SUMMARY:Queering the Play: A Very Specific Timeline from One Gay Jew
DESCRIPTION:What makes a play queer? Must it feature primarily queer characters? Does it necessarily centre on timeless queer narratives— coming out\, oppression\, political change? Or is it enough that the play\, like all queers\, tries to find a new way of seeing and being in the world— a play that builds theatrical worlds that resist orthodoxy\, authority\, and received binaries? Join visiting Writer in Residence Sean Dunnington in conversation with playwright Joel Tan as they pry open these questions\, featuring readings from Sean’s plays that reflect the shifting sensibilities and approaches to queerness in his work over the years.

SUMMARY:TOOLS: A Workshop Series for Playwrights Exploring Theatricality - Magic Props
DESCRIPTION:This workshop investigates the remapping process\, where one thing stands in for another and real-world elements correspond with their stage-space equivalents. What happens when a stick becomes a gun or a house is described as an imaginary zone? We’ll examine the audience’s role in recognizing these substitutions and experiment with how to teach them to understand the play. \nThis is part of a workshop series by our visiting resident playwright Sean Dunnington. It invites playwrights to be curious about theatricality. Each session dives into a specific element of this conceptual spell\, blending discussion\, hands-on activities\, performance\, and experimentation.

SUMMARY:TOOLS: A Workshop Series for Playwrights Exploring Theatricality - Stage Directions
DESCRIPTION:Tools is a workshop series by our visiting resident playwright Sean Dunnington for playwrights curious about theatricality—the unique magic of theatre that invites audiences to “believe” what they see on stage is true-to-life\, even while knowing it’s not real (to an extent). Each session dives into a specific element of this conceptual spell\, blending discussion\, hands-on activities\, performance\, and experimentation. \nJoin us for the first workshop this January which will look at Stage Directions. In this workshop\, we’ll explore what stage directions can do beyond blocking and lighting cues. How can they become indispensable to the play? Can they describe things that never appear? Should they be interpreted as literal\, tonal\, or something else entirely? Can they dare be ignored? Through examples and practice\, we’ll test how much stage directions can shape a play. \nThis workshop is suitable for playwrights/writers who are engaged with/thinking about craft at a serious level.

SUMMARY:Dramaturgs &: In conversation with Directors
DESCRIPTION:DRAMATURGS & is a capsule series of roundtable conversations centering the work of and relationship between dramaturgs and their artistic collaborators. Dramaturgical thinking and application is integral in the work of all artists\, yet a dramaturg’s role affords a dedicated lens that can expand and challenge artistic decisions. In cosy and candid sessions\, we aim to unpack the relational\, intricate and often invisible work of dramaturgs in creative processes and within artistic teams. \nThe third of this year’s series is DRAMATURGS & DIRECTORS\, where we explore the working relationships between these two roles. What might directors want from dramaturgs as collaborators? How is the dramaturgical thinking a dramaturg offers different from that of a director? Can a dramaturg’s contribution reveal blindspots in the director’s vision and what happens then? \nJoin us for this thought-provoking conversation facilitated by Cherilyn Woo and bring your questions for our exciting panel of artists including Kok Heng Leun\, Huzir Sulaiman and Sim Yan Ying.

SUMMARY:Playwrights Breaking Things
DESCRIPTION:The four writers of Centre 42’s Playwright’s Professional Development Residency have spent the past couple of months reading\, writing\, and thinking about what it means to break things: old habits\, the fear of writing\, new ground\, comfortable forms… even the play itself. How do they break with familiar ways of entering and exploring a play\, and what fresh insight into their processes can that unlock? \nCome join us for a reading of some texts followed by a chat with the residents\, as they share some of their personal writing discoveries from the first chapter of their two year residency\, facilitated by residency leads Jean Tay and Joel Tan.

