\na trade across the Pacific that connected Asia to the Americas and Europe. For\ncenturies\, ships laden with porcelain\, silk\, ivory\, spices\, and other goods sailed annually\nacross the Pacific from Manila to Acapulco\, returning with millions of pieces of silver. \nThrough over 140 extraordinary works of art from the 16th to 20th century\, Manila\nGalleon: From Asia to the Americas reveals how the movement of people\, goods\, and\nideas through the Philippines and Mexico created a shared heritage across the seas.\nVisitors can look forward to rare and important objects on loan from prestigious\ninternational partners\, from luxurious gold and silverwares to porcelain\, featherworks\,\nand furniture from across Asia. Stories of diverse communities are brought to life by\nimmersive art installations and programmes\, as visitors are invited to reflect on the\nglobal impact of port cities.

SUMMARY:Exhibiting The Body: Compulsions\, Caveats and Cautions
DESCRIPTION:In art\, the body is a carrier of thoughts rather than a representation of its physicality alone. It can be a vehicle for capturing the various moods\, energies or values that drive society. Looked at another way\, artistic imagery\, in turn\, also has an influence on people—decisions on what kind of bodies have been regarded as being ideal in different periods can make for a fascinating comparative history.  Prof. Ahuja curated the landmark exhibition The Body in Indian Art & Thought in 2013 that redefined the presentation of Indian art in exhibitions across the world. In this lecture he explains why studies in art history have been making the subject of ‘the body’ their focus since the 1990s\, in order to address if “The Body” offers an alternative narrative for history museums. \nThis lecture is organised in conjunction with the exhibition Body & Spirit: The Human Body in Thought and Practice.
