SUMMARY:Huayi 2025: Human Condition VIII
DESCRIPTION:After a more than two-decade long domestic run\, celebrated Taiwanese arts icon Wu Nien-jen brings his acclaimed Human Condition theatre series to Huayi for its Singapore premiere. The well-loved series has been enjoyed by over half a million Taiwanese theatregoers so far\, and Human Condition VIII is the latest eagerly anticipated instalment. \nHuman Condition VIII tells the story of Mingcan\, a retiree who finds himself adrift and without a purpose in life. His status as a respected patriarch has long disappeared as his adult children have their own families and lives to deal with. Unable to contribute to the economy and unneeded by his family\, Mingcan questions his self-worth as his dignity slowly fades with each listless\, monotonous day. Just as he feels that he has struck rock-bottom\, he instead strikes the lottery jackpot\, and immediately finds himself to be of interest to his family once more. Mingcan feels respected\, needed\, wanted. But is this unexpected windfall a stroke of luck or a harbinger of misfortune? \nStarting in 2000\, the Human Condition series shines an empathetic spotlight on the day-to-day stories of everyday Taiwanese people who strive to make the best out of what they have in their lives. Presented by Greenray Theatre Company\, the series has continued to garner enthusiastic support and enjoy great appeal since its inception. It has become the first taste of theatre for many across Taiwan\, with each instalment of the series rapidly selling out within days of their launches. \nThe first comedy of the series\, Human Condition VIII is a humorous and poignant tale of masculine self-worth that features an acclaimed cast that includes theatre multi-hyphenate Chen Hsi-Cheng\, and Golden Bell Award winners Wang Juan and Yang Li-yin. \nPlaywright and director Wu Nien-jen is one of the most prolific and respected names in Taiwanese cinema. Debuting in 2001\, the Human Condition series is his blockbuster foray into theatre\, which had been seen and loved by over half a million Taiwanese theatergoers\, and earned him the prestigious National Cultural Award.

SUMMARY:Huayi 2025: The Heart of Jun: Memoirs of Zhaojun
DESCRIPTION:A tale of 20th-century voyagers seeking their destinies\, set against the elegant beauty of traditional Nanyin music. Co-produced with Siong Leng Musical Association\, The Heart of Jun: Memoirs of Zhaojun presents a musical experience of discovery\, courage and determination. \nThree women leave China and set sail for Southeast Asia in the early 20th century\, their voyage echoing the journey of Wang Zhaojun\, one of the legendary Four Beauties of ancient China. Finding themselves on a cargo ship\, they are inescapably embroiled in sinister struggles for power as a mysterious man reveals secrets they have yet to understand. What will their destinies hold? What connection exists between these three women braving a tumultuous sea and Wang Zhaojun\, who rode beyond the borders of Western Han into the Xiongnu empire? Do the fragments of loss and sorrow in Nanyin music symbolise the life stories of these modern women\, or do they inspire courage to explore new horizons? \n  \nThis fusion of traditional Nanyin music and contemporary theatre will delight both Nanyin purists and new audiences. Siong Leng breaks new ground in this collaboration with celebrated Taiwanese playwright Katherine Hui-ling Chou and Taiwanese director Lee Yi Hsiu\, who is known for his innovative direction of traditional music performances. \nThe Heart of Jun: Memoirs of Zhaojun features authentic traditional Nanyin music harking back half a millennium that narrates the legend of Wang Zhaojun\, with additional music composed by Siong Leng’s music director Ng Kang Kee. The production showcases the principal artists of Siong Leng\, and a skilled ensemble of Eastern and Western classical musicians performing together with Singapore actors Ang Xiao Ting\, Jodi Chan and Hang Qian Chou.

