SUMMARY:The Studios: Pickle Party
DESCRIPTION:“I enjoyed the ways it connects to the systems and limitations we all have to contend with as people who live in Singapore. I liked watching the ‘behind the scenes’ aspect\, the VJing was very fun and the live camera work too. The kitsch-ness worked well with a cyberpunk visual aesthetic!” \n— Shaw En\, Audience (Closed-door presentation\, 2023) \n“It challenged the typical usage and code of conduct of a typical theatrical space… and created a wonderful sense of community or intimacy. The text was also really powerful\, and the fear of being overly dependent on others really hit home. I hadn’t previously thought about this in relation to food sustainability and pickling before.” \n— Elle\, Audience (Closed-door presentation\, 2023) \n“My grandfather was a durian farmer\, back when they lived in a kampung. But in those 10 years\, most Singaporeans were forced to relocate to public housing. Even after he moved\, my grandfather was still trying to grow everything he could from a sixth floor concrete corridor. Everything he knew about growing durians was made obsolete so that knowledge was never passed down.” \nA show disguised as a pickling workshop\, Pickle Party is a multidisciplinary\, multi-species performance. Set against the backdrop of Singapore’s rapid development from farmland to modern city\, it dives into how humans\, microbes and food security are connected—where does our food come from? What will we be eating next? \nLed by directors Ang Xiao Ting (Extinction Feast\, ECOncert) and Kuo Jian Hong (All The World’s A Sea\, Four Horse Road)\, Pickle Party features award-winning livestream technology (XIMI)\, live VJ-ing\, live performance and community pickling. The production will be staged within a Singapore version of Tanja Beer’s critically-acclaimed The Living Stage\, which combines stage design\, permaculture and community engagement to create a recyclable\, biodegradable and edible performance space. \nExperience Pickle Party your way! For each performance\, participants can choose to be Picklers (get hands-on with pickling on stage\, limited slots) or be part of the General Audience (watch the performance from a different perspective). Kindly select your preferred audience experience at the point of ticket purchase. \nDiscover the power of edible hope.

SUMMARY:The Studios: Escape to Batam
DESCRIPTION:Two of Singapore theatre’s most formidable multi-hyphenates craft a lyrical spectacle of the past and present\, speaking to all who have known the harsh bitterness and gentle longing of awaiting a new normal. \nWhat do stories of war tell us about human resilience and how we care for those closest to us? How does telling these stories help us to comfort and to heal? \nCreated by Claire Wong and Huzir Sulaiman\, Escape to Batam is a delicate tapestry of the past and the present\, weaving the remarkable lived experiences of Ming\, who spent his boyhood on the rural island of Batam to escape the Japanese Occupation of Singapore\, with his daughter’s personal stories of family\, loss and grief felt in the years since her father’s passing. Drawing parallels from their different life journeys\, daughter Claire finds herself discovering what it means to live with the pain of loving those who have left us\, and how to carry on for those who are still with us. \nDirector-Playwright Claire leads a phenomenal ensemble cast of Adib Kosnan\, Chaney Chia\, Genevieve Tan\, Rebekah Sangeetha Dorai\, and Neo Swee Lin. Poignant and humorous by turns\, Escape to Batam draws deeply on Claire and Huzir’s mastery of the written word and the theatrical medium to create a powerful new play that transcends generations.

SUMMARY:The Studios: FOOD
DESCRIPTION:“But it is safe to say\, at this dinner party\, even though you won’t be eating much\, Sobelle will give you plenty to chew on.” – Playbill \n“For all its playfulness\, this brilliant show has the power to make you look with fresh eyes at a daily act that you probably take for granted — a surefire sign of its worth as a work of genuinely thought-provoking art.” – Theatermania \nDo we need what we eat? Do we eat what we need? What does it really cost? Chew on these questions in this theatrical gastronomy experience unlike any other. \nAt the centre of the performance space lies a comically large banquet table\, encircled by audience members. The host of the evening\, Geoff Sobelle\, conducts this multi-sensory experience with deft hands\, animated expressions and impressive physicality. Activating the senses through a myriad of sounds\, scents\, sights and textures\, this acclaimed theatremaker stitches together a conversation about personal memories\, consumption and the evolution of food production over generations. You are invited to be a guest at the dinner party—whether around the table or from the surrounding seats. \nConcocted and performed by American actor\, producer and innovator Geoff Sobelle\, FOOD features his signature flavour of theatricality\, combining rigorous design\, onstage magic and subtle humour to create a participatory experience. Connecting the universal to the personal and distilling the absurd from the seemingly mundane\, FOOD invites the audience to explore their place within this exploration of food and consumption. \nFOOD is the third part of a performance trilogy that explores the abnormal corners of ordinary topics. Each installment—The Object Lesson (2013)\, HOME (2017)\, and FOOD (2022)—encourages the audience to ponder their personal connections with objects\, spaces\, and food. Following its acclaimed selection as an invited work for the prestigious Edinburgh International Festival\, FOOD sold out performances in 2023 and went on to tour in countries like Australia\, Korea and now\, Singapore. \nIt will be a dinner party to remember: gather round and feast on questions and contemplations surrounding society’s relationship with food and sustenance.

