DESCRIPTION:Faith and Forms \nThe Visual and Material Legacy of Christianity in China\, from the 17th Century to Today \nChristianity reached China as early as the seventh century\, during the Tang dynasty. However\, its presence was limited until the arrival of several Jesuit missions in the sixteenth century\, which also brought Western science\, mathematics\, astronomy\, cartography\, and art to China.  \nIn this two-day conference\, scholars and experts from around the world come together to examine the complex relationship between Christianity and Chinese culture. Speakers will explore how Christian ideas\, aesthetics\, and religious iconography have been woven into the fabric of Chinese visual art\, material culture\, and architecture\, from the seventeenth century to today. \nThis conference is held in conjunction with the special exhibition Pagoda Odyssey 1915: From Shanghai to San Francisco (till 1 June 2025).

SUMMARY:Batik Nyonyas: Three Generations of Art and Entrepreneurship
DESCRIPTION:11 October 2024 to 31 August 2025 \nDaily\, 10am–7pm | Fridays\, 10am–9pm \nPeranakan Museum \n$6 for Singaporeans and Permanent Residents; $18 for Foreigners \nFamily\, art\, and entrepreneurship converge in the story of three visionary Peranakan women from Indonesia – Nyonya Oeij Soen King\, her daughter-in-law Nyonya Oeij Kok Sing\, and her granddaughter Jane Hendromartono. From the 1890s to 1980s\, they produced impressive batiks in the renowned batik centre of Pekalongan on Java’s north coast. \nFeaturing about 200 batik textiles and accompanying objects\, Batik Nyonyas: Three Generations of Art and Entrepreneurship examines the lives and careers of these Peranakan women through their works. With batik as a portrait of society\, the exhibition reveals the influence of the Oeij family women as they became batik masters in their own right\, as they ingeniously responded to the rapid political\, cultural and economic changes of their time to run a business that produced great art. Visitors are invited to draw links to the development and evolution of Indonesian batik through a Peranakan perspective\, and to participate in hands-on workshops\, performances and tours. The exhibition will also feature a contemporary art commission by Aiko Tezuka\, an artist specialised in producing art based on the unravelling of woven fabric.

It brings together the works of 28 established and emerging designers\, and adopts a sustainable exhibition design with upcycled materials. \nThe #SGFASHIONNOW series celebrates contemporary Singapore fashion through the lens of our multicultural\, cosmopolitan port city heritage. Exploring the themes of craftsmanship\, innovation in tradition\, and urban styles\, the stunning pieces on display include iconic works by Benny Ong\, Time Taken to Make a Dress\, and Harry Halim\, once worn by the late Princess Diana\, Singaporean actress Constance Lau\, and singer Lee Chaelin (CL)\, from K-pop group 2NE1. This edition also includes a commission by Baëlf Design that pushes the boundaries of fashion and art\, on display in Singapore for the first time. \n#SGFASHIONNOW: Runway Singapore will be accompanied by talks and a catalogue that provides a unique snapshot of ACM’s continuous\, evolving conversation with the fashion community.

SUMMARY:An Evening with Claire Keegan
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening with Booker Prize shortlisted writer\, Claire Keegan\, where Claire will read from her fiction and answer questions about her work and writing life.\nThis workshop is kindly supported by NTU’s School of Humanities and the National Arts Council.\n——————–\n ABOUT CLAIRE KEEGAN:\nClaire Keegan was raised on a farm on the Wicklow/Wexford border. Her works have won numerous awards and are translated into more than thirty languages. Antarctica won the Rooney Prize for Irish Literature. Walk the Blue Fields won the Edge Hill Prize for the finest collection of stories published in the British Isles. Foster\, after winning the Davy Byrnes Award — then the world’s richest prize for a story — was chosen by The Times as one of the top 50 works to be published in the 21st Century. It is now part of the school syllabus in Ireland. Her latest\, Small Things Like These\, was shortlisted for the Booker Prize and the Rathbones Folio Prize. It won the Orwell Prize for Political Fiction\, the Ambassadors’ Prize for best Irish novel published in France\, and The Kerry Prize for Irish Novel of the year.
