DESCRIPTION:The Objectifs Documentary Award champions Objectifs’ mission to broaden perspectives through image making\, by supporting original voices in visual storytelling in Singapore and the wider region. The Award enables photographers to work on new or existing projects\, encouraging them to tell stories about their native communities. It welcomes different creative approaches to non-fiction storytelling\, from conventional documentary photography to visual experiments. Projects may be presented in still images or use multimedia. \nSuccessful recipients will be given professional and financial support to work on their projects over a 6 month-long period. The final works will exhibited at Objectifs in May 2025. The recipient will work with curator Goh Sze Ying to curate and present a solo exhibition at Objectifs in May 2025\, and SGD$8\,000 to work on a new or existing body of work. \nOne finalist will receive a grant of SGD$1\,000 to continue their practice. \n2) Emerging Category\nThe Emerging Category will be awarded to 2 recipients from Southeast Asia. Each recipient receives a 6 month-long mentorship with Jessica Lim\, Director of Angkor Photo Festival & Workshops\, a presentation at Objectifs in May 2025\, and SGD$3\,000 to work on a new or existing body of work. \nOne finalist will receive a grant of SGD$500 to continue their practice. \nRecipients will receive production and logistical support from Objectifs for the exhibition. Completed works will be promoted on Objectifs’ website and social media channels. If the recipient is not based in Singapore\, they will receive financial support for budget flights and accommodation to attend the setting up of and opening of the exhibition and conduct an artist talk/presentation. \n  \nSELECTION PANEL  \nA panel of five jury members will review the application materials. DESCRIPTION:An exhibition by Mark Chua and Lam Li Shuen \n4 to 28 Apr 2024\nObjectifs Lower Gallery 2 \nOpening: Thu 4 Apr 2024\, 7pm – 9pm\nFree admission \nRelated events\nAnalog Filmmaking: The Basics and Experimentations (Please register here)\nDate & Time: Sat 27 Apr\, 2pm – 6pm\nLocation: Objectifs Workshop Space\nFee: $80 (General admission) | $50 (participants aged 35 and under)\nThis workshop is supported by the National Youth Fund (NYF). \nSilhouettes of Having Been is an exhibition by Mark Chua and Lam Li Shuen\, devised as a response to the site of Objectifs Centre for Photography and Film. Focusing on fallen hair strands as a central material\, it is a reflection and turning of attention toward physical presences and the possibilities in being together between time and images. The invisible becomes visible and the minute becomes magnificent as teeming lines are silhouetted against light. \nOver a period of time\, fallen hair strands by people passing through Objectifs were collected. The hair strands were adhered to film loops running through 16mm and Super 8 projectors\, in a live expanded cinema performance taking place before the exhibition. This was done alongside live modifications of the performed film with ink and lenticular interventions\, in combination with an improvisational soundscape with the film loops prepared as percussive elements. As a result\, the film loops were physically altered by the live process\, creating a unique\, unrepeatable moving image piece that forms the core of the exhibition. \nIn the exhibition\, Chua and Lam wish to invite an encounter with the materiality and speculative fictions of fallen hair as a bodily response which silently traces our existences. What do they say and express\, these silhouettes of having been? \nAbout Mark Chua and Lam Li Shuen \nMark Chua and Lam Li Shuen are a Singaporean filmmaker and artist duo. Their films explore existential anxiety\, alienation\, and histories\, often using surrealistic imagery\, bizarre narratives\, and body horror as social commentary. \nTheir films have screened at international film festivals\, including the International Film Festival Rotterdam (2023)\, New Directors/New Films (2023)\, and BFI London Film Festival (2021). In 2021\, they were awarded Best Southeast Asian Director at the Singapore International Film Festival for their short film A Man Trembles. Their short film\, The Cup also received the First Prize (Moving Images) of the Julius Baer Next Generation Art Prize in 2021. \nThey are currently developing their upcoming feature film The Want\, which was selected to participate in Berlinale Talents Script Station 2024\, mylab+@Jogja 2023 and Talents Tokyo 2023.