SUMMARY:Waterloo Street Stories 2024: Cor Machina (Heart of the Machine)
DESCRIPTION:Cor Machina (Heart of the Machine) is an immersive and interactive experience combining poetry\, sound\, and light. Part of “Waterloo Street Stories 2024: Interplay” and Centre 42’s 10th Anniversary celebrations\, this event celebrates the rich histories and communities of Waterloo Street. \nWaterloo Street represents Singapore’s diverse heritage\, and Cor Machina explores the connections between communities and the arts\, symbolised by the typewriter as a relic with the poet as its beating heart. The typewriter’s mechanical clatter echoes modern life’s relentless grind\, yet within this noise\, there is beauty—a reminder that even in the machine\, the human heart creates with hope. \nCor Machina captures this playfully\, by inviting participants to explore these themes through creation. Audiences first enter an installation of pre-made prompts that draws from personal\, communal memories and stories of the street. They’re invited to send in an order for a poem to the Proletariat Poetry Factory\, which becomes a meta memory machine. Poets\, musicians\, and artists create new memories and stories from their inputs\, blending them with the street’s past. \nThe work evokes collective remembrance and celebrates the street’s heritage in a contemporary context. The intent is to spark meaningful conversations\, weaving together past and present\, individual and collective experience. This performance is also in conjunction with Centre 42’s 10th Anniversary\, serving to commemorate our placemaking and memory making on Waterloo Street.

SUMMARY:Open Call for Writers – Sound Plot: ULU
DESCRIPTION:Sound Plot is Centre 42’s audio plays series\, each edition drawing on a certain geographic area in Singapore. This edition\, produced in collaboration with the NTU Museum\, zooms in on Jurong West and its surrounding area\, where the university is located. \nThis is an invitation for two writers to respond through audio drama to this fascinating area\, guided by the curatorial prompt “Ulu”. Selected writers will need to be available for an intensive 3-week script development phase in October 2024\, and will work with a director during the recording and production process in November & December 2024. Audio production will be done in collaboration with Artwave Studio\, and slated for release online in January 2025. \nThis is a paid opportunity\, and commissioned writers will receive $1\,000 each. \n\n\n\n\nTO APPLY\n\n\n\n\nApplication period runs from 5 August 2024 (12pm) to 15 September 2024 (12pm). Please complete this online form to submit the following: \n\nYour updated CV. Highlight your experience in writing for / working in the audio medium.\nA writing sample of no more than 10 pages. This should be from an existing stage play\, audio play\, or screenplay.\nYour proposal for a 15-minute audio play\, which must:\n\nrespond to the curatorial prompt below\ntell us about the curiosity\, fascination\, or other impulse that draws you to this work\, and how you imagine this play might delve into these ideas\ndescribe your ideas for the narrative\, characters\, and world that the play takes place in\nbe no more than 2 pages.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCURATORIAL PROMPT\n\n\n\n\nULU \nJurong West tends to be the butt of our “ulu” jokes. After all\, it’s where we seem to tuck away things we’d rather not see: cemeteries\, a man-made island heaving with chemicals\, and secretive military bases. \nBut if we look beneath this industrial veneer – always building\, always reclaiming – what other stories might we find? Here thrum large swathes of undeveloped secondary forest\, rewilding over the memories of the gambier plantations that kickstarted Singapore’s endless development. Here\, the coast hugs the mouth of the Straits of Johor\, where we can still imagine our deep connections to ancient kingdoms. Here lies a large university town\, filled with utopian architecture that tells a story about a world that could be so much better and kinder to the earth. And here lie the hopes and dreams of new families looking to build lives in one of the fastest-growing residential zones on the island\, each built-to-order flat remaking the “ulu” face of the Western region. \nWe invite you to write a play that reckons in any way with these ideas. Whether you’re curious about the many layers of history in Jurong West; have a story to tell about the diverse range of people who live\, work\, and play here; or have a speculative tale about its future\, we want to hear your ideas! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSCHEDULE\n\n\n\n\nThe turnaround for these audio plays will be quick and intensive. Selected writers will need to be available for the phases outlined below and commit to the duration of the project. \n5 August – 15 September: \n\nOpen Call for Proposals\nPrepare your documents and apply via this form\n\n20 September: \n\nSelected writers will be notified\n\n1 October – 21 October: \n\nScript development intensive\nWriters will need to be available to turn in drafts of their script\, engage in discussions with script dramaturg\, director\, sound designer and producer\n\n27 October – 10 December:\nAudio pre and production phase \n\nWriters will need to be ready for script edits\, rehearsals with voice actors and director\, and participate in the recording process\n\n6 January – 17 February: \n\nAudio post-production phase: reviewing of edits and final publishing\n\n20 January – 28 February \n\nLaunch of Audio Plays\, starting from 20 January 2025

