SUMMARY:Pachara Piyasongsoot — Your Green is Mine
DESCRIPTION:Richard Koh Fine Art (RKFA) is delighted to present “Your Green is Mine\,” a solo exhibition featuring the works of prominent Thai artist Pachara Piyasongsoot. The exhibition will take place from 9th to 30th September 2023 at RKFA’s Singapore gallery\, located at Blk 47 Malan Road\, #01-26 Gillman Barracks\, Singapore 109444. \nPiyasongsoot’s “Your Green is Mine” offers a thought-provoking exploration of power\, nationalism\, and identity through the lens of nature. Drawing inspiration from the Rajabhakti Park in Thailand\, where the statues of seven notable Thai kings are enshrined\, Piyasongsoot reimagines the significance of trees and green spaces as symbols of strength and nobility. \nPiyasongsoot’s artistic vision intertwines with socio-political commentary\, inviting viewers to question established power structures and the implications of nationalism. By dismantling the boundaries of traditional landscapes\, he opens up possibilities for reimagining personal and collective identities. \n“Your Green is Mine” promises to captivate art enthusiasts and challenge conventional perspectives on power dynamics\, nationalism\, and individual agency. Richard Koh Fine Art invites the public to experience this significant exhibition\, which showcases Piyasongsoot’s evocative works that transcend boundaries and ignite contemplation.

SUMMARY:HAFFENDI ANUAR – INTERIORS
DESCRIPTION:Richard Koh Fine Art (RKFA) is thrilled to present “Interiors\,” a solo exhibition by Haffendi Anuar (b.1985)\, a prominent Malaysian artist known for his thought-provoking works that challenge conventional narratives. The exhibition will be held at RKFA’s Singapore gallery from 15 July to 5 Aug 2023. \nHaffendi Anuar’s artistic practice\, shaped by his MFA studies at Oxford\, delves into the kain pelikat\, a traditional Malaysian cloth\, reimagining it as a symbol of architecture and construction. “Interiors” represents a continuation of Anuar’s exploration of this concept\, where he seamlessly integrates elements of history\, identity\, and resistance. \nThe artworks showcased in the exhibition will shed light on the enduring colonial ideology and gaze on the Malays\, dismantling the myth of laziness and the rest associated with them. In this series\, Anuar ingeniously reinterprets the kain pelikat as facades and screens\, employing various textile materials such as rice sacks from Asian supermarkets in Oxford and London\, gunny sacks sourced in Malaysia\, coffee bean sacks\, and dyed and painted canvas and calico. \nWhile colour plays a significant role in these sculptural pieces\, Anuar emphasizes their sculptural nature rather than their textile origins. Intriguingly\, one of the exhibited works features a scanned page from John Turnbull Thomson’s book\, “Some Glimpses Into Life in the Far East” (1865)\, describing a colonial officer’s dinner party in Penang. This inclusion underscores Anuar’s fascination with the domestic\, particularly as portrayed in colonial texts\, and how his sculptures echo the qualities of curtains\, rugs\, hammocks\, and cradles. \nHaffendi Anuar’s “Interiors” exhibition promises to captivate viewers with its compelling blend of historical inquiry\, cultural reinterpretation\, and evocative sculptural forms. Join us at RKFA’s Singapore gallery to experience this thought-provoking and visually stunning showcase from 15 July to 5 August 2023. \nFor more information\, please visit www.rkfineart.com or contact info@rkfineart.com.

SUMMARY:Le Quốc Thanh: Expert From A Heaven: How to Fly
DESCRIPTION:Richard Koh Fine Art Singapore (RKFA) is happy to announce the upcoming solo exhibition of mixed media paintings by the Vietnamese painter\, Le Quoc Thanh (b.1975). Titled “Excerpts From A Heaven: How To Fly”\, this exhibition is Thanh’s first solo show at the gallery\, presented in partnership with Hanoi-based CUC Gallery. \nThrough his work\, Thanh skillfully blends found items with elements of Vietnamese material culture\, resulting in paintings that possess a unique style entirely of their own. The use of quotidian icons\, including a packet of Craven A cigarettes and black-handled scissors often found in market stalls\, further enhances the distinctive cultural significance of Thanh’s work. Throughout the exhibition\, Thanh explores the instability of signs and signifiers\, often repeatedly painting the numbers “123” and letters “ABC” until their meaning becomes lost. By challenging traditional linguistic and visual regimes\, Thanh creates a visual language that is uniquely his own.

