SUMMARY:Jazz in July: The Legendary Johnny O’Neal Quartet
DESCRIPTION:After five decades as a pianist\, vocalist\, and entertainer\, Johnny O’Neal stands as a true jazz master. A 2025 Jazz Legacies Fellow\, his storied career includes collaborations with Ray Brown\, Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers\, and Sarah Vaughan\, a Carnegie Hall debut opening for Oscar Peterson\, and induction into the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame. Largely self-taught\, O’Neal’s virtuosic\, swinging style draws from Oscar Peterson\, Art Tatum\, and Barry Harris\, fused with his own melodic flair. Whether scatting\, blues shouting\, or delivering soulful ballads\, no two performances are ever the same. A beloved fixture on the New York jazz scene and a mentor to rising talent\, O’Neal bridges the golden era of jazz with its ever-evolving future. His shows are rich in spontaneity\, lyricism\, and deep musical conversation—proof that true legends don’t just preserve tradition; they keep it alive and thriving. \nFeaturing:\nGuitar – Raphael Silverman\nBass – Joey Ranieri\nDrums – Itay Morchi

SUMMARY:Porcelain Shield\, Paper Sword Album Launch
DESCRIPTION:“[Mary Sue]’s lo-fi hip-hop\, heavy on noise-flecked loops and light on conventional song structures\, is a far cry from the glossily produced trap- and R&B-influenced sounds many rappers in the city-state gravitate to. If they’re emulating Drake and Travis Scott\, Mary Sue’s heroes are MF DOOM and Earl Sweatshirt; if they’re aiming for Spotify playlist placements\, Mary Sue celebrates a spot on Bandcamp’s front page.”\n– Karen Gwee \n “As a rapper and producer\, Mary Sue—generally called Sue by listeners—proved himself as one of the most promising voices of the current underground hip-hop scene with his 2022 debut album Kisses of Life\, inspired by the death of one of his heroes\, MF DOOM. Woozy\, crunchy samples\, inward-looking\, self-reflective lyricism\, and lavish\, stylish production drove that album.”\n– Reece Beckett \nGamelan phrases melt into smoky brass\, spectral melodies unravel over off-kilter drums: Porcelain Shield and Paper Sword\, the latest record by Mary Sue and the Clementi Sound Appreciation Club\, is both a reckoning and a dream. \nKnown for his left-of-centre sound and charismatic flows drawn from a deep appreciation and understanding of the hip hop genre\, Singaporean rapper-producer Mary Sue presents a one-night-only performance to celebrate this album with his five-piece live band\, the Clementi Sound Appreciation Club. You’re invited to join them on an abstract hip hop journey where tradition and modernity blur\, fusing Southeast Asian texture with live jazz\, blues and soul across hypnotic instrumentation\, fractured beats and shifting rhythms. At the album’s core is the tale of a time-traveling oracle\, lost in the contradictions of the present—where meaning dilutes\, spirituality performs\, and the past collides with an uncertain future. \nSupporting the night are local indie mainstays sub:shaman and Malaysian boombap rapper Glazed Baguette with his crew\, Blanco Music.

SUMMARY:Flipside 2025: Gibbon
DESCRIPTION:★★★★\n“Seriously interesting and wryly amusing”\n– The Guardian \n  \n“The combination of mesmerising manipulation and dry comedy left me wanting more”\n– Circus Diaries \n  \n“…an absorbing and entertaining work achieved through a powerful combination of technical skill and performance chemistry”\n– Resolution \n  \nDevastatingly slick and wonderfully thought-provoking\, Gibbon fuses dance\, physical theatre and juggling to explore the absurd and comedic connections between human behaviours. \n  \nCo-produced by Olivier Award-winning Gandini Juggling and breakout stars Chris Patfield and José Triguero\, Gibbon is a surreal and charming feast of juggling choreography with a sense of humour and a hint of absurdity. The production captivates with a powerful combination of technical skill and performance chemistry.  Achieving success while masking failure\, the narrative is formed when the action cuts between the creation and the execution of hypnotic patterns and juggling movement sequences. \n  \nGibbon takes inspiration from the world of dance\, innovating choreographically and conceptually\, mixing different art forms with juggling and exploring ideas through movement and devised theatre to create a surreal and touching atmosphere. Patfield and Triguero capture the tension of gravity defiance\, combining the inevitable speed of an object falling with the slow movement of intertwined arms and hands. \n  \nPoetic and comedic\, Gibbon is a unique spectacle that invites you to marvel equally at the depth of thought and the proficiency of its performers.