SUMMARY:Desert Blooms – The Dawn of Queer Singaporean Theatre
DESCRIPTION:SYNOPSIS\nAfter a riveting first staging in 2019\, Desert Blooms – The Dawn of Queer Singaporean Theatre  by Ng Yi-Sheng makes a triumphant return with a restaging at the Wild Rice Theatre in Funan for one show only. Restaged in conjunction with Centre 42’s 10th Anniversary\, Desert Blooms is a lecture-performance that recounts the history of queer and queer-allied voices in Singapore theatre during the tumultuous decade of 1985-1995\, showcasing the works of playwrights such as Eleanor Wong\, Russell Heng and many more. \nTraverse through many firsts portrayed on stage – the first portrayals of a transgender woman’s struggles in “Lest the Demons Get to Me”\, the first lesbian protagonist in “Mergers and Accusations” – all of which opened new conversations for queer characters to enter society’s consciousness. \n\n\n\n\n“Queerness first dared to speak its name publicly on stage\, and the newspapers—some begrudgingly\, some opportunistically—followed suit.” \n– Alfian Sa’at\, Review of the 2019 staging. \n\n\n\n\nFeaturing the talents of Yap Yi Kai\, Medli Dorothea Loo\, Izzul Irfan and Coco Wang Ling\, with renowned theatremaker Tan Shou Chen returning to direct\, Desert Blooms is a fascinating and well-researched look at how queer voices bloomed in an era once known as a “cultural desert”. Look back on Singapore’s storied past where arts\, politics and society were undergoing a profound transformation\, and how it shapes tomorrow’s narratives. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRESERVING YOUR SEAT\n\n\n\n\nDesert Blooms is being staged as part of Centre 42’s fundraising efforts in conjunction with our 10th anniversary. SUMMARY:Dramaturgs &: In conversation with Choreographers
\nThe second of this year’s series is DRAMATURGS & CHOREOGRAPHERS\, where we explore the working relationships between these two roles. When and how do choreographers invite a dramaturg into the choreographic process? What tensions arise between the choreographer’s creative autonomy and the dramaturg’s perspectives and insights? How might a dramaturg help the choreographer sustain and nurture (or nourish?) their practice over the long term? \nJoin us to unpack these questions (and more) in a conversation facilitated by Dr Nidya Shanthini Manokara\, and hear from a panel of local and international dance-makers Dapheny Chen\, Ricky Sim and Guy Cools.

SUMMARY:The Vault: The TRUE Awards
DESCRIPTION:The Vault: The TRUE Awards comprises a performance-response and a reading of excerpts from the original text. \nFirst staged sixty years ago in 1964\, Lim Chor Pee’s A White Rose at Midnight centres around disillusioned English-educated scholar Lee Hua Min\, and his tumultous relationship with his flatmate Wong’s sister\, the Chinese-educated ex-nightclub singer Ching Mei. Written and staged in the uncertain\, volatile years pre-independence\, A White Rose at Midnight was a humorous\, witty and prescient portrait of both a soul and a nation divided. \nA White Rose at Midnight was first performed by the Experimental Theatre Club at the Cultural Centre Theatre in National University of Singapore\, and received a partial dramatised reading in 2014 as part of Centre 42’s lecture-performance\, The Vault 1.1 – Nineteen Sixty-Four. \nThis year\, seven students from the National University of Singapore’s Theatre & Performance Studies TS3103 Theatre Lab will present a fully-staged response to A White Rose at Midnight. In accompaniment to this performance-response\, excerpts of the original text will be read by selected alumni of the Theatre & Performance Studies programme. \n*** \nJoin us to experience this performance-response and celebrate the nominees of The TRUE Awards.

SUMMARY:New Scripts Garage Nov 2023: Malay-language Edition
DESCRIPTION:The New Scripts Garage is a regular offer of dramaturgical support for new scripts\, convened every other month\, with low barriers to entry. On a regular basis\, we open our inboxes for script submissions from playwrights seeking dramaturgical support for their work. \nFor the November 2023 cycle\, we are collaborating with Teater Ekamatra to offer a Malay-language edition\, that will accept up to eight scripts through an Open Call. \n\n\nThis programme prioritises writer development over polish and aims to get the writer excited to work on the next draft of their script\, with a clearer sense of where to go. \nScript Eligibility: \n\nWe are accepting plays in the Malay-language or predominantly (at least 80%) in the Malay-language for this special edition. Translations are welcome where available.\nWe are not accepting straight adaptations of other work (e.g. novels\, films)\, but will accept adaptations with a clear creative\, re-inventive\, and/or radical approach.\nWe prioritise completed drafts of full length plays and shorter plays. We may consider partially complete drafts of scripts with extensive scenes.

