SUMMARY:The Long Gaze: Prints and Ceramics by Chua Chon Hee
DESCRIPTION:🍂 Opening with the artist in attendance is on Saturday\, 28 October 2023\, 3 – 5pm. All are welcome! \nAC43 Gallery is proud to present the latest solo exhibition of local multidisciplinary artist Chua Chon Hee. The exhibition features a selection of 25 monotype prints accomplished by the artist between 2013 – 2023 and 8 newly-completed ceramic sculptures. \nThe Long Gaze invites audience to dwell in the meditative yet experimental world of Chon Hee’s artistic quest. Her monotype prints thrive on a meaningful collision of shapes and textures\, with some works featuring the contemplative incorporation of actual leaf forms as bled through her press. Parts of their distinct shapes\, organic protrusions and sinewy veins disintegrate and metamorphose into fluid marks and painterly gestures on paper\, imbuing her prints with a spontaneous sense of nature in transformation. \nThis reverence for nature is similarly translated in Chon Hee’s approach with ceramic sculptures. She often utilises a mix of locally-sourced earth as her material\, and strives for earthy tones and natural lines during her throwing and the firing process in her own kilns. These ceramics will be situated in conversation with a series of drawings that capture her observations of natural botanical forms\, of which some found their ways into the\nexpressive qualities of her sculptures. \nAbout the Artist🎨 \nChua Chon Hee (b. 1960\, Singapore) graduated from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts with an Advanced Diploma in Western Art in 1982. She is a fine arts educator and a multidisciplinary artist\, and works extensively with printmaking\, ink\, seal-carving\, and ceramic work. Her artistic expressions are formally inspired by the organic and quiet dynamism of nature\, and spiritually rooted in the Buddhist philosophy of ‘The Four Kalpas’ (成住坏空): the cycle of formation\, the cycle of continuance\, the cycle of decline\, and the cycle of disintegration.

SUMMARY:Children of the Star
DESCRIPTION:Featuring over 25 new works of prints\, ceramics\, and paintings by Chen Shitong and Nhawfal Juma’at\, the title Children of the Star is taken from the astronomer Carl Sagan’s popular science show in the 1980s. As he once said\, “The cosmos is within us. We are made of star-stuff. We are a way for the universe to know itself.” While we may not delve deep into how our bodies and those of our ancestors are formed by the spectacular death of the massive stars that were thousands of lightyears distant\, we are looking into his poetic ways of deploying memories\, weaving us a tapestry that connects to the unreachable and mysterious universe. The story expands our imagination and liberates our sense of self from our repetitive and ordinary lives on earth. Over time\, the story grows and morphs into different forms of memories\, making all of us “children of the star”. The exhibition will commence with this poetic take on Sagan’s. \nSharing similar yet different life experiences\, the artists utilise their distinctive approaches to collect and deploy tangible and intangible emotions\, forms\, and colours to create their works. Each piece is a narrative that expands the audience’s imagination on nature\, religion\, everyday objects\, scale\, and the sense of self. The exhibition delves into the ever-morphing nature of memories and their interchangeable properties with stories. Through this presentation\, Shitong and Nhawfal invite the audience to embark on an intimate and transcendental journey to explore and scrutinise the personal and collective space of Storyland. \n— \n🔖 The show will officially open on Wednesday\, 16 August from 6pm – 8pm with artists in attendance. \n🔖Artist Dialogue will take place on Sunday\, 20 August from 4pm – 5pm. \nTo RSVP\, kindly email kenix@artcommune.com.sg to confirm your attendance.

SUMMARY:Zhang Fuming: Props and Poses
DESCRIPTION:AC43 Gallery is pleased to present Singapore printmaker Zhang Fuming’s latest exhibition\, Props and Poses. Through this new series of work\, Fuming delves into an observational criticism of the ‘fake it till you make it’ phenomenon and the middle-class obsessional pursuit with materials and ranks within society. Featuring 12 medium- and large-format mixed media woodcuts and 8 small drawings completed in the recent period of 2020-2022\, the showcase provides audience an insightful survey of Fuming’s endeavour beyond conventional modes and formats of printmaking. \nZhang Fuming (b. 1989\, Singapore) obtained his diploma in Fine Arts (Printmaking) from LASALLE College of the Arts in 2011. He specialises in woodcut and has over the years developed a body of work that harnesses the direct\, efficient means of black-white woodcut narratives to express critical social messages. His stark\, expressive use of blacks and whites takes after the technique of German printmaker\, Kathe Kollwitz\, who relies on bold\, economical usage of blacks and whites to dramatise scenes of vulnerability\, toil and destitution. \nVenturing beyond the conventional practice of carving lines\, ridges and reliefs to create an original composition in negative\, Fuming treats the woodblock with carving tools and paints as a painter would a canvas\, unveiling a monochrome relief composition on its surface through strategically chiselled shapes\, lines and textures. Rather than being prints off the woodcut\, each composition is presented as-is on the wood plank – at one with the artist’s material and carving process\, and organically characterised by rough edges\, imperfections\, grains and frays. The image on the wood plank\, though spartan\, emanates stillness with a tremble of movement. This is because the composition is completed through tension and contrast from the seemingly brutish determination of the artist to create the desired image against the woodgrain\, allowing the struggles of the artist’s knife to show through in detail.