SUMMARY:[open Call] Objectifs x Momo Short Film Incubator 2024
DESCRIPTION:The Objectifs x Momo Short Film Incubator is an initiative that focuses on developing short film scripts. The programme is open to Southeast Asian filmmakers working with moving images\, and will provide five selected participants with mentorship and a valuable support network as they work on their scripts. \nThe Objectifs x Momo Film Co Short Film Incubator will run from 4 July – 25 August 2024*. SUMMARY:Guided Photowalk: Discover Tanglin Halt & Wessex Estate
DESCRIPTION:Visually document and juxtapose different sights of Singaporean ‘heritage’ in this photowalk that will wind through Tanglin Halt and Wessex Estate. \nDuration\n2h over 1 session \nCourse Description\nOnce the living quarters of British servicemen from the 1930s to the 1970s\, Wessex Estate still boasts of a unique and idyllic charm that is hard to find elsewhere in Singapore. Lined with black-and-white colonial apartment blocks that are situated next to sprawling fields with their strategically planted trees\, the serene estate not only harkens to the country’s colonial past\, but also the troops’ attempts to transform a piece of Singapore into a place reminiscent of home. \nThis purposefully-crafted route will first take participants through the quickly transforming Tanglin Halt heartlands and parts of the Rail Corridor before arriving at Wessex Estate. Participants will get the opportunity to visually document and juxtapose – not to mention\, contemplate – vastly different sights of local ‘heritage’. After the success of last year’s inaugural edition\, which showcased a range of short films confronting topics spanning from the absurd to the nuances of everyday life\, the FreshTake!  Open Call is back again to uncover even more varied perspectives from the next generation of filmmakers! \nSelected films will be screened at Objectifs in August 2024\, accompanied by talks and post-screening discussions. \nThis programme is held in conjunction with the Objectifs x Momo Film Co Short Film Incubator 2024. \nAPPLICATION CRITERIA \n1. If this population made up a country\, it would be the 15th largest on the planet. \nThis is one of the foremost challenges facing society in the 21st Century. Economic and political instability\, human caused climate change and the interconnectedness of the modern world are all key drivers of migration. Refugees are among the most vulnerable\, migrating because they have little or no choice but to do so. \nThe large and growing community of refugees and other displaced people is spread widely around the globe. “Threads” features photographs taken in over 20 countries\, focusing on the people impacted by these systemic drivers of the refugee crisis\, emphasizing our shared humanity with those who find themselves in very difficult circumstances. \nAbout the Artist \nAlexander Treves has photographed refugees and other displaced people in over 20 countries.  He aims to use photography not just to document issues that he cares about\, but also to raise awareness and money to assist with the underlying problems. Proceeds from sales of his books “Glimpses Over The Edge” and “Freefall” benefit refugee charities.  He is the recipient of the second prize in the Hong Kong Human Rights Arts Prize\, 2021. He is employed as a finance professional.

A key element to improving one’s photography skills lies in learning how to control and manipulate light\, not only to adjust brightness\, but also create an intended tone\, mood\, and atmosphere. \nIn this workshop\, you will get to explore how to make the best use of natural lighting when it comes to portraiture\, in both indoor and outdoor settings. The notion of timestream draws upon the parallels between our perception of ‘time’ and the nature of a ‘stream’ – both continually moving forward and never stops.\nWhat if there is a space where this stream flows into and accumulates into a reservoir? A reservoir of time. A space with tributaries from across different points of the timestream flowing in at different rates\, where the past\, present\, and future exist simultaneously. \nManifested as a site that exists across the continuum of time\, artists Lewis Choo\, Ge Xiaocong\, Goh Chun Aik\, Hong Shu-ying\, and Ivan Ong bring together their individual understanding of time through their artworks – seemingly each representing a different tributary – creating encounters that strive to influence our experience of time. The images and objects presented suggest a collection of memories\, traces of activity\, possibilities from across the time-space and even alternative timelines; resulting in an overlapping of timelines that prompts us to re-examine our perception of time. \nConceptualised as an exploration into our relationship with time through an artistic lens\, the exhibition and its artworks strive to offer opportunities for us to consider alternative ways of thinking about time.

