SUMMARY:Plan 75 x ArtsWok Collaborative Fundraiser Screening
DESCRIPTION:This December\, the award-winning Japanese film Plan 75 is back on the big screen for a limited run since its release in 2022. Hailed for its sensitivity and haunting premise\, the film provides a lens to examine the place of seniors in a rapidly ageing society. Plan 75 will be accompanied by the touching short film Float Free (2024)\, where a trio of senior women find joy and a new lease of life from learning to swim at Yishun Swimming Complex. Both films offer an incisive and moving portrait of ageing\, community\, and the value of human connection. This unique pairing is brought together by non-profit arts organisation ArtsWok Collaborative in partnership with indie cinema The Projector.  \n  \nPlan 75 \nDirected by Chie Hayakawa \nIn Japanese with English subtitles \nRated NC16 \n  \nSet in a parallel dystopian Japan\, Plan 75 explores the introduction of a radical nationwide programme for voluntary euthanasia to deal with a super-aged society and the larger psychological repercussions that come with it. The film is a contemplative response to loneliness\, human dignity\, and what it really means to live. \n  \nFloat Free  \nCo-created by Chia Yim Fong\, Koh Tong Cheng\, and Michelle Sim with Salty Xi Jie Ng \nIn Mandarin with English and Mandarin subtitles \nRated G \n  \nFloat Free follows three seniors who overcome their fear of water to learn swimming at an older age. In the process\, they discover a shared community\, the freedom water provides in old age\, and reflections on life and death. The short film was collaboratively scripted by senior collaborators and the lead artist of a recent project under ArtsWok Collaborative’s flagship programme Both Sides\, Now.  \n  \nMembers of the public will have a chance to catch Plan 75 and Float Free in the cinema on 7 and 15 December only at The Projector at Cineleisure. Tickets will be available from 15 November 2024. The Projector will be donating a portion of ticket sales from both screenings to ArtsWok Collaborative in support of the work they do in engaging and developing communities. SUMMARY:Lecture & Screening: Unearthing the "Blue Frontier": The International Seabed Authority's New Mining Code and the Costs of Deep-Sea Mining
DESCRIPTION:Over the past decade\, deep-sea minerals like polymetallic nodules containing copper and cobalt have gained attention as a potential resource for green energy technologies such as batteries\, computers\, and electric cars. Found mainly on the international seabed (as well as within territorial waters)\, these nodules are regulated by the International Seabed Authority (ISA)\, which will finalize a mining code in 2025 that determines future deep-sea exploration and exploitation. Following Singapore’s Deep-Sea Mining Act of 2015\, Ocean Mineral Singapore\, a subsidiary of Keppel Offshore and Marine conducted two deep-sea expeditions to the Pacific Ocean. While some argue this extraction is crucial for the green transition\, Pacific nations warn of its harmful impact on marine biodiversity and climate change. This lecture will explore the environmental and societal implications of deep-sea mining\, starting with a screening of the film Blue Peril\, 2022 (INTERPRT / Professor Nabil Ahmed\, Deep Sea Mining Campaign & Ozeanien-Dialog)\, a science-based visual investigation using architectural and spatial analysis to model the potentially irreversible effects of deep-sea mining in the Pacific Ocean. Paired with testimonies from Pacific Island communities\, this film addresses the impacts on their economies and ways of life. DESCRIPTION:“Riding bikes ain’t s#!+ without climate justice\, without land back\, without liberation of everybody.” Christina Torres\, Cyclista Zine \nThe bicycle is more than just a means of transportation. In our increasingly car-centric and carbon-heavy lifestyle\, cycling is a climate action that slows down the rate at which our planet is burning. Inspiring stories from Gaza have shown us how bicycles can be radically repurposed into washing machines\, sewing machines\, and even power generators. \nIn the first part of the workshop\, participants will be offered a set of unused bicycle components and they will be guided to devise and conceptualise new musical or sonic instruments with them. In the second part\, these unorthodox instruments will be played in a group jam session! \nParticipants are encouraged to bring personal items such as mallets\, drumsticks\, clarinet mouthpieces\, and/or any musical bobs and bits they can incorporate into the instruments. \nThis workshop is part of the Empirical Workshop Series of Communities of Practice. DESCRIPTION:Step into the shade of the Albizia tree (Albizia moluccana)\, a resilient migrant tree species that has quietly spread and flourished in rewilding green spaces across Singapore’s landscape\, forming isolated islands amid Singapore’s urban concrete jungle. 