SUMMARY:Rickshaw Boy
DESCRIPTION:Rickshaw Boy narrates the life of Xiangzi\, a rickshaw puller in Beiping during the Republic of China era. A strong and ambitious young man from the countryside\, Xiangzi dreams of building an ideal life through his own efforts. However\, fate repeatedly thwarts his aspirations\, and despite his hard work and determination\, his circumstances remain unchanged. In the context of modern society\, Xiangzi’s helplessness and confusion reflect the struggles of modern workers caught in similar cycles of hardship. \nLao She is widely celebrated as a “Master of Language”\, with his works both entertaining and deeply rooted in the local culture of Beijing. Rickshaw Boy is among Lao She’s most renowned masterpieces. It presents a tragic story laced with humour\, using Beijing dialect and expressions to vividly portray the resilience\, pride\, and underlying pain of his characters. Director Fang Xu\, often regarded as a “Lao She specialist\,” has adapted Lao She’s works for the stage numerous times with his distinctive expressive and interpretative style. In this production\, Fang Xu reimagines the original text through a contemporary lens\, incorporating modern aesthetics into the stage design\, lighting\, music\, and visual composition. \nWhile the tragic struggles of the rickshaw pullers portrayed in Rickshaw Boy may seem distant to contemporary audiences\, the story also offers a compelling psychological portrait of Xiangzi himself. It delves into the conflict between his ideals and the harsh realities\, alongside the confusion\, frustration\, and helplessness that permeate his inner world – emotions that remain profoundly relatable even today. \nAnother standout feature of this adaptation is its all-male cast\, which boldly challenges traditional gender roles while employing a non-linear\, visually-driven narrative structure to depict Xiangzi’s tragic journey. This innovative approach departs from a straightforward retelling\, offering a rich and layered interpretation. \nOne of the female characters\, Tigress\, is portrayed by Zhao Zhen\, a nationally acclaimed Chinese actor with extensive theatre experience\, who brings the role of to life with a commanding portrayal of her domineering and sharp-tongued personality. Another female character\, Xiao Fu Zi\, is portrayed by Ren Yubin\, who is trained in traditional opera Dan roles. He delivers a poignant performance\, capturing the character’s sorrow and timidity with nuance. Siqin Gaowa\, an actress renowned for her iconic portrayal of Tigress in the film adaptation of Rickshaw Boy (1982)\, serves as the artistic advisor for this production. \nThis marks the firs-ever staging of Rickshaw Boy in Singapore and Fang Xu’s debut at the Esplanade. The critically acclaimed all-male cast\, which has captivated audiences in China\, will perform in this groundbreaking production\, making it a must-see event!

They complement and empower each other\, with one symbolising the present and the other the future. \nThere are always two sides to a coin\, two perceptions and two paths to a goal. The challenge\, however\, is to recognise both and for both to coexist. DWITA\, a Sanskrit term for duality\, delves into the balance between material wealth and spiritual knowledge\, invoking the blessings of goddesses Saraswati and Lakshmi. \nSAMVET\nIn SAMVET\, a captivating kathak showcase\, nature’s five elements unite to form a harmonious whole. This balanced convergence awakens our senses\, bringing a profound sense of perfect equilibrium. As these elements merge seamlessly\, they evoke an everlasting bliss that resonates through our heart\, mind\, body and soul. \nFLOWERS OF DEVOTION\nImmerse yourself in the divine beauty of Flowers of Devotion\, a captivating Manipuri dance performance that celebrates the sacred art form’s rich heritage. Rooted in the temple traditions of Manipur\, the performance intertwines the ancient devotional dances of Lai-Haraoba and Raas Lila. This classical dance form is imbued with the devotional themes of Madhura Raas\, portraying the love of Kirshna with goddess Radha and the cowherd damsels of Vrindavan. The dance is characterised by soft body movements along with peaceful facial expressions known as Bhakti Rasa\, the emotion of devotion. \nTICKETS & PRICES\nStandard – $35\nConcession – $28