SUMMARY:The Studios: Haribo Kimchi
DESCRIPTION:★★★★\n“Haribo Kimchi is both a refined as well as a raw performance about life in a country that isn’t yours.”\n– De Standaard \n“A performance that inimitably blends Korean cooking with personal stories and reflections on comfort food\, identity and migration.”\n– pzazz \nThe surprising flavour of seaweed soup\, the sharp sound of a knife slicing cucumber\, the hiss and sizzle of mushrooms on a scorching fire. \nIn Haribo Kimchi\, we find ourselves in a pojangmacha\, one of the typical late-night snack bars found on the streets of South Korea. There\, we meet three characters—a snail\, a gummy bear\, and an eel—who take us on a culinary journey\, exploring food as shelter for those dislocated from their culture. In a series of intimate\, absurdist anecdotes\, they recount the evolution of kimchi culture\, the bitter pain of unadulterated racism\, the shame of trying to blend in\, and the deep umami taste of home. \nThis work comes from South Korean theatremaker and composer Jaha Koo\, whose practice oscillates between multimedia and performance\, encompassing his own music\, video\, text\, and robotic objects. He rose to international prominence with his Hamartia Trilogy (2015 – 2021)\, a series of critically-acclaimed works which delved into the far-reaching imperialism in East Asia. The first two works of this trilogy\, Lolling & Rolling and Cuckoo\, were presented to packed houses at Singapore International Festival of Arts 2023\, receiving rave reviews from audiences and critics alike. \nEmploying a hybrid style that combines music\, cutting-edge video\, and robotic performers\, the artist reflects on cultural assimilation with all its conflicts and paradoxes. In an exceptional performance that plays with all the senses\, he serves up personal stories marinated in sweet-and-sour melancholy. \nMore food for thought—how do you express your artistic values through theatre? SUMMARY:The Studios: Scenes from the Climate Era
DESCRIPTION:From an Australian playwright known for whip-smart works at the crossroads of science and art\, comes a dazzling and provocative reflection on the biggest crisis in human history. \nA couple discusses whether it’s ethical to have children. Scientists try to bioengineer a new coral reef. A Chinese team works to contain a glacier by building an Antarctic seawall. The last frog of its kind calls into the abyss for a mate. \nScenes from the Climate Era is a dizzying stream of conversations. Snapping between the absurd and the comic\, the domestic and the global\, the past\, present and possible futures\, the play distils the big ideas into intimate snapshots that bristle with urgency. \nWorking alongside director Ellison Tan\, playwright David Finnigan adapts this work to reflect a warmth and sensibility unique to this region. This Singapore edition is a brand-new take on the original play\, with scenes re-written or moved around\, and brought to life by a stellar\, multigenerational cast. \nScenes from the Climate Era is a stark reminder that time is no longer running out but merely passing\, and that the consequences of generations past are the inevitable reality of those to come. \nCreative Access: Embedded Narration \nEmbedded Narration in the context of this production has descriptive lines embedded seamlessly into the dialogue. Soundscapes and amplified movements give important key information on environment\, atmosphere and intention of each scene. \nThis is an access feature provided for more inclusive appreciation of the play\, created with Creative Access collaborator and performer\, Claire Teo. \nPre-show notes will be available at a later date. \nProduction credits  \nPlaywright: David Finnigan\nDirector: Ellison Tan\nCostume Coordinator: Loo An Ni\nLighting Designer: Adrian Tan\nMovement Director: Yvan Karlsson\nSound Designer: Bani Haykal\nCreative Access Collaborator: Claire Teo\nCast: Siti Hajar\, Tay Kong Hui\, Ali Mazrin\, Vishnucharan Naidu\, Lian Sutton\, Gloria Tan\, Claire Teo\, Teo Pei Si\nProducer: Shridar Mani (The Public Space)\nProduction Manager: Cindy Yeong\nStage Manager: Woo Hsia Ling\nAssistant Stage Manager: Cristabel Ng