5 Albizias\, a travelling showcase by artist Robert Zhao Renhui\, explores the history of the Albizia tree in Singapore\, tracing its origins to the Maluku Islands in Indonesia\, where the fast-growing species often populates areas marked by human intervention and natural disturbances.  \nThrough striking visuals of five Albizias—four from across Singapore in Tampines\, Punggol\, Jurong\, and Woodlands\, corresponding to the showcase venues—and one from the Maluku Islands\, 5 Albizias invites visitors to examine the impact human actions have on these spaces and the dynamic interplay between native and non-native\, natural and artificial. By spotlighting the resilience of these often-overlooked trees\, the exhibition brings to the fore their essential role in rewilding disturbed land\, creating pockets of green where life can thrive anew. \nPresented by Singapore Art Museum\, 5 Albizias takes Zhao’s explorations of the Albizia tree into the heartlands. SUMMARY:Natural Radio Workshop led by artist Ong Kian Peng
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will introduce participants to natural radio. Natural radio is the emission of Very Low Frequency (VLF) and Extremely Low Frequency (ELF) radio waves due to electromagnetic energy from natural phenomena. These emissions originate terrestrially from lightning and from the Sun’s interactions with the Earth’s magnetosphere\, they are among the inaudible voices of the environment. If the low frequencies of these electromagnetic outbursts are transformed into acoustic waves\, many of these signals may fall within the range of human hearing. Experiencing electromagnetic waves as acoustic waves will allow listeners to connect with the beauty and complexity of natural radio waves in a unique aural experience. \nBy the end of the workshop\, participants will be able to assemble an analogue handheld radio device that tunes in to natural radio frequencies. \nParticipants are encouraged to bring their own headphones with a 3.5mm audio jack\, along with an optional audio recorder to capture and share their auditory discoveries. \nThis workshop is part of the Empirical Workshop Series of Communities of Practice. The first showcase offered an intimate glimpse into Koh’s collection—emphasising monochromatic\, abstract\, and landscape works that reflected quiet introspection. Now\, Of Dreams and Contemplation: I am All but a Story continues to unfold a collection rich in personal meaning—presenting works that trace Koh’s decades-long interactions with art and the artists he admires. \n  \nCollected with a focus on memory and emotion\, Koh’s private collection spans Southeast Asia and beyond\, blending local\, regional\, and global perspectives. This exhibition deepens the dialogue between art and life\, revealing Koh’s ongoing exploration of what he calls a “visual diary”—works that evoke deeply personal moments and emotions. DESCRIPTION:‘Bleached Bones’ is a visual catalogue of photographic prints by artist and photographer Ernest Goh. In this exhibition curated by Shireen Marican\, bleached corals capture timeless\, poignant last words of the departed. \nBleaching is a phenomenon when corals turn completely white after algae in their tissues are expelled when their waters are too warm — nature’s lasting reminder that climatic changes continue to influence ecological systems. \nErnest’s explorations across the shores of Nikoi Island in Indonesia led to a discovery of the unique formations of these bleached corals. In these\, he finds a visual parallel to the alphabet system which he draws upon to contemplate lessons of life and living from death poems and last words. \nThis exhibition is presented by Blueprint Art Advisory. DESCRIPTION:The symbols of the divine show up in our world initially at the trash stratum.\n– Philip K Dick \nShanghART Singapore is pleased to present The Divine in the Trash Stratum\, a solo exhibition by Robert Zhao Renhui featuring his latest photographic works. The exhibition highlights the profound transformations that emerge from layers of waste and decay\, as the artist invites us to reimagine the relationship between humanity and nature. \nA series of photographs of various creatures on a fallen Albizia tree trunk welcome visitors into the space. These strange scenes depict how a site of destruction has transformed into one of regeneration and life. Mysterious images of precious gems are in fact created with remnants of human activity such as glass shards and discarded fragments\, manifesting them as symbols of how forest processes and human histories intertwine. \nOpening 11 January 2025 ahead of Singapore Art Week\, the exhibition coincides with the Singapore Art Museum’s presentation of Seeing Forest\, first shown at the Singapore Pavilion at the Venice Biennale\, extending Zhao’s ongoing explorations of ecological resilience.