SUMMARY:Flipside 2025: Bill's 44th
DESCRIPTION:“…buoyant\, mesmerizing\, joy-inducing…”\n– New York Times \n“This isn’t the birthday that Bill had hoped to have. But for the audience\, his 44th is a gift.”\n– New York Times \n★★★★★\n“A celebration of life\, memory and the passage of time\, brilliantly executed and truly unforgettable.”\n– One4Review \n“Manjuck and James have created a show that evolves from this gentle comedy\, with its absurdist elements\, to this touchingly heartfelt reflective piece about [loneliness] and truly finding yourself and loving that person you discover.”\n– The New Current \nThe streamers are hung\, the punch has been spiked\, and the cake is just begging to be eaten! Now\, all Bill has to do is wait for his guests to arrive. \nCreated and puppeteered by Dorothy James and Andy Manjuck\, Bill’s 44th is a non-verbal\, comedic puppet show for adults performed with an original score\, centered on one very worried leading man\, Bill. Many styles of puppetry\, raucous balloons\, and a cheeky piece of crudité all collide to examine the pitfalls of impatience\, the wonder of loneliness\, and the universal passage of time. \nWant to learn from the experts themselves? Check out Andy and Dorothy’s Puppetry Performance Workshop\, perfect for theatre practitioners and students to enhance their skills.

SUMMARY:Mosaic Music Series: Beach Fossils
DESCRIPTION:Rising to prominence in the 2010s amidst a surge of left-of-center indie pop\, Beach Fossils quickly amassed a loyal cult following thanks to its dreamy\, far-away sound\, grounded by dreary\, realist lyricism. Throughout the last fifteen years\, they have steadily earned their stature as one of the most definitive and enduring bands emerging from the 2010s New York underground. They consistently reach new listeners thanks to the steady evolution of their sound from the DIY solo project of Dustin Payseur to an influential self-produced four-piece dream pop band\, where Payseur is joined by core band members Tommy Davidson (guitar)\, Jack Doyle Smith (bass)\, and Anton Hochheim (drums). \nNow\, after seven years\, this iconic quartet returns to Singapore with new material alongside fan favourite songs\, drawing from beloved albums such as the recently-released Bunny (2023)\, the jangly melancholy of their self-titled 2010 album\, the gritty post-punk inspired Class the Truth (2013)\, and many more. Through tone and mood\, Beach Fossils communicate a coming-of-age narrative of self-discovery. Payseur’s slice-of-life lyrics reflect on depression\, love\, adventure\, loss\, mistakes\, New York City\, friendships coming and going—a mélange of granular pieces in the process of continuing to find yourself.

SUMMARY:Mosaic Music Series: YĪN YĪN
DESCRIPTION:Vibrant\, shimmery and irresistibly groovy\, YĪN YĪN’s cinematic sound has propelled this largely instrumental four-piece band into unexpected global heights. \nHailing from Holland’s southernmost city of Maastricht\, the band first caught the attention of listeners globally by meticulously crafting a unique sound that married psychedelia\, funk\, disco with Asian influences. They first burst onto the scene in 2019 with the Thai psychrock-influenced The Rabbit that Hunts Tigers\, which they performed across several shows to great reception\, including at the famed Lowlands festival. During the pandemic\, the band wrote and recorded The Age of Aquarius\, later released in 2022. Described as spiritual and cosmic\, the record retained the band’s distinct Southeast Asian influence while diving even deeper into dancefloor propulsion and space travel atmospherics. \nYĪN YĪN marked yet another evolution with their 2024 album\, Mount Matsu\, the first record collectively created by all members of the band. Deeply informed by both the imaginative sound waves of the cosmos as well as the earthly musical culture of Japan\, Mount Matsu is infectious\, strangely harmonious and highly energetic. The album’s sound is somewhat of a synthesis of their first two records\, utilising pentatonic scales and vintage synthesisers for their signature sound\, built on a solid foundation of psychedelic disco\, fat global funk\, electronics and tribal experiments. \nMaking their way to Singapore for the first time\, YĪN YĪN invites you into their expansive sonic cosmos: join the fray and let your fantasy run wild\, dance your heart out and ascend Mount Matsu with YĪN YĪN.