SUMMARY:Samsara – A Cine-Concert
DESCRIPTION:What is one willing to give up to fulfil their insatiable desires? \n  \nFollowing the internationally acclaimed Setan Jawa—which premiered in 2017 to a sold-out crowd at Esplanade—respected Indonesian director Garin Nugroho returns for the world premiere of Samsara\, a stunning cinematic experience that marries film with live music. \n  \nSamsara follows the story a man from an impoverished family who is rejected by the wealthy parents of the woman he loves. He strikes a bargain with the Monkey King\, performing a dark ritual to gain wealth but in the process\, curses his wife and child into suffering.  Rooted in Indonesian mysticism\, this is a universal narrative about the insatiable hunger to be what one is not\, and the boundaries one is prepared to breach to realise this. \n  \nLike its predecessor Setan Jawa\, Samsara is a “cine-concert” that draws from German black-and-white films from the 1920s as well as wayang kulit (traditional Indonesian shadow puppetry). While the former featured an evocative silent film accompanied by live gamelan music and a Western classical orchestra\, Samsara forgoes the orchestra for vibrant\, live electronic music. The production marries this electronic soundscape with traditional Balinese performance elements like the gamelan orchestra\, traditional dance\, masks and wayang kulit. The film and live performance stars two Asia-Pacific luminaries of the stage and screen\, Indonesian film actor Ario Bayu and Indonesian-Australian dancer Juliet Widyasari Burnett. \n  \nUnder the bold visionary eye of Garin Nugroho and the exceptional work of a powerhouse creative team\, Samsara promises to be a bold and memorable cinematic experience\, seamlessly bringing together the art forms\, nuances\, and traditions of Indonesia’s past and present. \n  \nProduction Credits\nLead Actors: Ario Bayu & Juliet Widyasari Burnett\nSupporting Actors: Gus Bang Sada\, Valentine Payen-Wicaksono\, Siko Setyanto\, I Wayan Wira Kusuma\, Aryani Willems & Cok Sawitri \n  \nDirector: Garin Nugroho\nMusic Composer: Wayan Sudirana & Gabber Modus Operandi\nMusicians: Gabber Modus Operandi & Gamelan Yuganada \n  \nA commission by Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay\nProduced by Cineria Films\, Garin Workshop & Lynx Films\nWith the support of Ministry of Culture\, Research and Technology Republic of Indonesia and Yayasan Puri Kauhan Ubud \n  \nProducer: Gita Fara & Aldo Swastia\nExecutive Producer: Ario Bayu & Rob O’Hare\nSupervising Producer: Jala Adolphus\nChoreographer: Ida Ayu Wayan Arya Satyani\nCinematographer: Batara Goempar\nCostume Designer: Retno Ratih Damayanti\nProduction Designer: Vida Sylvia\nStage Designer: Iskandar Loedin\nSound Recordist and Designer: Trisno\nEditor: Beck\nCo-producers: Rai Pendet\, Batara Goempar\nLine Producer: Ineke Bajalaras

SUMMARY:Mali Bucha: Dance Offering by Kornkarn Rungsawang (Thailand)
DESCRIPTION:Cross material and virtual worlds with up-and-coming choreographer Kornkarn Rungsawang in this ritual-inspired performance that combines dance\, augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR). Rum Kea Bon is an ancient ritual performed at shrines and temples in Thailand where dance is used as a tool for negotiation by humans towards higher beings in a bid to make wishes come true. The charming dancer\, hired as a messenger to access higher beings\, enhances the likelihood of one’s wish fulfilment. \nInspired by this ritual\, Kornkarn created Mali Bucha: Dance Offering\, a hybrid constellation of augmented reality\, virtual reality and dance. This immersive and participatory iteration of Rum Kea Bon crosses between physical and immaterial worlds\, with a digital shrine accessible through AR and VR throughout the duration of the performance. Audience members will be able to view\, make wishes and offer flowers to the digital shrine\, with VR headsets present on site for audiences. \nKornkarn thus acts as an interface between the material plane (the real-time audience) and the digital realm (the virtual shrine)\, communicating individual wishes and thanksgiving to higher beings through dance. Flowing as a current throughout Mali Bucha is a belief system that concerns itself with duality—economics and ecology\, image and sound\, old and new\, the mundane and the transcendent. \nThis performance marks the full-length premiere of Mali Bucha: Dance Offering\, after being workshopped at various leading platforms in Asia and Europe\, such as Dance Nucleus in Singapore\, Kinosaki International Arts Centre in Japan\, and Tanz Kongress in Germany. As a dancer\, Kornkarn has spent years performing with the renowned Pichet Klunchun and training in both classical and contemporary dance forms. Now as a dancemaker to watch\, she continues to bridge the traditional and contemporary\, reflecting modern cultural impulses of this generation. \nMali Bucha: Dance Offering is commissioned by Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay. \nThis production is presented as part of da:ns focus – Connect Asia Now (CAN)\, a weekend that spotlights contemporary dance works by Asian artists focusing on distinct voices and creative impulses from the region.

