SUMMARY:Lost & Found: Embodied Archive
DESCRIPTION:25 October to 24 November 2024\, 10am to 7pm \nGallery 3\, Level 3\, Singapore Art Museum at Tanjong Pagar Distripark \nAdmission is free. \n  \nWhen we think of an archive\, an intuitive association that comes to mind might be a physical space teeming with material objects\, records and documents. By incorporating physical manifestations into artworks\, Lost & Found: Embodied Archive is the second pillar of Singapore Art Museum’s (SAM) multi-phase\, multi-year curatorial study project\, which allows curators and artists to experiment with new formats. Can traditional methods of documentation fully capture and preserve an artwork? How can performances or bodily experiences be “collected” or remembered? Expanding on this notion\, the exhibition invites visitors to consider the body as a reservoir of memory\, where artworks choreograph our encounters with them\, activating us bodily as visitors.  \n  \nFrom 25 October to 24 November 2024\, visitors are invited to step between intersections of the body and memory to explore rituals of space\, mind and humanity in a month-long exhibition at SAM at Tanjong Pagar Distripark. Comprising nine artworks ranging from national collection pieces by Albert Yonathan Setyawan\, Lee Wen and Gregory Halili\, to loaned works by Tiyan Baker\, Lee Kang Seung and Tuguldur Yodonjamts\, and a new commission by Au Sow Yee & Chen Yow-Ruu (Her Lab Space)\, Lost & Found: Embodied Archive re-envisions the body as a convergence of the past and present while opening possibilities for new encounters and interpretations.  \n  \nThis curatorial project engages emerging and established contemporary artists to explore the importance of archival documentation and records through artistic practices and community collaboration and to delve deeper into the notion and significance of archives. Reimagining how the experience of physical encounters being embedded in artworks and art experiences\, Lost & Found: Embodied Archive offers visitors the opportunity to explore new ways of understanding and engaging with contemporary art. Beyond static works\, the exhibition embraces the process of becoming by making space for the live nature of performative works in its midst. Many artists involved have also conceptualised performances\, workshops\, and talks that run concurrently over the month\, slowly unfurling as works are activated in turn\, creating an intentional space for movement\, rhythm\, and reflection. Participate actively in Lost & Found: Embodied Archive and its accompanying programmes and deepen your engagement in the interplay between artistic practices\, memory\, and the notion of the archive.  \n  \n\nWebsite: https://www.singaporeartmuseum.sg/art-events/exhibitions/embodied-archive\nFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/singaporeartmuseum\nTwitter: https://twitter.com/sgartmuseum\nInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/singaporeartmuseum\nTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@singaporeartmuseum

SUMMARY:Rattan Eco Sprawl: Manifesting the Forest by Zen Teh
DESCRIPTION:Singapore Art Museum (SAM) presents Rattan Eco Sprawl: Manifesting the Forest\, a newly commissioned artwork by Singaporean artist Zen Teh. This installation is part of Port/raits of Tanjong Pagar\, a public art trail by The Everyday Museum that brings artistic perspectives into everyday spaces in the Tanjong Pagar neighbourhood. It joins other works on the trail by five other artists Aki Hassan\, Divaagar\, Space Objekt\, Grace Tan and Isabella Teng. \nNestled in a tranquil\, lush corner of Spottiswoode Park\, Rattan Eco Sprawl is crafted primarily from rattan\, with forms inspired by natural elements such as mountains and mounds where insects dwell — the same formations that have also influenced sacred structures like Cambodia’s Angkor Wat. Live plants encroach on the structure’s exterior\, while the interior of the work\, with its lowered ceilings and narrowed passageways resembles a space where the natural world can be contemplated and nurtured.  \nSet against the backdrop of Singapore’s rapidly changing urban landscape\, Rattan Eco Sprawl reflects on the entanglement of nature and urban development. Through collaborating with rattan and wood artisans\, an ecologist\, and study of the local environments\, Rattan Eco Sprawl highlights our fragile\, intertwined relationship with nature. \nIn conjunction with the launch of the work on 6 October 2024\, a special artist talk will take place on the same day at SAM at Tanjong Pagar Distripark. The programme features a short film screening on the making of the work and a talk by artist Zen Teh who will discuss her interdisciplinary approach. Also present are the key collaborators of the work — the rattan artisans from Cambodia. Participants will have a chance to learn from the artisans\, weaving techniques used to create the installation. Registration is free.  \nRattan Eco Sprawl: Manifesting the Forest is commissioned by The Everyday Museum\, a public art initiative by Singapore Art Museum.