SUMMARY:Mosaic Music Series: Luna Li
DESCRIPTION:“Luna has real classical music chops\, and her tracks often have more bubbling under the surface than your usual indie pop.”\n– npr \nEmbarking on her first Asia tour\, the magnetic Luna Li returns to Singapore for her first headlining concert here. \nA wildly talented songwriter\, arranger\, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist\, Luna Li’s sonic universe is a perfect amalgamation of her many talents. Through intricate instrumental melodies and multi-layered arrangements\, the Korean-Canadian artist weaves together a sonic universe of dreamy\, baroque-pop with elements of soft rock\, charming a growing legion of fans with her unique brand of cinematic dream pop. \nHaving first garnered attention online in 2020\, she went on to release her debut EP\, Duality\, featuring the likes of Jay Som\, beabadoobee\, and Dreamer Isioma. This record generated hits such as Afterglow\, Misery Moon and Silver Into Rain\, and garnered a Juno Award nomination for Alternative Album of the Year. This rising star went on to open and tour with the likes of Japanese Breakfast\, Wolf Alice\, and beabadobee. \nBut set against When a Thought Grows Wings\, her debut feels like a stepping stone to her sweet spot. This sophomore album is a snapshot of its creator influx. For the 27-year-old\, born Hannah Bussiere Kim\, the journey was tumultuous\, pivotal and necessary. After splitting with her partner of eight years and leaving her hometown of Toronto for Los Angeles\, she found her world opening in new ways. \nWeaving her harp-rippled\, baroque-pop through with jazz flute and gritty riffs\, the album is a testament to Luna Li’s prowess as a charismatic front person\, songwriter\, arranger and continuously curious multi-instrumentalist. Making her debut at Esplanade for her first headline show in Singapore\, Luna Li is set to sweep audiences off their feet with her undeniable stage presence and unique sonic palette.

SUMMARY:Contemporary Performing Arts Research Residency
DESCRIPTION:Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay invites local and international artists\, curators\, programmers\, writers\, researchers and practitioners across all disciplines in the performing arts to apply for the Contemporary Performing Arts Research Residency\, taking place in Singapore between April and June 2026. In its third edition\, the Contemporary Performing Arts Research Residency is an artistic research development programme by Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay\, supported by the National Arts Council\, Singapore. \nThis fully-funded residency aims to support creative research in contemporary performing arts by providing its residents the time and space for artistic inquiry\, experimentation\, development\, research activities and opportunities for interdisciplinary and transcultural dialogues. The residency welcomes various manners and methodologies of enquiry\, embracing a pluralistic approach towards research that unfolds not only through the written word\, but also includes forms of experimentation with the body\, performed moments\, and other non-traditional systems of knowledge. \nThere is no commitment for residents to create a production during or after the residency. Instead\, residents will be asked to present at least one public programme of their choosing\, developed in conversation with the Esplanade Team. \nThe residency is a duration of between one month to three months long and residents will receive a stipend\, access to a shared-working space\, studios when required\, as well as accommodation and international travel to or from Singapore\, if from abroad. \nThere will be biennial open calls held for applications to the residency and each edition will revolve around a thematic focus conceived to respond to current critical issues in our society. In 2026\, the residency presents the thematic focus This Time. \nResidents are chosen through a Selection Panel comprising leading international curators\, programmers\, academics\, artists and managers. They have been appointed based on their thought-provoking practices\, dynamic networks with practitioners from a wide variety of disciplines and their invaluable knowledge of the performing arts across Singapore\, Asia and beyond. The Selection Panel will also serve as interlocutors in the programme’s development and be available as consultants for all residents.