SUMMARY:#09-1464 by Johann Fauzi
DESCRIPTION:Richard Koh Fine Art (RKFA) is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of Singaporean artist Johann Fauzi (b. 1962). The exhibition is curated by Louis Ho\, titled #09-1464. It is scheduled to run from 11 February – 04 March 2023 at Richard Koh Fine Art Singapore\, Blk 47 Malan Road\, #01-26 Gillman Barracks\, Singapore 109444. \n#09-1464 is the first solo exhibition by Singaporean artist\, Johann M.F\, with Richard Koh Fine Art. An aficionado of Baroque and Rococo aesthetics\, the artist has transformed the space of the gallery in Gillman Barracks into a replica of his own HDB apartment\, an immersive installation that mimics its lush opulence and intimate atmosphere. The show\, curated by Louis Ho\, takes its title from the unit number of Johann’s apartment\, and includes works ranging from large-scale landscape paintings to small still-life images\, from ornate furnishings and artifacts to kitschy ceramic sculptures. The interlacing of artwork\, found object and furniture highlights the artist’s appropriation of European visual and material cultures as a means of questioning\, and destabilizing\, the historical power structures they represent\, especially in the context of a former colony in Southeast Asia. The ostentatious excess of the presentation is transformed by the presence of one of the primary thematic concerns of Johann’s practice: the recuperation of the Malay-Muslim cultural universe. The act of appropriation\, in his hands\, becomes a channel of critical counter-colonization\, usurping the prerogatives of Western culture to highlight systemic erasure and marginalization.

SUMMARY:What Makes A Mountain by Yeoh Choo Kuan
DESCRIPTION:Richard Koh Fine Art (RKFA) is pleased to announce two solo exhibitions of Malaysian artists\, Yeoh Choo Kuan (b. 1988) and Zac Lee (b. 1968). The exhibitions are titled What Makes A Mountain and Another Day respectively. They are scheduled to run from 7 – 19 January 2023 at Richard Koh Fine Art Singapore\, Blk 47 Malan Road\, #01-26 Gillman Barracks\, Singapore 109444. \n\n\n\n\nIn What Makes A Mountain\, Yeoh Choo Kuan explores “Shan Shui”\, branching from his Streaming Mountain series where his ‘paint streaming’ technique is employed as the element of “Shui” (water). The individual paintings are configured in an assorted format which are then placed in varying heights. The variation of heights mimic the layers and rhythm of mountain ridges\, aligning with the idea of “Shan” (mountain). Through the process of paint dripping from different directions\, the various gestures allow Yeoh the freedom to create and experience dynamics within each scene. To him\, the process of making art and a mountain are the same\, both challenge one’s perspective in understanding things differently and one must endure trials for things to be made right.

SUMMARY:Another Day by Zac Lee
DESCRIPTION:Richard Koh Fine Art (RKFA) is pleased to announce two solo exhibitions of Malaysian artists\, Yeoh Choo Kuan (b. 1988) and Zac Lee (b. 1968). The exhibitions are titled What Makes A Mountain and Another Day respectively. They are scheduled to run from 7 – 19 January 2023 at Richard Koh Fine Art Singapore\, Blk 47 Malan Road\, #01-26 Gillman Barracks\, Singapore 109444. \n\n\n\n\nIn Another Day\, Zac Lee presents a body of work that centres around the everyday\, depicting the most routine of acts and finding joy within them. Using sombre and bleak hues\, this helps further illustrate the paintings’ uneventfulness and normality such as picking up a book that was put down from the night before\, a quick sketching session\, a Sunday afternoon. To him\, everyday life is valuable — the bad times\, the good times\, everything in between\, and everything that comes before and after. Today’s ending simply means tomorrow’s beginning. At the works’ core\, it is Lee’s way of magnifying these vignettes of life onto the canvases\, celebrating their simplicity as he believes that life’s fulfilment is found in these everyday moments.

SUMMARY:Hangover by Phuc Thien Hoang
DESCRIPTION:Richard Koh Fine Art (RKFA) is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of Vietnamese artist\, Phuc Thien Hoang (b. 1995). The exhibition is curated by David Willis\, titled Hangover. It is scheduled to run from 3 – 22 December 2022 at Richard Koh Fine Art Singapore\, Blk 47 Malan Road\, #01-26 Gillman Barracks\, Singapore 109444. \nThe exhibition Hangover constitutes a selection of paintings by the young Ho Chi Minh City based artist Phuc Thien Hoang\, working in acrylic\, oil\, and mixed media. This is his first exhibition outside of Vietnam\, and his second solo exhibition to date. Most of these canvases are bustling with figures—drinking\, puking\, kissing\, dreaming—and the viewer becomes a bit of a voyeur\, looking out from behind the eyes of the artist as he surveys the crowd. \nThe paintings take us into a dream world where the mundane interactions of daily life are imbued with the exaggerated intensity of mythical conflict. What we see in many of these works (such as the eponymous triptych Hangover) is a sober person’s perspective on a drunken scene. Alternatively\, the still life Summer Fruits offers a break from the maddening crowd—consider it a glimpse of the morning after the hangover\, when the headache is all gone.