SUMMARY:Hello Future: Building a Wonderland
DESCRIPTION:What does a sustainable future mean to you? In this exhibition\, witness the creativity of preschool children and discover the futures they have imagined! \nHello Future: Building a Wonderland is part of the Think! Contemporary Preschool programme\, presented by Singapore Art Museum (SAM) in partnership with eight preschools across Singapore. As part of the programme\, young children learn about the world around them through contemporary art. To develop Hello Future\, children were introduced to artworks and exhibitions at SAM at Tanjong Pagar Distripark\, such as Black Forest by Cultural Medallion recipient Han Sai Por and Olafur Eliasson: Your curious journey. The artworks show the impact of humans on the environment as well as the importance of living sustainably. With guidance from their teachers\, they learnt how global warming has a cascading effect on our ecosystems and why they must protect the environment. \nWorking with their friends\, families and teachers\, the children used newly acquired techniques to transform found materials into artworks and stories that convey their hopes for the future. \nAs you explore this Wonderland created by children\, uncover their whimsical ideas for building a sustainable Singapore!

SUMMARY:Art in the Commons: Data Visualising Jurong | Synthetic Visions for a Future Past (Jurong Dreaming)
DESCRIPTION:Art in the Commons: Data Visualising Jurong | Synthetic Visions for a Future Past (Jurong Dreaming) \nFrom 1 June to 10 September 2023 at Science Centre Singapore \nAccess to the installation is included with general admission to Science Centre Singapore  \nThe third and last edition of Art in the Commons: Data Visualising Jurong returns with a new art installation by Singaporean artist Kapilan Naidu\, which looks to document and reimagine the experiences and memories of the many people who have lived\, worked\, and played in the Jurong neighbourhood. Synthetic Visions for a Future Past (Jurong Dreaming) is an interactive artwork of an artificial mangrove swamp\, constructed from a combination of industrial materials and digital screens.  \nDrawing from crowd-sourced images and stories\, the artist diffuses these memories across a network of islands and taps into artificial intelligence algorithms to create an ever-growing array of visions of the neighbourhood. Audiences are encouraged to browse\, sort and contribute to the collection of memories\, coming together playfully to contribute to the artwork’s visual imagination of a Jurong that is simultaneously fresh yet familiar to the neighbourhood.   \nThis presentation is part of Art in the Commons: Data Visualising Jurong\, SAM’s collaboration with Science Centre Singapore that embarks on community-based participatory art programmes to uncover community interests within the Jurong district. The initiative is supported by the Tote Board. For more details\, please visit bit.ly/AITCCycle3.  \n

SUMMARY:Joo Choon Lin: Dance in the Destruction Dance
DESCRIPTION:Through an atmospheric environment that is both a performance space and art installation\, Joo Choon Lin: Dance in the Destruction Dance is an exploration of how the present is an illusion\, and things are not what they seem. Joo’s multisensory environment is an instrument for experimental storytelling that highlights how post-industrial materials such as plastics\, wood and metal can continuously shapeshift. \nThe installation is accompanied by theatrical performances that highlight this migration of forms and shapes the narrative of the exhibition\, exploring how perception (or what we see) are just appearances of what we imagine the world to be.

SUMMARY:Can Everybody See My Screen?
DESCRIPTION:As we navigate the spaces of the virtual\, physical\, digital\, phygital – terms that have gained new meanings in and after the time of the pandemic – discover how artists explore the relationship between technology and the human body\, and the space of the screen for interaction\, bonding\, imagination and worlding.\n\n\nCan Everybody See My Screen? looks at the various ways in which artistic practices engage with an increasingly digitalised world—from the technological mediation of the senses and the body\, to social critique\, to how digital spaces may engender possibilities for self-identification\, kinship\, and love. Drawing from works in the SAM Collection and new commissions\, the exhibition highlights recent explorations\, as well as earlier practices from the 2000s.\n\nReferencing one of the most repeated phrases that emerged from a long period of remote interactions\, Can Everybody See My Screen? captures the ambivalence of bodies navigating technology\, with the screen as the interface and locus of mediation.