SUMMARY:Jazz in July: The Legendary Johnny O'Neal Quartet
DESCRIPTION:After five decades as a pianist\, vocalist\, and entertainer\, Johnny O’Neal stands as a true jazz master. A 2025 Jazz Legacies Fellow\, his storied career includes collaborations with Ray Brown\, Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers\, and Sarah Vaughan\, a Carnegie Hall debut opening for Oscar Peterson\, and induction into the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame. SUMMARY:Porcelain Shield\, Paper Sword Album Launch
DESCRIPTION:“[Mary Sue]’s lo-fi hip-hop\, heavy on noise-flecked loops and light on conventional song structures\, is a far cry from the glossily produced trap- and R&B-influenced sounds many rappers in the city-state gravitate to. If they’re emulating Drake and Travis Scott\, Mary Sue’s heroes are MF DOOM and Earl Sweatshirt; if they’re aiming for Spotify playlist placements\, Mary Sue celebrates a spot on Bandcamp’s front page.”\n– Karen Gwee \n “As a rapper and producer\, Mary Sue—generally called Sue by listeners—proved himself as one of the most promising voices of the current underground hip-hop scene with his 2022 debut album Kisses of Life\, inspired by the death of one of his heroes\, MF DOOM. Woozy\, crunchy samples\, inward-looking\, self-reflective lyricism\, and lavish\, stylish production drove that album.”\n– Reece Beckett \nGamelan phrases melt into smoky brass\, spectral melodies unravel over off-kilter drums: Porcelain Shield and Paper Sword\, the latest record by Mary Sue and the Clementi Sound Appreciation Club\, is both a reckoning and a dream. \nKnown for his left-of-centre sound and charismatic flows drawn from a deep appreciation and understanding of the hip hop genre\, Singaporean rapper-producer Mary Sue presents a one-night-only performance to celebrate this album with his five-piece live band\, the Clementi Sound Appreciation Club. You’re invited to join them on an abstract hip hop journey where tradition and modernity blur\, fusing Southeast Asian texture with live jazz\, blues and soul across hypnotic instrumentation\, fractured beats and shifting rhythms. At the album’s core is the tale of a time-traveling oracle\, lost in the contradictions of the present—where meaning dilutes\, spirituality performs\, and the past collides with an uncertain future. \nSupporting the night are local indie mainstays sub:shaman and Malaysian boombap rapper Glazed Baguette with his crew\, Blanco Music.

SUMMARY:Flipside 2025: Gibbon
DESCRIPTION:★★★★\n“Seriously interesting and wryly amusing”\n– The Guardian \n  \n“The combination of mesmerising manipulation and dry comedy left me wanting more”\n– Circus Diaries \n  \n“…an absorbing and entertaining work achieved through a powerful combination of technical skill and performance chemistry”\n– Resolution \n  \nDevastatingly slick and wonderfully thought-provoking\, Gibbon fuses dance\, physical theatre and juggling to explore the absurd and comedic connections between human behaviours. \n  \nCo-produced by Olivier Award-winning Gandini Juggling and breakout stars Chris Patfield and José Triguero\, Gibbon is a surreal and charming feast of juggling choreography with a sense of humour and a hint of absurdity. The production captivates with a powerful combination of technical skill and performance chemistry.  Achieving success while masking failure\, the narrative is formed when the action cuts between the creation and the execution of hypnotic patterns and juggling movement sequences. \n  \nGibbon takes inspiration from the world of dance\, innovating choreographically and conceptually\, mixing different art forms with juggling and exploring ideas through movement and devised theatre to create a surreal and touching atmosphere. Patfield and Triguero capture the tension of gravity defiance\, combining the inevitable speed of an object falling with the slow movement of intertwined arms and hands. \n  \nPoetic and comedic\, Gibbon is a unique spectacle that invites you to marvel equally at the depth of thought and the proficiency of its performers.