SUMMARY:Mosaic Music Series: Death From Above 1979
DESCRIPTION:Two decades of absolute electricity culminates in one explosive tour: Beginning in 2024\, Death From Above 1979 (DFA 1979) celebrates the 20th anniversary of their debut LP You’re A Woman\, I’m A Machine\, a genre-bending iconoclastic cult classic that sounds as fresh today as it did in 2004. Dubbed “dance-punk” by the UK press\, their music doesn’t merely suggest\, it commands those who hear it to the grimy\, feverish and dimly-lit dance floor. \nTo celebrate\, the band are playing furiously around the world while endeavouring on a year-long recording project to reinvigorate and honour their iconic flagship album. 20 years is a long time for rock ‘n’ roll\, but the odometer turns slowly for this power duo. As explosive as ever\, DFA 1979 summons their fans to the pit to revel in their uniquely infectious\, high-octane rock n’ roll.

SUMMARY:Huayi 2025: Human Condition VIII
DESCRIPTION:After a more than two-decade long domestic run\, celebrated Taiwanese arts icon Wu Nien-jen brings his acclaimed Human Condition theatre series to Huayi for its Singapore premiere. The well-loved series has been enjoyed by over half a million Taiwanese theatregoers so far\, and Human Condition VIII is the latest eagerly anticipated instalment. \nHuman Condition VIII tells the story of Mingcan\, a retiree who finds himself adrift and without a purpose in life. His status as a respected patriarch has long disappeared as his adult children have their own families and lives to deal with. Unable to contribute to the economy and unneeded by his family\, Mingcan questions his self-worth as his dignity slowly fades with each listless\, monotonous day. Just as he feels that he has struck rock-bottom\, he instead strikes the lottery jackpot\, and immediately finds himself to be of interest to his family once more. Mingcan feels respected\, needed\, wanted. But is this unexpected windfall a stroke of luck or a harbinger of misfortune? \nStarting in 2000\, the Human Condition series shines an empathetic spotlight on the day-to-day stories of everyday Taiwanese people who strive to make the best out of what they have in their lives. Presented by Greenray Theatre Company\, the series has continued to garner enthusiastic support and enjoy great appeal since its inception. It has become the first taste of theatre for many across Taiwan\, with each instalment of the series rapidly selling out within days of their launches. \nThe first comedy of the series\, Human Condition VIII is a humorous and poignant tale of masculine self-worth that features an acclaimed cast that includes theatre multi-hyphenate Chen Hsi-Cheng\, and Golden Bell Award winners Wang Juan and Yang Li-yin. \nPlaywright and director Wu Nien-jen is one of the most prolific and respected names in Taiwanese cinema. Debuting in 2001\, the Human Condition series is his blockbuster foray into theatre\, which had been seen and loved by over half a million Taiwanese theatergoers\, and earned him the prestigious National Cultural Award.

SUMMARY:Huayi 2025: The Heart of Jun: Memoirs of Zhaojun
DESCRIPTION:A tale of 20th-century voyagers seeking their destinies\, set against the elegant beauty of traditional Nanyin music. Co-produced with Siong Leng Musical Association\, The Heart of Jun: Memoirs of Zhaojun presents a musical experience of discovery\, courage and determination. \nThree women leave China and set sail for Southeast Asia in the early 20th century\, their voyage echoing the journey of Wang Zhaojun\, one of the legendary Four Beauties of ancient China. Finding themselves on a cargo ship\, they are inescapably embroiled in sinister struggles for power as a mysterious man reveals secrets they have yet to understand. What will their destinies hold? What connection exists between these three women braving a tumultuous sea and Wang Zhaojun\, who rode beyond the borders of Western Han into the Xiongnu empire? Do the fragments of loss and sorrow in Nanyin music symbolise the life stories of these modern women\, or do they inspire courage to explore new horizons? \n  \nThis fusion of traditional Nanyin music and contemporary theatre will delight both Nanyin purists and new audiences. Siong Leng breaks new ground in this collaboration with celebrated Taiwanese playwright Katherine Hui-ling Chou and Taiwanese director Lee Yi Hsiu\, who is known for his innovative direction of traditional music performances. \nThe Heart of Jun: Memoirs of Zhaojun features authentic traditional Nanyin music harking back half a millennium that narrates the legend of Wang Zhaojun\, with additional music composed by Siong Leng’s music director Ng Kang Kee. The production showcases the principal artists of Siong Leng\, and a skilled ensemble of Eastern and Western classical musicians performing together with Singapore actors Ang Xiao Ting\, Jodi Chan and Hang Qian Chou.