SUMMARY:Lapse by Melati Suryodarmo (Indonesia)
DESCRIPTION:Known for her bold\, durational solo performances\, acclaimed Indonesian visual and performance artist Melati Suryodarmo premieres Lapse\, a new dance creation performed by collaborators from Indonesia\, Taiwan and Singapore. \nFirst released as two short films\, this iteration marks the live performance premiere of Lapse. Here\, Suryodarmo dives into the metamorphic constellation of body and environment through evocative\, visceral imagery suspended in factual absurdity. With sound design and live music by Yuen Chee Wai from Singapore music collective The Observatory\, Suryodarmo orchestrates movement patterns that steer the group of performers to connect by failures while collectively attempting a new structure and alchemy of senses. \nDrawing inspiration from by-products of chaos and situations that represent a gradual decline in the efficiency\, stability\, and overall functioning of society\, Lapse signifies a transition from a state of order and coherence to one of disorder and confusion. Within this deep-rooted turbulence\, Suryodarmo points to the symptomatic nature of systemic breakdowns\, ethical decline and societal disillusionment of our time. While lapses in society begin to manifest through the decay of behaviour\, diminishing social cohesion\, ruptured institutions and the disintegration of moral frameworks\, the work investigates the unpredictable space between reality and a vision of collective commitment towards change. \nLapse by Melati Suryodarmo is commissioned by Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay. \nThis production is presented as part of da:ns focus – Connect Asia Now (CAN)\, a weekend that spotlights contemporary dance works by Asian artists focusing on distinct voices and creative impulses from the region.

SUMMARY:Mari Kita Main Wayang
DESCRIPTION:Hijinks and humour abound in Mari Kita Main Wayang (Let’s Stage A Play)! \nThis play-within-a-play follows a group of Peranakans who come together to stage Empat Bini\, an ambitious script that is set within the illustrious walls of a royal court. However\, all is not as it seems—as the play unfolds\, a gripping narrative of power gone awry among the players comes to light. \nPresented in Baba Melayu and peppered with familiar expressions\, Mari Kita Main Wayang is a love letter to the rich Peranakan cultural heritage deeply rooted in Singapore. It pays homage to the under-appreciated art form of Peranakan theatre\, while highlighting the significance of having this heritage represented on stage. Witness the revival of this tradition and be transported to a bygone era where the past meets the present. \nFirst staged in 1994\, this adaptation of Felix Chia’s script is comedic\, unique and utterly captivating—look forward to witty banter\, dramatic storytelling and masterful performances by the cast!

SUMMARY:Raga 2023: ABHIPSAA – A Seeking
DESCRIPTION:Photo credit to Arun Kumar \n“A performer of exquisite grace and technique.” – The New Yorker \n“[Satpathy] may be five-foot-two\, but she dances like a giant.” Marina Harss\, Dance Magazine \nMesmerising and immersive\, ABHIPSAA – A Seeking charts a personal journey of discovery in physical\, emotional\, and spiritual realms. In four choreographic works\, revered dance doyen Bijayini Satpathy expands the parameters of the formal and representational norms of the odissi tradition through both narrative and non-narrative dances\, reimagining classical odissi forms through her own interpretation. \n  \nThis work was first premiered in Dec 2021 across two sold-out two evenings at Duke Performances. This critical success\, a dramatic exploration and reshaping of an ancient tradition\, catapulted Satpathy to the forefront of the field. After decades of performance and study\, Satpathy calls upon deep kinetic and emotional insights to evolve a revered cultural art form into an entirely modern expression. \nThis work was made possible with additional funding from the New England Foundation for the Arts’ National Dance Project\, with lead funding from the Doris Duke Foundation and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. This presentation at Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay marks its Asian debut. \n  \nConsidered one of the foremost masters of odissi in the world\, Bijayini Satpathy has enjoyed a vast career as principal dancer\, master teacher\, and respected scholar.  Renowned the world over for her grace\, Satpathy embodies the spirit and profound storytelling of classical Indian dance in a way few others have achieved. \nSatpathy has been hailed by the likes of New Yorker\, Dance Magazine and international press around the world for her unparalleled artistic expression. Her passion for odissi was instilled at age seven with teachers at Orissa Dance Academy. She is one of the most recognisable names in Indian dance today in large part due to her 25-year career with the famed Nrityagram Dance Ensemble.  She studied and perfected odissi with Nrityagram as performer and principal dancer from 1993 to 2018. \n  \nIn 2021\, she was commissioned by Duke University and the Baryshnikov Arts Center for her solo presentation\, ABHIPSAA – a seeking\, which premiered in New York across two sold out evenings at the Baryshnikov Arts Center\, and is currently being toured around the world. She was the Artist-in-Residence with the Metropolitan Museum of Art for the 2021-22 season. \nWebsite: https://www.bijayinisatpathy.com/\nInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/bijayinisatpathy/\nFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100063693040832