SUMMARY:Flipside 2025: Bill's 44th
DESCRIPTION:“…buoyant\, mesmerizing\, joy-inducing…”\n– New York Times \n“This isn’t the birthday that Bill had hoped to have. But for the audience\, his 44th is a gift.”\n– New York Times \n★★★★★\n“A celebration of life\, memory and the passage of time\, brilliantly executed and truly unforgettable.”\n– One4Review \n“Manjuck and James have created a show that evolves from this gentle comedy\, with its absurdist elements\, to this touchingly heartfelt reflective piece about [loneliness] and truly finding yourself and loving that person you discover.”\n– The New Current \nThe streamers are hung\, the punch has been spiked\, and the cake is just begging to be eaten! Now\, all Bill has to do is wait for his guests to arrive. \nCreated and puppeteered by Dorothy James and Andy Manjuck\, Bill’s 44th is a non-verbal\, comedic puppet show for adults performed with an original score\, centered on one very worried leading man\, Bill. SUMMARY:Mosaic Music Series: Beach Fossils
DESCRIPTION:Rising to prominence in the 2010s amidst a surge of left-of-center indie pop\, Beach Fossils quickly amassed a loyal cult following thanks to its dreamy\, far-away sound\, grounded by dreary\, realist lyricism. Throughout the last fifteen years\, they have steadily earned their stature as one of the most definitive and enduring bands emerging from the 2010s New York underground. They consistently reach new listeners thanks to the steady evolution of their sound from the DIY solo project of Dustin Payseur to an influential self-produced four-piece dream pop band\, where Payseur is joined by core band members Tommy Davidson (guitar)\, Jack Doyle Smith (bass)\, and Anton Hochheim (drums). \nNow\, after seven years\, this iconic quartet returns to Singapore with new material alongside fan favourite songs\, drawing from beloved albums such as the recently-released Bunny (2023)\, the jangly melancholy of their self-titled 2010 album\, the gritty post-punk inspired Class the Truth (2013)\, and many more. Through tone and mood\, Beach Fossils communicate a coming-of-age narrative of self-discovery. Payseur’s slice-of-life lyrics reflect on depression\, love\, adventure\, loss\, mistakes\, New York City\, friendships coming and going—a mélange of granular pieces in the process of continuing to find yourself.

SUMMARY:Mosaic Music Series: YĪN YĪN
DESCRIPTION:Vibrant\, shimmery and irresistibly groovy\, YĪN YĪN’s cinematic sound has propelled this largely instrumental four-piece band into unexpected global heights. \nHailing from Holland’s southernmost city of Maastricht\, the band first caught the attention of listeners globally by meticulously crafting a unique sound that married psychedelia\, funk\, disco with Asian influences. They first burst onto the scene in 2019 with the Thai psychrock-influenced The Rabbit that Hunts Tigers\, which they performed across several shows to great reception\, including at the famed Lowlands festival. During the pandemic\, the band wrote and recorded The Age of Aquarius\, later released in 2022. Described as spiritual and cosmic\, the record retained the band’s distinct Southeast Asian influence while diving even deeper into dancefloor propulsion and space travel atmospherics. \nYĪN YĪN marked yet another evolution with their 2024 album\, Mount Matsu\, the first record collectively created by all members of the band. Deeply informed by both the imaginative sound waves of the cosmos as well as the earthly musical culture of Japan\, Mount Matsu is infectious\, strangely harmonious and highly energetic. The album’s sound is somewhat of a synthesis of their first two records\, utilising pentatonic scales and vintage synthesisers for their signature sound\, built on a solid foundation of psychedelic disco\, fat global funk\, electronics and tribal experiments. \nMaking their way to Singapore for the first time\, YĪN YĪN invites you into their expansive sonic cosmos: join the fray and let your fantasy run wild\, dance your heart out and ascend Mount Matsu with YĪN YĪN.