SUMMARY:New Scripts Garage August 2023
DESCRIPTION:The New Scripts Garage provides three scripts with considered dramaturgical support in the form of either a facilitated Script Circle or One-on-One Dramaturgy Sessions with our Writer in Residence. \nThe first six eligible scripts received during the Open Call Submissions period will be handed over to the team of readers\, made up of directors\, playwrights\, and dramaturgs\, who will consider the submissions. \nBased on the quality of the script\, its stage of development\, and the writer’s needs as expressed in the application form\, they will then recommend either a Script Circle or one-on-one dramaturgy sessions with our Writer in Residence. \nThe Script Circle will be organised by Centre 42\, who will invite actors\, writers\, directors\, and dramaturgs from a pool of artists we have been working closely with on this programme. The scripts receiving one-on-one dramaturgy will be scheduled directly with our Writer in Residence\, who will read the scripts and provide detailed feedback in discussion with the writer. Scripts that were not shortlisted will receive written feedback from the reading team and writers are welcome to submit subsequent drafts for future iterations. \nThis programme prioritises writer development over polish\, and aims to get the writer excited to work on the next draft of their script\, with a clearer sense of where to go. \nPlease note that this is not a presentational platform. This short-form residency is ideal for playwrights who have a script that they want to take forward to the next draft in the development process.

The works they will be presenting are: \n\n“Sotong” by Kay Lynn Er\n“All Kinds of Time” by Wisely Chow\n“An Examination” by Ivan Choong\n“The Chilli Powder Sisters”  by Melizarani T. SUMMARY:Studio | SIFA X: there is no future in nostalgia
DESCRIPTION:Responding to the rich layers of ambivalence and irony in Arthur Yap’s poem “there is no future in nostalgia\,” the four residents of Centre 42’s Playwright’s Professional Development Residency present dramatized readings of new short plays that reflect on the tensions between technocratic and civic visions of life in Singapore. \nThese four new short plays are presented as double-bill performances over two weekends: \nStudio A (Ahmad Musta’ain and Danial Matin)\, 20 May\, 3pm and 21 May\, 8pm \nThe Best of Us by Ahmad Musta’ain \nThey say you make lifelong friends in NS. For Khai and Taj\, their army bestie was the camp canteen lady\, Juweeta. Now\, in a space beyond living and dying\, these two boys must find their way back to save Kak Ju in her time of crisis. Together the three friends embark on a journey of nostalgia saturated with Beyoncé\, cackles\, and the tragedies of illness\, and perhaps the only person who can save Juweeta is herself. By turns raucous and melancholy\, Ahmad Musta’ain Bin Khamis’s new play is about unlikely army friendships\, queer families\, and the healing power of memory. \nAsymptote by Danial Matin \nA scientist digs up a skull in Antarctica\, an exile reunites with his mother in a morgue\, two trans-national lovers negotiate the future of their relationship\, a pair of Malaysian parents grow apart from their child across the causeway… These are some of the beguiling\, lyrical stories in Danial Matin’s new play about how time acts on the heart. Each tender vignette explores the myriad ways ordinary people wrestle with loss\, and the restless\, unstable nature of home. In the end\, what is left to hold on to? And do we hold on to what is left? \nStudio B (A Yagnya and Rachel Chin)\, 27 May\, 3pm and 28 May\, 8pm \nHelp! Our Dead have Dementia\, and Other Stories by A Yagnya \nQueen Elizabeth has just died\, sparking the sudden appearance of Dada\, who seems to have risen from the dead\, for whom memory- in death – is (was?) (what is time?) a tenuous thing. Devan (who’s about to move out of his childhood home) is suddenly launched into the unreliable mind of his late grandfather. But nothing will stop the old man from narrating from beyond the grave at his grandson\, who’s just trying to Marie Kondo his dead Dada’s life. Hilarious and poignant\, this bold new play by A Yagnya asks: if the world keeps rebuilding itself\, what the hell are the dead going to hold on to? \nWhere the Hantus At? by Rachel Chin \nWhen their dad passes\, sisters Lynette and Leia must decide what to do with his estate: to preserve what is there\, or to sell their house and move on. But they’ve forgotten how much each gets on the other’s nerves\, and as the resentment builds\, an ugly battle of wills ensues. Naturally\, the dead get involved. Rachel Chin’s whacky and hard-hitting new play is about hantus\, family\, love and memory. After all\, they’re the same thing… right?
