SUMMARY:New Works by JUstin Lee & Shih Yun Yeo + Cryptoflora Collaboration Series
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition showcases three distinct series: New monoprints by local artist Justin Lee\, New works on paper by local artist Shih Yun Yeo and their recent collaboration series on paper and canvases “CryptoFlora” created in 2023. \nEmbark on a journey into the world of art and the blossoming blockchain with the CryptoFlora Collaboration Art Series\, created by Justin Lee and Yeo Shih Yun. Inspired by the concept of Crypto Flora\, where blockchain technology flourishes\, they invite you to witness the convergence of art and innovation. \nIn this collaboration\, Shih Yun’s contemporary design sensibilities harmoniously blend with Lee’s iconic style\, resulting in a unique fusion of modern and traditional influences. Together\, they explore objective and non-representational art\, showcasing their combined expertise as both designers and artists. \nInspired by the Chinese proverb ‘不以规则，不能成方圆’ \, the new series  ‘Without rules\, there are no Boundaries.’ monoprints by Justin Lee delves into the interplay of lines\, shapes\, colors\, and gestural marks\, transcending the confines of visual reality. Each abstract\, organic form within the series serves as a vessel for evocative narratives; perhaps resembling a rugged rock face or emanating the vibrant energy of transformation. \nAs Justin Lee navigates the digital age\, his practice is a testament to both devotion and conflict. While he ardently engages in the act of creation\, seeking to communicate through the language of dots\, lines\, and shapes\, there exists a profound struggle between pleasure and discord. This tension\, inherent in his process\, defies complete articulation through conventional language\, inviting viewers to embark on a journey of interpretation and introspection. \nIn her old studio at Herencia in 2022\,  Shih Yun bids farewell to a chapter of her creative journey with the completion of her quadriptych series\, “ Infinite Green’. Executed in her signature bold and dynamic style\, these pieces pulsate with energy\, capturing the essence of movement with every brushstroke. Through the juxtaposition of tradition and innovation\, Shih Yun invites viewers to contemplate the rich tapestry of artistic expression\, finding beauty in both the understated elegance of her ink paintings and the vibrant intensity of her quadriptych. \nIn November 2023\, Yeo Shih Yun embarked on a three-week retreat to the tranquil landscapes of Itoshima\, Japan. Amidst this serene backdrop\, she meticulously crafted a series of works on paper\, each stroke a testament to her profound admiration for the timeless interplay of ink and paper. With a restrained palette and humble brushes\, she explored the delicate balance between simplicity and complexity\, infusing each piece with a sense of meditative tranquility. \nIn both series\, Shih Yun’s artistic vision shines through\, transcending mere visual representation to evoke a profound sense of emotion and contemplation.

SUMMARY:Yeo Shih Yun 墨非 : DEFY INK The Collectors’ Showcase
DESCRIPTION:Yeo Shih Yun墨非 : DEFY INK is a semi-retrospective exhibition charting the artist’s early works collected by 5 ardent patrons of art at the Singapore Art Week 2024. It marks a milestone as the artist reflects upon the essence of her early artistic endeavours while anticipating the boundless possibilities ahead in her new studio. Inspired by the aleatoric approach of John Cage’s compositions\, ‘ink’ goes beyond a mark under Shih Yun’s persistence in redefining the boundaries of ink as her emblem of art-making. \nVenue: 39 Keppel Rd\, #03-10 Tanjong Pagar Distripark\, Singapore 089065\nExhibition duration: 17 Jan – 4 Feb 2024\, Wed – Sun\, 1 – 8pm (19 & 26 Jan\, 1 – 10pm)\nCurator Tour: 20 Jan\, 27 Jan & 3 Feb 2024\, 2pm at the exhibition venue (Book tickets here)\nWebsite: https://www.shihyunyeo.com/ \nInspired by the words of John Cage who aptly noted that ‘the world\, the real\, is not an object. It is a process’\, 墨非 : DEFY INK embodies the spirit of an ongoing and dynamic process in art making. The exhibition delves into the nascent years of Shih-Yun’s art practice\, where ink evolves from a mere mark to a note in a rhythmic composition\, ultimately transforming into an instrument of her audacious creative rebellion. 墨非 : DEFY INK is a collectors’ showcase curated by Arielle Lau with selected works from the collections of Koh Seow Chuan\, Toh Ee Loong\, Low Nguan Kiang and Esmund Chua. \nThe exhibition presents more than 20 works\, including some never-before-exhibited pieces\, shedding light on her formative years through the collections of five patrons who supported her early artistic expressions. The featured works highlight Shih Yun’s innovative approach of art-making including collaborative paintings with fellow artist Wyn-Lyn (Exit series\, 2005)\, blending traditional ink with elements of serendipity (Conversations with Trees\, 2012)\, as well as her use of robots as a response to the highly digitalised world (The K\, 2010). \nThe showcase also underscores the vital role of art collectors in shaping the evolving art ecosystem. In an age dominated by digital experiences\, these paintings stand as a testament to the enduring significance of physical art collections. 墨非: DEFY INK is an invitation to explore the infinite potentialities intrinsic to ink\, as it transcends historical moorings\, assuming an avant-garde role as a dynamic instrument for mark-making in the hands and defiance of Shih Yun.