Through intricate instrumental melodies and multi-layered arrangements\, the Korean-Canadian artist weaves together a sonic universe of dreamy\, baroque-pop with elements of soft rock\, charming a growing legion of fans with her unique brand of cinematic dream pop. \nHaving first garnered attention online in 2020\, she went on to release her debut EP\, Duality\, featuring the likes of Jay Som\, beabadoobee\, and Dreamer Isioma. This record generated hits such as Afterglow\, Misery Moon and Silver Into Rain\, and garnered a Juno Award nomination for Alternative Album of the Year. This rising star went on to open and tour with the likes of Japanese Breakfast\, Wolf Alice\, and beabadobee. \nBut set against When a Thought Grows Wings\, her debut feels like a stepping stone to her sweet spot. This sophomore album is a snapshot of its creator influx. SUMMARY:Contemporary Performing Arts Research Residency
DESCRIPTION:Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay invites local and international artists\, curators\, programmers\, writers\, researchers and practitioners across all disciplines in the performing arts to apply for the Contemporary Performing Arts Research Residency\, taking place in Singapore between April and June 2026. In its third edition\, the Contemporary Performing Arts Research Residency is an artistic research development programme by Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay\, supported by the National Arts Council\, Singapore. \nThis fully-funded residency aims to support creative research in contemporary performing arts by providing its residents the time and space for artistic inquiry\, experimentation\, development\, research activities and opportunities for interdisciplinary and transcultural dialogues. The residency welcomes various manners and methodologies of enquiry\, embracing a pluralistic approach towards research that unfolds not only through the written word\, but also includes forms of experimentation with the body\, performed moments\, and other non-traditional systems of knowledge. \nThere is no commitment for residents to create a production during or after the residency. Instead\, residents will be asked to present at least one public programme of their choosing\, developed in conversation with the Esplanade Team. \nThe residency is a duration of between one month to three months long and residents will receive a stipend\, access to a shared-working space\, studios when required\, as well as accommodation and international travel to or from Singapore\, if from abroad. \nThere will be biennial open calls held for applications to the residency and each edition will revolve around a thematic focus conceived to respond to current critical issues in our society. In 2026\, the residency presents the thematic focus This Time. \nResidents are chosen through a Selection Panel comprising leading international curators\, programmers\, academics\, artists and managers. They have been appointed based on their thought-provoking practices\, dynamic networks with practitioners from a wide variety of disciplines and their invaluable knowledge of the performing arts across Singapore\, Asia and beyond. The Selection Panel will also serve as interlocutors in the programme’s development and be available as consultants for all residents.

SUMMARY:Mosaic Music Series: Death From Above 1979
DESCRIPTION:Two decades of absolute electricity culminates in one explosive tour: Beginning in 2024\, Death From Above 1979 (DFA 1979) celebrates the 20th anniversary of their debut LP You’re A Woman\, I’m A Machine\, a genre-bending iconoclastic cult classic that sounds as fresh today as it did in 2004. Dubbed “dance-punk” by the UK press\, their music doesn’t merely suggest\, it commands those who hear it to the grimy\, feverish and dimly-lit dance floor. \nTo celebrate\, the band are playing furiously around the world while endeavouring on a year-long recording project to reinvigorate and honour their iconic flagship album. 20 years is a long time for rock ‘n’ roll\, but the odometer turns slowly for this power duo. As explosive as ever\, DFA 1979 summons their fans to the pit to revel in their uniquely infectious\, high-octane rock n’ roll.

SUMMARY:Kian Soltani and Amsterdam Sinfonietta
DESCRIPTION:“Soltani fills gracefully shaped phrases with eloquent\, butterscotch-tinted cello sound. He crafts a lucid\, clearly defined and distinctly classical reading\, not without humour”\n–Gramophone on Soltani’s performance of Dvořák’s Cello Concerto \n“…Amsterdam Sinfonietta clearly demonstrated why it is considered to be one of the Netherland’s top orchestras…the musicians breathed in unison as one woman (the majority wins)\, presenting a truly convincing interpretation packed with excitement and intensity.”\n– Dagblad de Limburger by Maurice Wiche \nPraised for his “sheer perfection” by The Times\, virtuoso cellist Kian Soltani joins the acclaimed Amsterdam Sinfonietta for their highly anticipated Singapore debut at Esplanade. \nUnder the direction of visionary violinist Candida Thompson\, the Amsterdam Sinfonietta has earned international recognition for its bold\, genre-defying collaborations and its commitment to innovative programming and unparalleled artistry. Together with Soltani—winner of the prestigious International Paulo Cello Competition and recipient of the Credit Suisse Young Artist Award at the Lucerne Festival in 2017—they will present a mesmerising programme that spans the works of Schubert\, Mendelssohn\, and the iconic Haydn’s Cello Concerto No. 1 in C major. This celebrated concerto\, a masterpiece of symphonic elegance\, is a favourite among cellists and a testament to Haydn’s genius. \n