DESCRIPTION:Dancing on Paper by Jane Goh is an exploration of abstract nude female drawings rendered in the mediums of Chinese ink\, crayons and acrylic. This exhibition invites you to embark on a journey into the boundless realm of femininity\, where form meets abstraction and lines converge to celebrate the sheer beauty of the female body. \nHer works captivate with their delicate dance between abstraction and representation. With each stroke\, the artist evokes a symphony of emotions\, echoing the complexity and diversity of womanhood. \nThis is a fundraiser exhibition. All proceeds will go towards the Objectifs’ 20th Anniversary Fundraiser. \nAbout the Artist \nJane Goh (b. 1947) embarked on her artistic journey at 50\, when she took up a part time figure drawing course at LASALLE College of the Arts under the guidance of Mr. Sawn Huang\, an abstract art enthusiast. Her passion for drawing grew as she continued to draw weekly with her peers at Substation. This lasted for 2 years and they named themselves the ‘Mark-makers’ group whereby they organised group exhibitions\, selling their works to raise funds for different charities. Jane then learnt to paint with watercolour for 1 year at Tanjong Pagar Community Centre. Since 2018\, she has been painting regularly with a group of great friends\, which included professional artists and enthusiasts\, at her office on alternate Saturday mornings to horn her craft. \nInspired by her friend\, Wai Fong\, she developed a unique style of painting\, blending abstraction and distortion. Jane’s art is a therapeutic exploration of flow\, gesture\, and freedom\, appreciating the creative endurance of her models.

The course will wrap up with a session on Adobe Lightroom\, where participants will get to try out the photo editing software on Objectifs’ iMacs. \nIf you’re deciding whether or not to pick up photography as a long-term hobby\, this workshop is a perfect opportunity for you to find out! This two-week long mentorship programme encourages them to explore and experiment with image-based work\, and deepen their understanding of the creative and professional possibilities in photography. The programme was formerly known as the Shooting Home Youth Awards. \nParticipants will have the opportunity to learn from some of the region’s foremost visual storytellers as mentors and guest lecturers. How do portrait photographers manage their workflow on a shoot and build portfolios to get the assignments they want? \nIn this highly hands-on workshop\, participants will get the rare opportunity to hear and learn from renowned and award-winning photographer\, Muhammad Fadli (National Geographic\, TIME\, The New York Times\, NIKE\, and more)\, who will be on a weekend stopover in Singapore for the Objectifs Documentary Award 2022 showcase as one of its mentors. \nAt the end of the portrait photography course\, participants will learn the makings of good portraiture\, how to work with lights both indoors and outdoors\, what can and cannot be fixed in post-processing\, as well as how to embark on the professional portrait photographer’s journey.

Nearly four years on\, she continues to battle her inner demons. Yong Li Xuan has been documenting Ashley’s journey since September 2021\, after they met in a mental health support group online. \nAccording to a Singapore Mental Health Study conducted in 2016\, one in seven in Singapore have experienced a mental disorder in their lifetime but more than three-quarters did not seek professional help. Evidence that youths in Singapore are experiencing difficulties with their mental well-being is mounting\, and there is a growing awareness that more resources are needed to tackle this issue. \nFighting Demons is an intimate portrait of Ashley’s relationships – with friends\, family and herself – and how they intertwine with her mood disorders. Through this project\, she lets her walls down\, in the hopes that others will empathise and open up about mental health issues.

DESCRIPTION:A project by Jomar Tingson (the Philippines)\nRecipient of the Objectifs Documentary Award 2022\, Emerging Category\nMentored by Muhammad Fadli \nCourtyard Space\, Objectifs\n31 Mar to 7 May 2023\nFree admission \nExhibition Opening: 30 Mar 2023\, 12pm – 9pm \nArtist Talk with Jomar Tingson and Muhammad Fadli | 1 Apr 2023\, 4.30pm – 5.30pm \nRSVP here: docuaward-palaboy.peatix.com \nSince April 2022\, photographer Jomar Tingson has been photographing communities in Paete\, Laguna\, in the Philippines. Initially drawn to the performances of The Centurion Original\, a local theatre group that performs the dramatization of the Passion of Christ each year during Holy Week\, Tingson soon began expanding the scope of his project to include wider aspects of the town’s spiritual and religious beliefs. \nPaete is derived from paet\, the Tagalog name for chisel\, which points to the town’s reputation as the woodcarving capital of the Philippines. Catholic wooden statues from Paete grace churches and museums across the country\, a testament to the skill of its craftsmen\, and the town’s devotion to spirituality and religion. Expressions of faith in Paete frequently meld local folklore with Catholicism; these practices are reflective of the complex histories\, identities and cultures that influence the often syncretic nature of religiosity across the country. \nTingson’s exploration of the tension between modernity and tradition\, colonialism and native identity\, speak to his own journey in coming to terms with family lore\, personal histories and identity. It is an exercise of faith and curiosity; a reconciliation of past and present\, wonder and devotion.