Highlights from these offerings will be available for public viewing in a preview exhibition from 14 January 2025 to before the live auction on 18 January 2025 at 5 Jiak Kim Street. \n  \nUnder the curatorial theme of ‘Landscapes: as far as the heart can see’\, a section of the exhibition and auction explores the subject of landscape through different lenses across cultures\, time\, geography\, history\, and stylistic movements. Leading the sale will be Marc Chagall’s La danse autour de la corbeille\, created in the artist’s last decade. Painted on the day of his wedding anniversary\, the work serves as an ode to love dedicated to his second wife and muse\, Vava\, who originally owned the work. Two rare\, fresh-to-market paintings by Raden Saleh\, the 19th-century nationalist artist of Indonesia and one of the most important artists in the region\, will also be presented to the public for the first time at Sotheby’s Singapore after having resided in a significant European private collection for the past century.  \nCollectors and art enthusiasts can also look forward to works by internationally acclaimed artists\, including Christine Ay Tjoe\, Fernando Zóbel\, Le Pho\, and Cheong Soo Pieng\, as well as ultra-contemporary artists Lucas Arruda\, Daisy Dodd-Noble\, and Camilla Engström\, in their auction debut in Singapore. \n  \nThe return of Sotheby’s Singapore Modern and Contemporary Art auction follows an exciting few weeks for the art world\, including solid results at Sotheby’s major auctions in Hong Kong\, London\, Paris\, and New York. As part of her residency project\, she conducted walking workshops in Phnom Penh\, Bangkok and Berlin. This project idea draws on her ongoing research on our relationship with urbanity in rapidly developing cities. \nZen (visual art) and SueKi (dance) as collaborators\, are now interested in moving forward with research into Singapore’s urban context\, delving deeper into how they can explore the discourses on light and urbanity through multidisciplinary means: soundscapes\, multimedia data translation\, movement\, and tactile forms. This provides multiple entry points into the research as well as the interpretation\, creation\, and presentation of the data. Through artistic means\, they are interested in opening up a space where people can take time to process and discuss their embodied perspectives on light and darkness\, and how these ever co-existing elements are inextricably linked to life rhythms\, memories\, pollution\, urban development\, safety and surveillance\, environmental changes\, accessibility of energy\, and volatile global political states. \n— \nAbout Zen Teh\nZen Teh (b.1988\, Singapore) is an artist and educator interested in man’s relationship with the natural world. Her art practice spans photography\, sculpture and installation art. Teh has initiated collaborative interdisciplinary projects with artists\, art professionals and scientists to explore the impact of human activity on natural environments. Teh’s works have been showcased in Singapore and regionally including Thailand\, Cambodia\, Indonesia\, Korea\, Japan\, Taiwan and China. She was conferred the Young Artist Award by The National Arts Council\, Singapore in 2021. She was artist-in-residence at the International Studio Programme at Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin\, Germany in 2024. \nAbout SueKi Yee\nSueKi Yee is a Malaysian dancer-choreographer (currently based in Berlin) who’s drawn to improvisation\, site-specific work\, and multidisciplinary experimentation and collaboration. With a Bachelor in Dance (ASWARA)\, she’s trained in contemporary dance\, ballet\, and various traditional folk and classical dances. Movement has become her entry point into understanding and exploring other art forms\, providing diverse entry points into her work and expanding the horizons of research\, creation\, and presentation.