His stark\, expressive use of blacks and whites takes after the technique of German printmaker\, Kathe Kollwitz\, who relies on bold\, economical usage of blacks and whites to dramatise scenes of vulnerability\, toil and destitution. \nProps and Poses lends an observational criticism to the ‘fake it till you make it’ phenomenon and the middle-class obsession with materialistic pursuits and social ranks. Fuming deliberately modelled his woodcut compositions after certain types of images and photographic arrangements that pervade social media trends. The compositions evoke a photo-studio shoot setting where objects are arranged with figures in a particular fashion to create a seemingly spontaneous and objectively positive image. Upon closer inspection\, however\, these figures and objects are simply incompatible and awkward. The objects may seem unnaturally placed to optimise frontal viewing\, neglecting functionality in the process and resulting in a warp of perspective and proportion. The subject matter becomes incredibly awkward and artificially decorative\, as opposed to an artist’s process of framing and composing an image. There exists an ironic subtlety in Fuming’s handling of the objects and their significance within the setting of his composition\, opening up for audience a contextual ambiguity to ruminate upon.

SUMMARY:Anthony Chua Say Hua the echoes and eclipses of traditions
DESCRIPTION:AC43 Gallery is pleased to present Singapore artist Anthony Chua Say Hua’s latest solo exhibition\, Anthony Chua Say Hua: The Echoes and Eclipses of Traditions. Featuring around 15 ink works completed in the period of 2015-2022\, the showcase provides audience a quick survey of Anthony Chua’s contemporary ink approach\, which experiments widely with effects of smudging\, rubbing and layering of ink\, as well as non-brush and collage techniques. The show officially opens on Friday\, 16 September 2022\, 6 – 8pm at AC43 Gallery\, with the artist in attendance. \nAnthony Chua is most known for his contemporary abstract ink renditions of local heritage shophouse scenes. His interpretations of these familiar landscapes and buildings\, such as Under the Banyan Tree and Boat Quay\, merge Chinese monochrome aesthetics and daxieyi (大写意; writing the idea) brush style with Western abstraction techniques in pure lines and shapes. \nLike the Nanyang art pioneers before him\, Anthony Chua holds sacrosanct the principle of learning from and drawing on traditions without being slavishly bound by them. Having worked with Chinese ink and rice paper for over two decades\, he constantly seeks to transcend beyond familiar techniques and conventions. His new mixed media collage\, In Search of Shangri-la\, presents an enormous euphonious network of association formed through disparate and painted paper fragments that include spliced rice paper\, newspaper\, calendar pages and even a money bill. Images are laid upon images\, just as his ink sits layered upon ink\, evoking a multi-layered continuum where time\, space and cultures collide. Amidst this Western collage approach\, his handling of materials and paints amplifies rather than diminishes the rich ink wash subtleties intrinsic to Chinese ink tradition\, revealing a work that successfully embodies an East-West fusion and the expressive potential woven from these tensions. Bold and stylised in conception\, his work invites viewers to meander through the echoes and eclipses of traditions. \n\n\n\nAnthony Chua Say Hua (b. Singapore\, 1966) is a multiple award-winning artist who has been practising full-time art since 1996. An alumnus of the Goldsmiths College\, University of London under the Chen Chong Swee Overseas Art Scholarship and former winner of the National Arts Council’s Young Artist Award (2001)\, Anthony Chua also won the Silver Award in the established artist category in the 33rd UOB Painting of the Year Competition in 2014. \nApart from experimenting with different compositional themes\, Anthony Chua is versatile in employing effects of smudging\, rubbing and layering of ink to expand on the interesting subtleties of ink wash on rice paper. The artist is also known for utilising different types of brushes and unconventional tools such as peacock feathers and squeeze bottles in his paintings.