SUMMARY:Rickshaw Boy
DESCRIPTION:Rickshaw Boy narrates the life of Xiangzi\, a rickshaw puller in Beiping during the Republic of China era. A strong and ambitious young man from the countryside\, Xiangzi dreams of building an ideal life through his own efforts. However\, fate repeatedly thwarts his aspirations\, and despite his hard work and determination\, his circumstances remain unchanged. In the context of modern society\, Xiangzi’s helplessness and confusion reflect the struggles of modern workers caught in similar cycles of hardship. \nLao She is widely celebrated as a “Master of Language”\, with his works both entertaining and deeply rooted in the local culture of Beijing. Rickshaw Boy is among Lao She’s most renowned masterpieces. It presents a tragic story laced with humour\, using Beijing dialect and expressions to vividly portray the resilience\, pride\, and underlying pain of his characters. Director Fang Xu\, often regarded as a “Lao She specialist\,” has adapted Lao She’s works for the stage numerous times with his distinctive expressive and interpretative style. In this production\, Fang Xu reimagines the original text through a contemporary lens\, incorporating modern aesthetics into the stage design\, lighting\, music\, and visual composition. \nWhile the tragic struggles of the rickshaw pullers portrayed in Rickshaw Boy may seem distant to contemporary audiences\, the story also offers a compelling psychological portrait of Xiangzi himself. It delves into the conflict between his ideals and the harsh realities\, alongside the confusion\, frustration\, and helplessness that permeate his inner world – emotions that remain profoundly relatable even today. \nAnother standout feature of this adaptation is its all-male cast\, which boldly challenges traditional gender roles while employing a non-linear\, visually-driven narrative structure to depict Xiangzi’s tragic journey. This innovative approach departs from a straightforward retelling\, offering a rich and layered interpretation. \nOne of the female characters\, Tigress\, is portrayed by Zhao Zhen\, a nationally acclaimed Chinese actor with extensive theatre experience\, who brings the role of to life with a commanding portrayal of her domineering and sharp-tongued personality. Another female character\, Xiao Fu Zi\, is portrayed by Ren Yubin\, who is trained in traditional opera Dan roles. He delivers a poignant performance\, capturing the character’s sorrow and timidity with nuance. Siqin Gaowa\, an actress renowned for her iconic portrayal of Tigress in the film adaptation of Rickshaw Boy (1982)\, serves as the artistic advisor for this production. \nThis marks the firs-ever staging of Rickshaw Boy in Singapore and Fang Xu’s debut at the Esplanade. The critically acclaimed all-male cast\, which has captivated audiences in China\, will perform in this groundbreaking production\, making it a must-see event!

SUMMARY:Indian Performing Arts Convention (IPAC) 2024
DESCRIPTION:A showcase of Indian performing arts in dance\, music and theatre\, to develop interest and appreciation of Indian arts and culture throughout the year. \n \nDWITA\nDWITA\, is a mesmerising bharatanatyam performance by Rama Vaidyanathan and her daughter Dakshina Vaidyanathan that explores the harmonious coexistence of dualities. A mother-daughter duo reminds us of a duality that exists in every aspect of our lives. They complement and empower each other\, with one symbolising the present and the other the future. \nThere are always two sides to a coin\, two perceptions and two paths to a goal. Rooted in the temple traditions of Manipur\, the performance intertwines the ancient devotional dances of Lai-Haraoba and Raas Lila. This classical dance form is imbued with the devotional themes of Madhura Raas\, portraying the love of Kirshna with goddess Radha and the cowherd damsels of Vrindavan. The dance is characterised by soft body movements along with peaceful facial expressions known as Bhakti Rasa\, the emotion of devotion. \nTICKETS & PRICES\nStandard – $35\nConcession – $28