Transforming Objectifs’ Chapel Gallery into a shared\, psychological artists’ studio\, the exhibition synthesises four propositions on care by artists Hu Rui\, Genevieve Leong\, Huijun Lu\, and Arabelle Zhuang. The informal gatherings aim to broaden and deepen the discourse\, probing the values encoded in our words and actions. Featuring programmes such as a dialogue with artist Ezzam Rahman and open studios\, these gatherings create a space to imagine how we might journey together sustainably\, thriving within—and beyond—Singapore’s pursuit of excellence. \n— \nAbout the Curator\nLenette Lua is a practice-led researcher and curator whose interests delve into reconciling the contested intersections of political\, economic\, and socio-cultural spheres through her curatorial work. While at the Royal College of Art in London\, she initiated the long-term curatorial project ‘Fungi Initiative\,’ exploring institutional collaborations via participatory artist-led workshops. She was the recipient of the Objectifs Curator Open Call 2024 Award. \nAbout the Artists \nArabelle Zhuang is an interdisciplinary artist working across photography\, moving images and textiles. In her practice\, Zhuang examines the interpersonal relationship\, beauty in the peripheral and the cyclical nature of being. She is interested in developing narratives that search for the multiplicities of everyday life and the layers in between. \nEzzam Rahman is a multi-disciplinary artist known for his interest in the body and the use of common\, easily accessible\, yet unconventional media in his art practice. Working across sculpture\, installation\, digital media\, and performance\, he creates works that are often autobiographical\, time-based\, and ephemeral\, aiming to pique viewers’ thoughts on the themes of body politics\, identity\, impermanence\, traces\, and abjection. He was awarded a joint winner of the Grand Prize for the President’s Young Talents 2015 and the People’s Choice Award by the Singapore Art Museum. Ezzam won the Most Promising Award for photography at the PULSE Awards 2021. He served as artistic director for The Substation in 2021 and was involved in various prestigious programmes\, including the NIE Visiting Artist Programme and NAC Our SG Arts Plan launch event. \nGenevieve Leong‘s art practice attempts to visualise the intangible. Beginning with the immaterial\, her work often combines text\, image\, found and made objects and the manipulation of space to create what she describes as “an almost physical image”. The installations that she creates often embody an impermanence with possibilities for change\, whether it be due to audience participation or natural environmental factors. Her work seeks to shed new light onto her emotions\, sensations\, and realisations. \nHu Rui works with videos\, installations\, and computer simulation. His practice engages with issues around temporality from a multitude of variables\, including causality\, prediction\, choice\, and language. He is the recipient of the Best Experimental Animation Award at the 60th Ann Arbor Film Festival and a Jury Special Mention at the 25FPS Festival Croatia. He is Assistant Professor in Computation and Design at Duke Kunshan University. \nHuijun Lu works at the intersections of art\, music\, engineering and computing. Lu’s practice culminates in kinetic installations\, sculptures\, moving images and soundscapes. Consistent in the works are mechanisms and circuits that examine the function of objects\, observations about the unnoticed in our environments\, and technology’s role in mediating relationships with our surroundings. \nAbout the designer \nVanessa Ban is a designer and educator with over a decade of experience working with cultural institutions and commercial clients. She is the founder of External Assessment Summer School\, an interdisciplinary educational initiative that bridges art\, critical theory\, and design. Vanessa has served on jury panels including D&AD and The Crowbar Awards. As an adjunct faculty\, she incorporates her professional expertise and critical design approach honed through experiences at Pentagram\, Typography Summer School New York\, and the London College of Communication.

With him are his father’s ashes. As he makes the arduous trip\, he retraces the original journey made by millions of people—including his parents and grandparents—in 1947\, during the partition of India and Pakistan. \nWritten by Cultural Medallion recipient Haresh Sharma\, Eclipse is a play that looks at three generations of men struggling with their dreams and their journeys\, offering an intimate look at personal stories affected by historical events. \nFirst presented as a short play to critical acclaim by Scotland’s 7:84 Theatre at Traverse Theatre\, Eclipse was developed into a full-length production for the M1 Singapore Fringe Festival 2008. \nAlmost 80 years after the Partition\, this staging with a fresh new direction by Associate Artist A Yagnya stars award-winning Singapore actor Shrey Bhargava.
